Unfortunately, My mom has 3 cats and 1 dog and she would die if they get sick because of this product. Trying to find something that would rid her of insects but not hurt her animals.

There is a warning on label: Do not allow pets or children to play with bait station.
You might want to place them where pets and children cannot access them. The bait is self contained in a see through hard plastic container with a plastic cover that could be removed by a child or a dog that likes to chew things up.

Go ahead and use a child proof item on the cabinet you put them in if you have a very curious and crafty pet that gets into areas they shouldn't. I have a cat and have my baits placed where she can't get to them. (They should be placed near water sources, which is where roaches go looking for food/water, so they should be placed under sinks in bathrooms and kitchen. You can also place one in the bottom of the dishwasher - just remember to remove it when you do a load. Place one behind the refrigerator, the drawer at the bottom of the stove, or behind where you keep pots and pans.) These baits are small enough to strategically place them in out of the way places. Just put some thought into it or look for ideas from the on-line community and you will find some clever places to place them. Also look into natural products to use long-term (borax) - look it up online. Use the natural all the time and then put this bait down with any increased traffic and pull them back up when controlled to your liking. All holes and cracks in kitchen and bathrooms should be caulked or filled with steel wool (look this up too) pads and then sealed. (Cockroaches eat the steel wool and it kills them too.) Read Less

Answer:
You can use Hot Shot Ultra Liquid Roach Bait if you have pets, but you should place them in areas that are inaccessible to cats or dogs. Spray products, like Hot Shot Ant & Roach Plus Germ Killer, are also ok to use, but your mom should remove pets while spraying and keep them out of the treatment area until the spray is dry.

Why would you rent a place that is infested? Make the landlord fix it before you move in. Roaches carry disease and if the owner has not treated for roaches in ages you can guarantee the air quality will be awful. I hope you didn't sign a lengthy lease.

Answer:
If the apartment/house is empty, fogging before you move in will be very effective. Try Hot Shot Fogger (http://www.homedepot.com/p/Hot-Shot-Fogger-with-Odor-Neutralizer-HG-96181/205055621), making sure to follow all directions on the label. Use these baits continuously after to maintain control.

The highlighted product associated with your question is not a fogger. It is a bait trap. It does not release anything into the room that has to be avoided.
You simply open the trap, set it in the area where the pests travel. They are attracted to it and they are then trapped inside where they die.
Thank you for asking,

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 89 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good stuff Bought this new liquid roach bait due to good reviews and needed something that works for a rental property with major bug problems. The liquid is built into a plastic container where roaches enter and feed. Tenant says it is doing the job, which is a good thing for both of us! Easy to use, pull tab and set in kitchen, bath, near water sources, in cabinets, storage sheds, anywhere there is a bug problem. Economical and user friendly. August 13, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Effrective and Fast Florida has bugs! The Hot Shot liquid seems to be the fastest killer on the market. September 6, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Kills roaches quickly and keeps working This is the second or third time I've bought this roach bait, as I've found it to be very effective in controlling recurring roach infestations of a detached garage. The bait packages are very easy to prepare and place, and I prefer using these in lieu of sprays since I don't want to cause unnecessary harm to the various spiders and lizards that also occupy my garage and actually help control many other annoying insects that I prefer to not have around. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best product out there! My grandmother has had a problem with roaches for 4 YEARS and just today I decided to really fix the problem so instead of paying out the butt for a exterminator I went and bought hot shot and within HOURS I found 12 dead roaches already; mind you I just bought it today and it's only been 5 hours! I will definitely keep using this product! July 25, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by fine Extraordinary! In less than a week I have yet to see another reach. July 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by it kills!!! No mess and it kills! I placed 2 under the sink cabinet, 1 in upper cabinet, 1 on floor, 1 in the drawer, 1 in the bathroom floor, all are the places where I've seen the tiny black products of the roaches. The day next I placed it, I already saw 5+ dead roaches near the bait in the sink cabinet, big roach and small. A few days later I checked again, I saw a few more small dead roaches. I'm very happy with the results. My husband used to see roaches in the kitchen in the early morning when he got up for coffee but he says he hasn't seen any lately. I haven't seen the disgusting black tiny traces of the roaches either. Now it's been almost a month, there's only a little bit liquid left in the bait I'm ready to replace with the new ones and continue to use them. Why? because I still see a few dead tiny roaches once a while when I check the bait. I'm not sure how many are still out there growing or hatching. It's easier and feels better to clean those dead roaches than seeing their dirty products or them alive crawling around. They're hard to eradicate but I'm determined to make them disappear in front of my eyes! January 14, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This one really works, worth the price I have tried them all, this one really works. More effective and safer to use than other poisons and aerosols. The need for liquid is more deadly to bugs than food. Diatomaceous Earth is the next most effective, but it is messy. June 29, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Good product Easy to use and can be placed just about anywhere in the house to control roaches. Jury is still out on product because I only put them in a few weeks ago, and they're supposed to be effective for several months. But so far, I haven't seen any roaches inside since I placed them in the closet and attic. June 26, 2016
