Answer:
It'd have to be a small padlock as hole diameter is small (<1/2").

Answer:
Yes, but the hole is small. A standard Master lock is about all that will fit. Look below the latch bar in the picture to see the hole in the catch.

If this latch goes on the outside of the gate, how do you open it from the inside, to get out of your backyard? Shouldn't there be a way out as well?

Drill a hole and use a wire pull that is available just for this purpose.

Answer:
This latch is generally used to close the gate from the inside and can be secured using a padlock. There are products available that would allow you to open the gate from the opposite side, if you choose.

Rated 3.4 out of 5 by 5 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Poorly made screws While installing, two screw heads broke off. Do not recommend this product. June 12, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Gate latch This winter, the ground froze and the gate rose about 3/4". Our old gate latch had to be moved until I found this self-adjusting one. This one adjustss well, but doesn't latch if the gate is slammed(by kids). Using a thin rope for opening the pull from the inside of the gate. I am thinking it may be too heavy and the weight of the catch is not enough. Wish there was a spring to hold the latch closed. I will have to get something in place, dogs got out twice already. Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Self-Adjusting feature makes it unsecure Quality made, but the self-adjusting feature enables it to pop open with a little jiggling of the gate. My dog figured out how to open the gate in about 30 seconds. I either need to get a more secure latch or a dumber dog. May 24, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good Deal! Good quality for the price. Easy to assemble and attach to gate. October 29, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Product worked as advertised I put on storage bulding doors and it works great. January 17, 2012
