There are 3 similar sized models. The cheapest is the FSXTC that mostly just removes chlorine and has red ends. The middle one is the FXULC with yellow ends that removes heavy metals (lead, mercury, etc.) as well as chlorine. The top model is the FXUVC with green ends that removes serious organic contaminants as well as heavy metals and chlorine. It is priced highest, and is probably the one you noticed the price of at your local store, not the middle priced one discussed here. All of them remove particulates (rust, grit, etc.). In fact they all seem to be rated as filtering in the range of half to one micron which would remove really fine particles and do a fair job on some parasites that are sometimes found in drinking water (like cryptosporidium). If your tap water is known to be of high quality and you just want get rid of the chlorine taste, the cheapest will do. If there is a possibility of heavy metals the middle one is choice. If there is a possibility your water may be contaminated with MTBE (a gasoline additive) or other harmful organic chemicals, you would need the most expensive. Even with the cheapest which has a 3,000 gallon capacity, it is a good idea to change the filter every six months. It is possible for bacteria to colonize water filters so it is better not to leave them in place longer than that. And even the most expensive one here, with a 400 gallon capacity, should provide service for that length of time if used only for drinking and cooking in a typical household. Of course, if the flow rate slows way down before that, it is time to change. Read Less

Thank you for your recent inquiry with The Home Depot, Rick. Store pricing sometimes differs from online pricing for various reasons. Store pricing is done regionally and they sometimes offer deeper discounts to make room for new inventory. We appreciate your business and look forward to serving you in the future. Thank you for shopping Home Depot.

Look for "Whole house filtration system" on the shelves. They have carbon replacement filters there.
Should be <$10 a piece. I use those in my house for 5 years already. (Replace every 3 month. Notice increased water flow every time I replace it).

Can I get a 1 Micron filter for this housing?
I want to pre filter with FXWTC as the first filter then, in line, a 1 micron filter for drinking in the 2nd housing.
I'd like to use the same housing with both filters. Will FXULC work in the GXWH04F housing?

There is not a Class I (0.5-1.0 microns) filter that will work in the GXWH04F.
The FXULC will not work in GXWH04F.
I hope this helps. Please let us know if you have any further questions. Read Less

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good alternative to RO filtering We like to filter out chlorine and other contaminants from our water, and this filter clears 97% as much as an RO system for 1/4 the price. Lasts about 5-6 months for our ( 2 person) usage. September 1, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Slow water flow. A month ago, I bought two FXULC replacement filters for my under sink filter system and external ice-cube maker filter system. When I replaced one of these filers, the water flow was extremely slow. I checked many things to find what I did wrong, even replaced the drinking water faucet.. Finally, I decided to test the unit without any filter. The water flow was great. So, I replaced the new filter with the 2nd (new) filter that I have purchased at the same time. Still low flow volume. Thinking that I had purchased two filters from a bad lot, I took them back to store and got two more new ones. Now the faucet had good water flow. I replaced the Ice-cube maker filter and it as well had good flow. So, I had two bad filters. November 1, 2014
