Customer Questions & Answers

why the poor reviews?

the profile 21.7 cubic ft. draws poor reviews. are they valid? one writes: two circuit boards when no other fridge have them. another writes: closing the fridge door causes air pressure to pop open the freezer door. another writes: constant ice build up in freezer and loud fan noise. these are terrible complaints for such an expensive appliance. any answers? and what is the advantage of the profile over the 21.7 GE same dimensions but cheaper by $600, not yet rated, and not the Profile series?

Hello Sid, Thank you for your interest in in the GE Profile 21.7 cu. ft. Top Freezer Refrigerator model # PTS22SHSSS. This has been a popular refrigerator. Please be assured that GE has established high standards in appliance quality. Any conusmer can choose to post a review or not. Please rest assured there is not a recall. 1 or 2 reviews can be isolated because there are also positive reviews too. Profile model are the top of the line models. It is not unusual on a two-door refrigerator for one door to pop open when the other door is being closed. The refrigerator and freezer sections are connected by air channels to allow air to pass between them. Slamming a door shut forces air from one cavity into the other, often pushing the second door open. Proper leveling is important for the door to close properly. The front of the refrigerator should be slightly higher than the back, to allow the door to close normally. When properly adjusted, the door will close smoothly and firmly on its own. Check to see whether the refrigerator door gasket is sealing properly. If not, wash the entire gasket with baking soda and water (1 part baking soda to 3 parts water), especially on the hinge side. Then lubricate the hinge side of the gasket with paraffin wax (not candle wax). All refrigerator door gaskets are designed to rub the face of the refrigerator as they close. Keeping the gaskets clean and lubricated prevents them from dragging and restricting door closure. Place heavier items in the freezer door compartments to provide some ballast, since this is the smaller door and is more likely to pop open. Make sure there is nothing in the freezer or refrigerator that is preventing a door from closing tightly. I hope this helps. Donna with GE

Customer Reviews

Profile 21.7 cu. ft. Top Freezer Refrigerator in Black is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 25.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Basic Fridge, Great Performance I have this fridge in my apartment, and while it was the cheapest, and most basic, I think it's an excellent fridge. There is so much space in the fridge and freezer. I've had refrigerators before that have ice machines in them and there is absolutely no freezer space! I love all of the shelves and their ability to be moved around and shifted to accommodate more. The quality of the fridge and freezer is also great. Nothing ever gets frozen in the refrigerator (which I've also had happen) and everything stays frozen while in the freezer (have also had my things slightly melted yet still frozen before.) Overall, this basic fridge performs cold little miracles! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Freezer does not work well This is my secondary fridge, which I keep in the basement. The freezer has never worked very well, and I shut it when I lost power for 8 days with Hurricane Sandy. Last week I turned it back on, and @ days ago put fresh meat in the freezer. As of today, it is still not thoroughly frozen. I called a repairman to check it out; this fridge is only 2 years old. Very disappointed. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad design, don't buy it. The refrigerator is supposed to be designed to be energy efficient. However, because no air can escape out of it, when you close the refrigerator, the air goes through the vent up to the freezer and pushes the freezer door open. The freezer door often does not close all the way and frost builds up on evertything. The fan makes a loud noice, because the ice builds up. I have to defrost the freezer to get all the ice to melt. GE came three times, can't do anything about it. They act like mine is the only one that does it. It's tilted back, nothing helps. I have to keep tape on the freezer to keep it closed. I hate it. Don't buy it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not very reliable, but I'm about to buy another one I had this unit for about 8 years, and included it when I sold my house. It's not perfect, but I'm about to buy the exact same unit when I close on a new house next month. Cons: We had to have it serviced twice, both times due to faulty electronics. Pros: Nice features - I particularly like the ability to adjust the actual temperature of both refrigerator and freezer. Also, it is excellent at maintaining a constant temperature (as long as you leave room for air circulation). You can really notice that food lasts longer in this refrigerator. When you consider the cost of food, this unit pays for itself.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good decision I purchased this refrigerator in February. I had 2 door side by side for many years, but decided that the freezer space in this one would lend itself to larger objects better. Actually I like the wider areas in the refrigerator and freezer. Everything seems to be working fine. One small glitz is that the cheese drawer is a little difficult to open. I haven't asked for advice yet. I purchased GE because of the past performance and service in the many years past that I have had with them. They are so much better than most companies that I have dealt with before.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Bad Drawer Bad drawer- rear half cannot be accessed unless the drawer is lifted past the stopper tabs, at which point the drawer falls out-- before the end of the drawer, as the side rails do not go the full length of the drawer. Also, the store prominently posted the "Made in America" card, and another was in each of the floor models (personally thanking for purchasing a Made in America product), but when my refrigerator arrived it clearly said MADE IN MEXICO.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from within 7 years performance down warranty issue within 7 years performance down not providing enough pressure to make the cools in top & bottom portion. Canada has 10 years warranty but the USA has 5 years on compressure. Unfair warranty.
