42 inches refers to the firebox width. The enitre unit is just over 47 inches wide.

I have looked in the manual and did not see if this can be vented or not.

Hello and thank you for your question. This unit is specifically vent free. It does not have a flue/chimney opening and is not designed for such. You would need a "direct vent" unit for venting. The difference....Vent free units are designed for use with vent free gas logs only. You cannot burn real wood or "vented" gas logs. Vented means it has a flue or a place for carbon monoxide to escape.
