How long are these replacement filters supposed to last? That is a very subjective question. It would depend on use. In our case we have three adults and our first filter only lasted 4 months. I was supprised it only lasted that long for us under what I consider fairly light use. The fiter replacement light comes on wlth our model when time to change the filter.

Hello Chiefsfan313 - this is Nancy at GE and I am happy to help you.
When there is no filter replacement indicator light, we recommend a filter change every six months, or if the flow of water to the water dispenser or icemaker decreases, whichever comes first.
I hope this helps! Thanks for checking with us!

Answer:
Yes it can. You remove the old filter and insert the bypass cap that came with your refridgerator. The owners manual for the refridgerator should specify how to do this.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by GE Water Filter Easy to install and quality construction and features. July 5, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Water is now worse than with original filter Called GE due to a potential defect in this brand new filter I bought. Have had the filter in for a week and there is still a metallic aftertaste. GE said they won't do anything about it because it was bought from Home Depot June 20, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect for our needs and expectations! We recently moved to a new home with a GE Refrigerator. We were pleasantly surprised at how easy and accessible it was to replace the water filter. We were originally skeptical that a single water filter could provide the effectiveness that we required in previously having a full Reverse Osmosis System at our prior home. Our skepticism is long gone....the filtered water tastes great and is safe for both us and our 4 legged companions. January 8, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great Unit. Too expensive. This takes out the chlorine taste (and who knows what else!). I've used these for years. Make sure you run a couple of gallons before drinking to remove any taste or loose carbon parts. Easy to install. June 26, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Horrible product I purchased this water filter and when I install it, my refrigerator makes a loud sound and the water slowly trickles out of the dispenser. The cost of the filter is too much for it not to work. I will be returning it today. Hopefully, I can get a replacement that actually works. June 8, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Makes adifference Like this product....when needs replacing water flow is lowered so you know it's time! June 28, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works for me It does the job. I have used them for years and no complaint. June 1, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good Water Filter The water filter works great -- exactly as it should. The prior filter we purchased for the same refrigerator caused the water to run very slow, but the problem appears to be addressed with the current filters. May 31, 2016
