Hi Polly- This is Sue at GE Appliances. Thanks for viewing our Electric Ranges! Porcelain Coated Cast Iron cookware is okay as long as the cookware is covered completely with porcelain enamel. Cast Iron cookware is not recommended. If the cookware has a burr or rough spot, it will scratch the glass surface. Additionally, it is slow to absorb heat. Once this type of cookware heats up, especially on high heat, it holds an intense amount of heat which is transferred to the cooktop. This can cause the element to shut down as a response to the temperature limiters which indicate surface temperature is too high for cooktop components to handle. Stainless Steel is highly recommended. A sandwich clad bottom is especially good because it combines the durability and stability of stainless steel with the heat conduction and distribution of aluminum or copper. Heavy-Weight Aluminum cookware is also recommended. It conducts heat faster than other metals and cooks evenly. Flat Bottom pans are essential for good cooking performance since the bottom of the pan needs to touch the glass for the best heat transfer. Thanks for checking with us! Read Less

Answer:
Hello Bob, This is Joyce from GE Appliances. I am sorry to hear this happened. In some rare instances the element, within the surface unit, will "short-out" against the sheath which is the outer visible part of the surface unit. This will cause the sheath to rupture and sparks may occur for a few seconds. I recommend taking advantage of your warranty and contacting GE Consumer Service at 1-800-432-2737. Read More

Hi freddy-this is Sue from GE Appliances. We are excited to hear of your interest in our electric ranges! The Bake mode uses heat primarily from the lower element but also from the upper element to provide even heat and great baking results. The Broil Hi/Lo mode uses heat from the upper element. Thanks for checking with us. Enjoy!

5.3 cu. ft. Electric Range with Self-Cleaning Oven in White is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 116.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Wonderful!! This stove is literally AWESOME! Heating up the oven doesn't heat up the HOUSE. The door gasket seals perfectly, letting out absolutely NO HEAT while baking. Oven pre-heat time from cold to 350 degrees? Only takes 2.5 minutes The range-top burners heat up fast and water for spaghetti, that once took 10+ minutes... now it takes only THREE. The Power-Boil circle literally needs to be renamed "READY NOW". This Electric Range has reduced our cooking time by more than HALF. We are still amazed at how well this range works. It is literally Awe Inspiring! P.S. it even comes with a bottle of cleaner and a cleaning pad for the flat-top cooking area.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from GE Range Brand new and already needed a service call. The hot light is constantly on due a short in one if the burners. GE customer service screwed up my first appointment and no one showed up so that was one wasted day off of work. Second time around the service person shows up and has to order a part so still waiting for a third appointment after 2 weeks. Brand new and highly annoyed with GE's service. All they can offer me are filters for a refigerator. How does that make any sense? Try to buy American and it is 3 service calls during a weekday and lousy customer service! Wish I didn't buy 4 products from them.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love the new range, but with exceptions! So glad to have the oven features with no exposed coils at the base! However, when I cleaned the oven for the first time a couple of days ago, the unit gave off an obnoxious smell...so strong that it burned my eyes for the time the cleaning function was engaged. The smell permeated the whole house!!!! This was NOT acceptable!!! Previously, I also tried the "steam clean" function and this was not up to my expectations either...just left a puddle of water in the bottom of the oven even after I followed the directions to use only one cup of water. Guess my hopes were that all the water would evaporate with this cleaning function and make the few small spills at the back of the oven easy to wipe off. Instead, the result was a water mark at the bottom of the oven that I cannot get off!!!! The small food spills were not easy to remove either. Other than that, I love the rapid boil feature and the two broiler settings.....works great! The warming feature is a nice extra! Only other comment is that the delivery team slammed the range into the cabinet opening, resulting in a scratch down to the metal on the back, left side. I have since touched the mark up with matching paint! In response to a follow up telephone call the next day, I found out that a bracket should have been attached at the wall. The delivery team did not do this and since I was not aware until after the fact it should have been done, could not have them take care of this safety feature. Hope other consumers find this information useful!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great stove with 5 burners Love this new stove. Has 5th burner for keeping something warm while you finish your other dishes.
Date published: 2015-03-25
Rated 4 out of 5 by from New to smooth top stoves This is my first smooth top stove. I love the fifth burner to keep items warm. The power boil is great when trying to bring something to a boil that contains a large amount of liquid like boiling a pot of potatoes, etc. The top is easier to keep clean than what I had anticipated from reading. The oven seems ok. I did however cook a pie on a sheet pan in the middle of oven and noticed that one side cooked more than the other. I cooked a 24 pan of muffins and they cooked evenly. Temp seems to be spot on for my recipes so far. Storage drawer is roomy compared to my older one. No broiler pan comes with the stove, but we all should own at least one if not more of those things since they came with every oven/stove we ever purchased previous. I don't use them anyway.... Over all, I am very satisfied with my purchase.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Totally dissapointed I had competitors range for close to 3 years. Due to a stupid move, our stove needed to be replaced. Not thinking it made a difference i bought this one, within 3 months the cook top looked worse than the one I had for almost 3 years. I'm not a clean freak but am very aware and good about cleaning the top of the stove. Currently have pits in the burner ring like bubbles had popped after the glass hardened. Air bubble looking spots in other places. So very very dissapointed that my stove top always looks dirty no matter how often I clean it. Funny the first thing I cooked on the competitors stove was home made jam that boiled over. That cleaned up nice, took some time but looked like new till well lets just say.... Ill never let my husband forget his crazy move..... Not sure ill ever buy another GE. Oh and stove light still doesn't work right!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not as good as our last one We bought this stove to replace our 19 year old GE (Basic) which I loved and it was very efficient The new one works well and all but I am disappointed in a few things. The seams do not come together and there are gaps in several places.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product Replacing worn out model with the new model. Product almost identical. Love the new one, it has just the right amount of knobs and controls. Would suggest the broiling pan come with the stove instead of having to purchase it seperate.
