Questions & Answers

Are there a lot of false alarms for the explosive gas component of model KN-COEG-3?

Asked by: SuzyQ
My experience after 2 months of use is NO false alarms....I have located it in a small furnace room that contains both a natural gas furnace and natural gas water heater. As for placing it in the furnace room when the instructions say not to place in furnace rooms--It was my only common sense option in the raised ranch home.-----In any event if i had a gas leak and had placed the detector in an upstairs location or down stairs bedroom far from the furnace and incoming gas lines It may be tooooo late as the gas would never reach the detector in time.... Am I missing something by placing It in the furnace room for earliest possible detection of a gas leak? Agan,I have had NO false alarms and like the units, but you must take time and educate yourself thru the instructions.

propane

I have propane heat in a room in my garage. I never knew that you had to have a combination detector to have it to detect a propane leak. This unit does detect propane leaks? Just want to be sure before in purchase.

It's certainly a low-budget smoke detector and feels every bit as much (including the flimsy way it clicks to its mounting plate). The real detractor for me was that it's too small to use as a replacement for normal-sized smoke detectors (the traditional First Alert detectors). Unlike what's shown in some of the pictures, the mounting plate is the same diameter as the rest of the unit. That means the screw holes are too close together to use the existing holes - if you use one of the existing holes in your ceiling, the other hole will be exposed on the outside of the mounting plate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It could save your life! I purchased these on an impulse buy. I was walking down the water heater isle and saw these at such a great price. I figure I should pick up a few and install them throughout the house. I install them that weekend and forget about them. A few months later, I'm in my bedroom and I hear a loud beeping coming from downstairs. I go to investigate and find my living room full of smoke. The smoke was caused by frayed wires on a home entertainment system. If it wasn't for this alarm, the smoke would go unnoticed leading to an actual fire. At this price, I would say to buy one for your friends and relatives as well. There aren't many gifts that you can give that can save someones life.

First, I must confess I bought this product to replace a 7-year-old exact duplicate that had reached the end of its useful life. It was important to buy the exact same model because the painters had not painted behind the first one and all the other models on the market had a smaller footprint and would have shown the unpainted area. ;>) With that said, it still is an excellent product and I'd recommend it.

One of these is set within three feet of the gas leak we are experiencing when our gas dryer is on and the product does not even show there is a gas leak in the area. I was told by a gas man who came to check the leak that the product is a very poor gas detector; but for carbon monozide, it works very well. I am disappointed in the lack of performance for the gas leak.

Recommend anyone that has a gas furnace, hot water heater and/or fireplace to have at least one of these installed in your house. There are several choices for Carbon Monoxide Alarm Detectors but not a lot of choices for a combination Gas/Carbon Monoxide monitor in one unit.

The previous hard wired units were giving false alarms quite often. It was easy to install a regular outlet for these and I like the readout that shows if it's detecting anything and how much.

However, with a noticeable odor of natural gas in a laundry room the detector failed to alarm. To test it out I held it over an unlit gas stove burner and it still didn't alarm.
