Lights turn on and off every few minutes

I have owned this transformer for 5 years. It has worked excellent for me in that time without any problems. I keep it on the timer setting for 6 hours when the daylight ends and the photocell will turn the landscape lights on. In the past week, the transformer will not stay on for more than 2 minutes at a time. Once it turns off, it resets back on after about 30 seconds off. I tried to cover the photocell with electrical tape to make it seem like it is consistently dark, but the "on" and "off" continued to occur. When I leave the transformer on "O" or "on", the transformer keeps the lights on. However, this will be a challenge if I have to manually turn the light and off everyday. Can you help explain to me what is going on with my transformer. Thank you
Asked by: MACC
If the transformer works when on all you need to do is add an outdoor timer to the transformer and it will act as the timer does in the system, no need to replace the transformer.

Can I use an extension cord to provide power to the transformer?

Asked by: Vern
Hi Vern, as another user said, it is not recommended to use an extension cord with the product. You can do it and it will work, but it may cause damages to your transformer after a while.

Would this unit work for LED's?

My unit runs approx. 200w of landscape halogen lights (10 - 20w lights). if I convert to LED, the total would be about 40w-60w. Would this unit operate the 12v LED's as good as the halogens? I know it's a bit of overkill with the 300w capacity.

I have 100watts worth of LED's, and it works fine.

does this have both an A and B leg??? Jim at Home Depot

Asked by: Anonymous
Not sure of the terminology "leg," but if you mean two separate connections for two separate sets of wires/strands, the answer is no: can accept only one, two-stranded low voltage cable, so all lights connected to the unit are either all on, or all off. No separate "station" settings like you can do with a sprinkler controller, for example.

Customer Reviews

12-Volt Low-Voltage 300-Watt Transformer is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 30.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great!! I got this one to replace an older one that ants had moved into and caused it ti short out. I decided on this one after reading unfavorable reviews on the similar model made by Malibu. I like that this one has the photocell eye built in and not on the end of a long cord. Installation couldn't have been easier. Have had it for a few weeks now. Runs great! Really like the simple controls and the auto dusk to dawn setting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent 12V Transformer This is the second Hampton Bay transformer that I purchased to replace old ones(not Hampton Bay) that had worn out. They are so easy to install and maintain. I've had the first one about 2 years and never touch it, except to change the number of hours the lights are on and I only do that a couple of times a year. I can't wait for my last one to wear out, so that I have all of them Hampton Bay transformers. Easy to order online and no shipping costs. You can only get these online and with free shipping is a great purchase. Home Depot should carry them in their stores as these are FAR superior than the in store transformers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from More Features than Expected I am impressed, not only with the solid construction, but with all the features that allow me to control when the lights turn on and off.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Less Than One-Year and the Photo Eye Settings No Longer Work Bought this due to the reviews and the built-in photo sensor feature instead of the corded sensors on the Malibu transformers. Installed it this past spring and it will no longer work except when it's set to the "ON" setting (where it runs 24/7). So tired of having to deal with equipment than just won't last and stand the test of time - especially when that test of time is less than 6 months!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Piece of Junk This transformer box started to constantly turn my lights on and off in a repeating fashion within one year of its purchase. It apparently cannot be repaired and therefore is useless.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Worked well when it worked The unit was easy to set up and worked great for almost two years. Then, last week, it stopped working (warranty is good for a year after purchase). Checked out everything and couldn't find the problem; attached a spare I had and the lights came on just like they were supposed to. Have tried calling customer service line at Hampton Bay and repeatedly get the message that there is "nobody available." I'd call that customer disservice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly as described, ease of assembly, directions clear and concise Received promptly, appearance great for outside use, so very easy to install, instructions very simple to follow. A little heavier than my old one, but love the feature that shows you it is on automatic with a red A.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Good Quality Product This was my first departure from the Malibu/Intermatic family of low-voltage lighting transformers. The wiring hookup totally confounded me and was not clear in instructions, so I had to return to store. I felt like a dummy when they showed me how simple it was. It was then easy to install and has worked like a charm. My only complaint would be that the electric cord was not as long as Customer Service stated on the phone before I ordered it. It was barely long enough to suit the situation - I wish it were longer, so I could hang the unit higher off the ground and have the photocell higher on the shaded wall, but it's OK.
