How do I choose the right length for a downrod?

I have vaulted ceilings that are 18' high. I am replacing an outdated fan with a new one. The fan is on a slope mount, so it is not the full 18' height. If I choose a 48" downrod over a 36", will the fan be very wobbly?

Answer:
I'd go ahead and purchase the 48" downrod and get professional help because of the height of the ceiling. They can cut the longer downrod to the exact length needed easily with a hack saw.

Answer:
Thanks for your question! The best way to determine the correct downrod length is to find out how high your ceiling's junction box is from the floor. The junction box is what the fan will mount to. The length here will determine correct length of downrod.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Hunter 48" Ceiling Fan Down Rods Bought two Hunter 48" ceiling fan down rods for the house. Ceiling height was 13' so these down rods dropped fans to a lower height. They fit and work perfectly. March 1, 2016

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by match was perfect with fan We had a pro install the fan and extension. It matched the fan perfectly and looks great in the living room. with the high ceilings we just didn't feel it was safe to install it ourselves. He had no problem s with the product. August 27, 2015

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Don't get too excited I recommended this because I really had no choice. This is just a piece of pipe painted to match the fan. It is very overpriced .... A piece of pipe and a can of spray paint would be 1/4 the cost. This is ideal only if time is a factor. For the price paid should have come with wire (you will need) and connectors. June 10, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Down rod too long Rate a down rod? I tried to buy all the things I would need for a ceiling fan installation on a cathedral sloped ceiling. The problem was that the fan I was buying didn't give the dimensions on the box to know how far it would hang from the ceiling with the supplied down rod. The fan I bought tried to be everything in one box. It could be flush mounted to the ceiling, 3" down rod and 6" down rod included. Also you could use with or without a light kit. We didn't want to assemble the fan and then drive all the way back to the store to pick out a down rod so I bought the 48" down rod for the 15'-16' height area of the living room. Well, it ended up that the fan motor assembly was about 12" tall and the light kit was about 12". So now I had to figure how high I wanted the fan that would be where people would be walking underneath and high enough to allow the air to spread out in the room and not just blow straight down if it was too low. I ended up needing a 24" length down rod but didn't have time to go back to the store. The rod has threads on one end and a large pin that goes thru a hole on the other. We kept the threaded end and hack sawed off the other at 24". Then drilled a hole through it for the pin to fit just like on the original end. Good luck with yours! Maybe an alternate system would be to buy about 6 sizes of down rods and take back the ones you don't use. ? June 17, 2014
