The drill bit is stepped to avoid the cutter slamming into the work when the drill pokes through. But most times us electricians just push like heck to get the job done. Put a fender washer on the drill in front of the cutter. When the drill blows through, the cutter won't dig into the work and damage things. Happy Cutting!

Was remodeling a kitchen and the house had a mix of wood and steel studs. Needed to make some horizontal wiring runs through the steel studs so I bought this to make the holes. Worked well in a regular drill but was much better when I switched to a hammer drill. It was about $25 at the time which, based on the few studs I had to do, it might have been cheaper to just replace the steel studs with wood, but now I have it and it looks like it will last a long time.

These Klein carbide cutters are pretty much all I use nowadays for electrical knock-outs in the smaller sizes - other than enlarging a hole, obviously. Being in the trade for almost 30 years, I have been admittedly a little slow to trying new ways of doing things at times, but I'm sure glad I finally got around to purchasing a couple of these.

Needed to install a 1/2" fitting into an electrical box where no KO existed. A bit on the costly side. Drilled through the steel with some ease. Hole was a little oversized, however. The spring around the drill helped to "eject" the cut slug. The center pilot drill keeps everything going true.
