Hi - Thank you for your previous answer regarding resin stability in this product.
My question was mainly if the plastic compounds in the resin could possibly leach into food.

In the "Easy Pickers" product you mentioned (thanks) the description contains the following information:
"The resin used in this product is a food safe High Density Polyethylene. It is chemically inactive, BPA free and Phthalate free and is perfectly safe for growing edible garden vegetables. The resin also includes chemically inert UV additives to prevent long term degradation from direct sunlight."

How about this product? Many thanks.

Answer:
Good Morning! Thanks for the interest in our products. As for your question regarding the resin used in the Rail Planters, they are constructed of the same resin as the easy pickers and are therefore, just as safe for food usage as the easy pickers. Once again, thanks for the interest and enjoy the remainder of your summer.

Is the resin used in this planter stable enough to use to plant herbs and vegetables? I noticed that only flowers are shown in the product pictures.

Answer:
Excellent question, thank you. This planter is mainly designed for use with flowers. However, I do believe it would also make an ideal herb garden planter. Seeing as how most herbs are not that bulky or heavy, I believe this is more than enough to support an herb garden. The vegetables are another question, though. I would like to direct you towards the Easy Pickers and City Pickers line that Read More

Answer:
The planting box can be left out but if there is any water remaining in the planter after the summer and you experience a very cold winter it could crack the planter. If you want to be safe we would recommend bringing it indoors during the winter months. Thank you for your question and good luck.

Thank you for your question. These planters will fit over rails 1" - 6" in width. They also come with fasteners that will help in stabilizing them once they are planted. As always, thanks for your interest.

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.8 out of 5 by 97 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect Planters for my Front Porch, Beautiful Display I bought two of these planters for my front porch. The rails measure only 3 inches in width. After reading other reviews, I just added some thin semi-rigid foam to fill in a small gap in the space where the planter fits onto the rail, and used the stabilizing legs against the balusters. Very nice design. These are very attractive and stable. I am very happy and plan to enjoy them for many years. June 8, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Bad Advertising I purchased these over-the-rail planters on-line. The advertisement said they would fit a 6-inch deck railing, but the opening was only 4 inches. I ended up returning them. Someone at Home Depot should check the measurements before allowing something to be sold incorrectly. July 13, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Not what I hoped for They appear cumbersome, too large on top of my railing. I am using them as regular planters on the floor of the deck instead. June 28, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Suits my needs Decent sized planter, easy to install. A little annoying because it doesn't sit flush on the railing, had a slight rocking length-wise.. May 17, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Mesure your railing first Might be good but the opening is not 6 inches. Only a railing of 4 inches or less will work. Because ours is 5 inches, the product was returned with disappointment. May 10, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Too large I know that this review seems odd but the planters I ordered were well made but too large for the area I wanted to put them on. Would recommend them to people with large decks. May 10, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by just right Deep enough for my plants, love the little adjusters to hold this planter in place. just right January 5, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Exactly what I needed Our fence is pretty thin (1.5") so I was having a tough time finding large planters that would fit the narrow rail. We also needed something that wasn't permanent since we're in a rental. These planters were the perfect solution. A little wobbly at first, but the included stabilizers have kept the planters secure and level even after heavy waterings. I spray painted ours a different color and drilled more drainage holes. Adding a chicken wire bonnet gave the morning glories and moonflowers something time climb on. We've been pleased with our purchase and really have enjoyed the extra garden space it gave our boring concrete patio! June 7, 2016
