Some are galvanized. Some are plastic coated. some are smooth steel. What are the applications of these nails. What if something is outside exposed to the weather?

Answer:
Are you building something based on a set of plans drawn by a licensed designer? If so check the plans and find what is specified. If inspections are required and you use the wrong size nail you may be required to redo the work or have the designer submit calculations justifying the use.

Answer:
Galvanized can be used in pressure treated materials. Galvanized can be utilized in applications where they are exposed to the weather and you want to avoid the possibility of rust.
Plastic coated nails drive easier than other nails. They will rust. Steel is the basic nail and if exposed to moisture they will also rust.

Answer:
It is also important that any fasteners being used with pressure treated lumber be HDG. (hot dipped galvanized). The chemicals used in P. Treatment will eat regular nails!

Answer:
Hi Billy,
Galvanized are for exterior work, making the nail rust proof.
The vinyl coating increasing the nails holding power, preventing it from backing out as easily as a uncoated nail.
Smooth steel does not have serrations, the serrations also help prevent the nail from backing out of the wood.
In the case of this nail the vinyl coating replaces the serrations.

Answer:
If you are using these nails for construction where a permit is required they might not be acceptable for use in different types of pressure treated lumber. The chemicals used to treat the lumber will destroy the plain nails.

These nails are not recommended for use in treated lumber. We recommend that you use hot dip galvanized nails or stainless for use in treated lumber.

Answer:
If your Bostitch nail gun is a 21 degree plastic framing nailer, then these nails will work. Home Depot does offer this nail in a 1M tub, it is item 963148 (Grip-Rite item GR0141M).

Answer:
Please check with your manufacturer recommendations. If they state that the gun shoots a plastic collated, 21-degree nail than these nails will work in your nailer.
Thanks for your question and have a great day!
