Customer Questions & Answers

The water comes out either very hot or very cold, no in-between. Will replacing the mixer cap fix my problem?

I have a Kohler single handle tub faucet.
Asked by: Phil
Did you check your setting? You can control this with the settings for the maximum temperature. It is inside the mixer cap.

I have no hot water in the shower. Will replacing mixer cap fix my problem?

Asked by: Tim
First, confirm that you have a Kohler fixture. I know this unit works for Kohler. Not sure if this device is a universal replacement of multiple brands. Second, as long as you have hot water confirmed to the shower, you should have hot water coming out of the shower. One way to confirm hot water to the fixture is to check your bathroom sink(s) and whether the hot water is coming out of the faucet there. In 99.9% of the time the same hot and cold lines feed an entire bathroom and all of its fixtures within (I believe that is also code). Anyway, this mixer cap has in it a rubber diaphragm that is what ultimately controls the mixture of hot and cold water coming out of the shower faucet. It also helps to regulate water pressure in the event, say, a toilet is flushed on the same line, you won't get burned in the shower due to the sudden loss of cold water pressure. If you intermittently began or are all together experiencing no hot water coming out of the shower, a defective / failing mixer cap will be your culprit. Go ahead and also replace the all plastic pressure balance unit, as well. It is a separately sold, all plastic device with lots of rubber washers that helps to seat the mixing cap to the supply housing in the wall. Chances are, that the rubber washers are beginning to fail anyway and while you are in the wall now to replace the mixing cap, you might as well take care of the PB unit, as well. A failure of the PB unit will result at a minimum, of ieaking water within the wall cavity behind the fixture.

I replaced the Mixer cap for a leaking shower. The new cap is still leaking. Should I return it?

I have a shower that has leaked in the past. I replaced the mixer valve about 3 years ago and it was fine until recently when it started leaking again. I replaced it with a new mixer cap today and it is still leaking.

Thanks for the response Justine but it didn't answer the question. I replaced the "guts" The Kohler valve has 2 pieces. (I learned that the hard way) The valve was leaking 3 years ago and I replaced it with a valve From Home Depot. It started leaking again so I bought a new valve but after replacing it again, it was still leaking. After further investigation I found out that there was another replaceable part (PBU) behind the valve. I figured out how to remove it with Pliers and replaced it also. The PBU had a visible crack. It is now working fine with no leak. I did contact Kohler and the rep said that a crack in the PBU was probably not the cause of the leak but he was sending out a new valve and PBU under warranty. Total cost of repairs was about $100 and 3-4 hours time including Googgling.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Kohler Pressure Balance Valve Easy to install and price is where I thought it should be. Quality...The original lasted 7 years, but we live in Indiana with terrible water even with a softener. Make sure to mark or take pictures of the unit before you replace it.....this valve can be installed backwards.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Product The trick for DIY'ers will be figuring out how to get the knob off. Usually requires turning the part between the knob and backplate. The gaskets on the replacement were better than what the original came with. Expect it to last a long time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from KOHLER PARTS ON THE SHELF WOW! Dripping shower valve turned into a stream of water that could not be turned off. At 8:30PM entered my local Home Depot, walked to the parts section and there they were. Genuine KOHLER parts.Grabbed the one that matched my valve. In and out of the store in 10 minutes. Turn off water to shower valve. TIP:on the incoming water line you will see a straight slotted piece. Get a screwdriver and turn each one clockwise. you have just turned off the water. Follow the included directions to finish job.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Kohler Archer component This is the replacement part to the Kohler Archer mixer/pressure valve. The original one cracked, if you can believe that... Kohler should have designed it this way in the first place instead of creating the mayhem with the original. I spent $150+ more in labor and parts to get this thing right. My family told me to just get a different one, but not after all the parts were put on and it would require another ripping out of tile and wall board. It would be cheaper to fix this. It was great after I bought the redesigned valve...but what a hassle.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Specialty Product...and they had it This is a specialty valve for an older Kohler shower valve. I couldn't believe Home Depot had it! It was a super easy install and work perfectly.
