Answer:
Some gasoline stations in my area (Louisville, Kentucky) have a kerosene pump separate and apart from the gasoline/diesel pump islands. Kerosene costs a bit more some time but stinks less at startup and keeps your heater's spray nozzle cleaner longer.

I'm not sure about other states, but here in Michigan you can find it all over the place right at gas stations. They have a separate pump and you fill your own container. The price fluctuates like gas. Kerosene containers are blue and are available where gasoline containers are sold. Not every gas station has it, but you could phone the ones in your area and ask., From January 2015 through May 2015 I Read More

The answer is yes, you can use a separate external thermostat with the 50,000 btu mode. Most manufacturers start their lineup with a model that puts out around 50,000 btu and they don't incorporate a thermostat in that size heater. Like, you, I utilize a separate external thermostat. We can place the thermostat far away from the heater and that gives much better temperature control than having the thermostat built in to the heater ( I think). Read Less

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Leaks when full This product fired up and worked just great when I only put about 2.5 gallons in. On the second refill I put in the full 5 gallons. After sitting and not being used for a week or more it is weeping kerosene, I believe around the pinch weld seam. Returning to home depot. Trying to decide if I want to order another or not. disappointed but I guess these things happen. I highly recommend completely filling this for your first run to make sure there are no leaks to avoid disappointment later. Home depot does have a good price on this unit so i'll still recommend just check for leaks March 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best tool for winter The heater is very good economic size is perfect makes some noise but it is defenitely good if i recommend it because in the winter it is a good tool. March 15, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by works great quiet operation better quality steel than some other brands. I had 2 minor problems when received found one of the ignition wires unplugged inside and the pressure was to high other than that for setup was fine. one thing to note when the machine starts it usually starts with a small puff of smoke before it ignites and keeps running works well in garage have thermostat hardwired at opposite side of garage had tried a different brand 75000 btu that had an annoying clicking sound that this one doesn't. This machine when running it is smooth and steady sound. February 10, 2016
