Customer Questions & Answers

how come it is $29.98 at my local Home Depot?

Asked by: Rick
There are 3 similar sized models. The cheapest is the FSXTC that mostly just removes chlorine and has red ends. The middle one is the FXULC with yellow ends that removes heavy metals (lead, mercury, etc.) as well as chlorine. The top model is the FXUVC with green ends that removes serious organic contaminants as well as heavy metals and chlorine. It is priced highest, and is probably the one you noticed the price of at your local store, not the middle priced one discussed here. All of them remove particulates (rust, grit, etc.). In fact they all seem to be rated as filtering in the range of half to one micron which would remove really fine particles and do a fair job on some parasites that are sometimes found in drinking water (like cryptosporidium). If your tap water is known to be of high quality and you just want get rid of the chlorine taste, the cheapest will do. If there is a possibility of heavy metals the middle one is choice. If there is a possibility your water may be contaminated with MTBE (a gasoline additive) or other harmful organic chemicals, you would need the most expensive. Even with the cheapest which has a 3,000 gallon capacity, it is a good idea to change the filter every six months. It is possible for bacteria to colonize water filters so it is better not to leave them in place longer than that. And even the most expensive one here, with a 400 gallon capacity, should provide service for that length of time if used only for drinking and cooking in a typical household. Of course, if the flow rate slows way down before that, it is time to change.

Hello, my fiance purchased a home 6 years ago, and we just noticed a GXWH2OF filter on the main water line, which we're certain hasn't been

changed in at least that time. What filter element should we use to replace the existing one?
Asked by: Anonymous
Look for "Whole house filtration system" on the shelves. They have carbon replacement filters there. Should be <$10 a piece. I use those in my house for 5 years already. (Replace every 3 month. Notice increased water flow every time I replace it).

It does filter out everything as advertised but it restricts water flow to a trickle. The other cheaper filters have good flow rates but do not remove heavy metals (lead) and other potentially harmful things. I rather be safe so I use this one despite the low flow rate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Have Used for Years Whenever I've asked skeptics to compare to tap and bottled water, this filter has won. WE use it for beverage water- res and coffee and drinking along with our refrigerator too. Change this filter about once a year.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I had problems getting water to flow out of the filter After installing the filter the water would barely flow out of the tap. After checking all the water lines for obstructions I discovered that I had plenty of flow WITHOUT the cartridge in the filter housing. Called the GE hotline & was told to soak the filter about an hour & then install it. Still had the same problem. I guessed that the hole on each end of the cartridge was too small to let the water flow so I enlarged the holes slightly which solved the problem.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from better tasting water Our water tastes like it came straight from a swimming pool. I've used this filter in a Culligan under-the-sink filter housing as well as a GE Whole House filter housing. The water comes out with no taste, which is exactly what I think water should taste like. I cringe at the price every time I buy a new one, but using a dedicated faucet and shut off valve for the filter it only needs to be replaced twice or maybe three times a year.
