Customer Questions & Answers

Can you back up with the tines engaged? I have read reviews of other brand aerators in which the single draw arm will bend when backing up.

Asked by: Anonymous
I have backed up with a Heavy Duty rental unit - The way that all aerators are designed, it is not a good idea to back up with tines lowered, I shredded the lawn when I did it. It has to do with the angle that the tines hit the ground. They are designed for forward only. Will it bend the draw arm - that I can't say.

Do the tines clog?

Seems that without some way to clear the tines as they rotate they would clog and not dig out plugs. Has this been a problem for anyone?
Asked by: Anonymous
I haven't seen that but I have only used 3 times.

The tines are replaceable, but I'm finding them priced at JD dealerships around $3.80 EACH.

40 in. Tow-Behind Plug Aerator is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 32.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Would buy again Missing 1 nut, box was torn and open, the lift handle would not fit in the slot. After finally assembled it worked fine. I would buy again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A little pricey, but great quality! The JD aerator is manufactured under contract by another brand available at HD. This one is significantly higher quality than the other. For example, the spoons are broken into 3 independently spinning sections, and (by necessity) there are two more supports from the weight tray to the spoon axle. This transmit the weight to the spoons in the center of the aerator better than the other brands. The aerator is very easy to assemble considering the JD assembly instructions are not always straightforward. The only issue I had was identifying which side was the "back" at the very beginning of the first step. Hint, the picture in the manual is misleading.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Value Simple, well-instructed assembly; high quality materials. With basic care this aerator should easily last my lifetime and then some. Does a very good job of aerating even a somewhat lumpy lawn.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Product, not so great service from John Deere I poured through the reviews here and the other sites before purchasing this product. They were all really accurate: high quality steel, torn packaging, inaccurate and challenging (not impossible) assembly instructions. However, it works well, especially if you are working on a half acre plus piece of yard. My only complaint was that one of the transport bolts snapped during assembly with very little torque. I called John Deere, and rather than just shipping me the one bolt, they referred me to a dealer that is in another state over an hour away. For a product that costs over $400, I would think that they could ship me the one dollar part. Otherwise, it worked like a charm with just the fertilizer I was going to put on the lawn as a weight (about 150lbs).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Aerator John Deere My yard is in terrible condition. Already this fine peice of equipment has gotten the grass to start to grow. It leaves nice big holes for seeds and water to sit in. This is the first peice like this that I have purchased from Home Depot and would highly recommend this to anyone in need of bettering their yard. It works like a charm. Thanks

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality piece This unit will last as long as you take care of it. It is heavy guage steel built to last a lifetime and worthy of the older Deere name. I have a 15,000 Sq ft lawn of clay soil. Was very impressed with the 3 to 2 1/2 inch plugs using 3 bags of quick cement for weight. I made 2 passes and had no problems turning, as the end tines are independent. You definetly get what you pay for on this one.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sturdy Quality; Poor Packaging & Poor Trouble Shooting Assistance Upon full assembly, the wheels were in the opposite direction. Tried to call John Deere affiliates for assistance. Unfortunately, some of the affiliates were far from amicable, and a formal complaint had to be filed with John Deere on one of them. Finally instructed by John Deere to call the manufacturer of the unit (Brinkly-Hardy). Their rep. (Brinkly-Hardy) was very helpful. E-mailed them photos of the problem and they were able to assist in the remediation of the problem. Overall great quality unit, but the shipped unit's packaging and the service from John Deere affiliates were far from stellar.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from quality issues with jd airator The axle arm came installed 180 degrees off. Took 45 minutes to correct it. Right well alignment is totally off, I have seen this comment on other reviews also. I just spent 1.5 hours assembling this once I got it to our cabin and I now need to disassemble to get in my car to return. A complete waste of an afternoon.
