Answer:
Wondering, the stainless steel model has stainless trim on the rear and the front of the cooktop. Both would have a black cooking surface area.

Can this cooktop be cleaned easily, without inadvertently turning on the burners, as the cleaning cloth swipes over the control panel?

I am newly considering this style, versus "real knobs", and want to learn more about how it functions in the real world. Does the 5-year warranty cover the under-the-glass controls?

Answer:
There is a Control Lock feature that avoids unintended use of the surface cooking areas. If Control Lock is activated when the cooktop is off, the cooktop is locked out, and the surface cooking areas cannot be turned on by the cooktop touch control.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Very attractive cook top but with some major issues We bought 4 KitchenAid products at the same time (fridge, oven, micro and cooktop). The cooktop was the only item we have had problems with. While very attractive, the shiny finish does not appear to be mar resistant. After limited usage, we already have some scratches, and some clear marring - even with recommended pots and pans. Our previous top had a matte finish and held up over 16 years - despite countless family gatherings and multiple cooks. Only in the past year did it shown signs of wear. Also, the controls on this model are very complicated. We should not have to treat a cooktop with kid gloves. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from cooktop I just had this cooktop installed last week. I have only cooked two things on it, but since I am not use to the temperature feature yet, both items boiled over. Now my brand new cook top is stained and ugly. Nothing I tried removed the stains. The whole purpose in buying this flat item was because I was told it was easy to clean. I have just ordered the cleaning kit that Kitchen Aid recommends and hope it works., but until then I have to look at a stained boil over mess. It was beautiful when brand new! Rated 4 out of 5 by from fantastic 5th element we have had this for about a month. love having the extra element in the middle and the fact that it is larger than your typical large element. great for the bigger pots and pans. love that you can choose the size of the element so if you have a bunch of smaller pots on the go and need the extra small element you can set a bigger one to a smaller size only the inner ring heats up. Still getting used to the temperature controls. they are hotter than our previous stove. that will come with time. Only issue we have so far is that the control centre is sensitive so if you place a pot or pan or cloth, anything really, on it it will turn the whatever is on off. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Glad I Bought This I bought this because the top-of-the-line GE I bought six years ago was notoriously unreliable and was no longer being serviced by GE repairs, making the frequently needed parts nearly impossible to come by. Buying this KitchenAid was more than an up-grade, it was a game changer. I like to cook and I frequently have three or four things going at once. Managing the heat elements from one control panel is a breeze and I have no complaints, only praise. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost perfect We just purchased a full line of Kitchen-aid products for our new kitchen. The 36" cook-top is so much nicer than the 30" standard versions. The extra 6" does not seem like a lot but it makes all the difference. Overall this unit is good but there are a few minor issues that you cannot know from a showroom. The surface is more difficult to clean than our previous Samsung glass cooktop. Even using the proper cooktop cleaner, it tends to smear as if there is a layer of oil on the surface. It takes a little more time and effort than I would like to spend to get it nice and clean and have that mirror finish that is expected from a glass cooktop. I like the fact that there are no knobs to trap dirt, but the buttons are sometimes difficult to use. the buttons are not as sensitive to touch as I would like and I have to push the buttons multiple times to get the desired result. I also wish that Kitchen-aid would offer a bridge on their standard model. The only 36" model available with the bridge is an induction model and we did not want to buy all knew pots and pans. The only other negative is the gap between the bottom of the cooktop and the countertop. The installers assured me that they were putting the gasket in the proper way, but food can get stuck under the cooktop because of this gap. Eventually I will just put a bead of caulk around it to close the gap but for the money, it should come with a proper gasket that seals the outer edge to the mounting surface so that there is not a gap under the unit.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Hard to clean We chose this stove top for our built in kitchen in our brand new home. We chose all KitchenAid appliances however this glass stove top has stains that I can not remove. I have owned a glass top stove for many years and this one is by far the hardest to clean. The stains seem like they are etched in the glass. We moved in a month ago and use it daily, I'm afraid to see what it will look like in a year.
