Yes, they are made for adding more forming length as well as height.

Is the wood treated with anything?

Just wondering if it is just cedar, or cedar with any stain, or other wood treatments applied.

what type of lining would you use for the inside of planter box being build

Asked by: doedoe
This Cedar is probably made mostly of 'sapwood', not 'heartwood'. Its life expectancy will be short when exposed to moisture and insects, EVEN though it is Cedar. For best extended life, use a 6 mil clear or black plastic (black is easier to see damage to it = holes, cuts, etc) on the inside between the wood and the dirt, and make it fold underneath the wood to minimize contact with damp dirt. The plastic that is covered by dirt will last for many, many years, but the portion exposed to sunlight will breakdown within a year or two. What I do to make it last longer, is to put a small strip of cedar, redwood, or pine (minimum of 3" high) along the inside top edge screwed onto the main boards. This sandwiches the plastic sheet between both boards and protects it from sunlight. The dirt must cover the bottom of this strip of wood to protect the sheeting from UV rays. This strip will be the only thing that will need to be replaced every so many years. This has worked for me for many years. Raised bed panels/boards that were not protected (redwood) rotted on the inside where sapwood existed at an alarming rate, but the later ones that I protected with plastic looked new on the inside when I replace the plastic, AFTER many years of service. I had to replace the plastic because the top was not protected from UV rays, HENCE, I now install a protective layer of wood or garden edging, using either stainless steel screws or HOT Dipped Galvanized ones. I am getting ready to make some large raised beds, and this is the economical method I will use on most, but on some, I will use the method described below. Another liner that is much more durable, but more expensive, which I have also used is PVC Pond Liners and I cut them into strips to cover the whole inside and underneath of the bottom boards. Still use the strip on the top to hold the liner tight, but I am not worried about the UV deterioration or accidental damage with the gardening tools, since this liner is much thicker and stronger. A lot of the pieces were warped and split when put together. We had to reinforce it with cedar fence panels. Also had to sand down each piece and seal it to make sure that it would last at least a year. I'm attaching a picture of the finish product, you can see where it is uneven.

I have had these raised beds 2 years , they rotted and had to be replaced. I thought this bed should have lasted more than two growing seasons, very disappointed. They were difficult to put together because the boards were not straight.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far so good! I just recieved my raised garden bed today. It was pretty easy to assemble, only took me about 15 minutes. There was only one board that was warped, otherwise it looks like a nice product. I can't wait to fill it up!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from It was great while it lasted We purchased several of these kits in Spring 2014 to assemble a raised bed vegetable garden. Assembly was easy and it looked great the first year (2014). It looked pretty ok in 2015, but now it's March 2016 and the entire thing is falling apart. The dovetail parts that inserts into the end posts have rotted away, so the sides are pulling out of the posts and spilling dirt all over my yard. We will have to tear down the entire garden and rebuild it using better materials. We had hoped that this product would last longer than 24 months, considering the cost. Now we will have to spent more time and money to replace it - very disappointing performance.

The Greenes Fence Dovetail Cedar Raised Garden Bed kits were easy to assemble. I'd like to emphasize the importance of leveling the ground upon which the bed will be erected before trying to put the kit together - important to do this so that the planks will dovetail into their channels. This seems to be a well made product and price is not too bad. This product totally met my expectations. Got two kits this Spring; have put them together; plan to add organic garden soil to the beds this weekend. Can't wait to start planting!

It arrived with 3 extra cedar boards and at first I didn't know what I was supposed to do with them. Then after setting this up, about 2 days later, I noticed several of the boards were excessively bowed. So I put in the 'extra' 3 boards. Then a couple days later 2 of these were bowed out. I took these and just reversed them to bow in hoping the dirt would push them back out. When I put the dirt in and started to work the soil the joint in the middle of the sides started moving out so it looked like I had a hexagon. Had to go to the Ace hardware store and pick up a few 2 foot 1/2 inch re-bar and pound in the ground to hold the sides in place. Would I buy another one of these? NO.
