Answer:
All I want to add is that Fluke is the preferred industrial brand and have long history of quality. Now seeing more Klein meters used but all say it's too new to compare and they will let me know later. For the price, I'm trying Klein. More features and 1/4 the price!

Great question. I bought the Fluke tone & probe and had no end of trouble trying to tone down an ethernet line. Note that I had purchased it to tone down an electrical line, for which it worked very well. Later, I bought the Klein VDV Scout LT tool because I had other ethernet work to do. The Scout has a toner feature in it so I thought I would give it a try and it turns out the Fluke probe picked it up just fine... the Klein/Fluke combo worked great! So I have to suspect that there was something defective about the ethernet side of the Fluke tone generator, which I have now returned as defective. I am considering giving the Klein probe a try, but I can already see one feature of the Klein that I will miss... the headphone jack. Read Less

Does the probe have to make contact with the wire to trace circuit or does this have a proximity detector, trace circuits through walls?

Answer:
The Tone Cube needs to contact the wire, the Probe does not. The Klein Tools Tone Cube & Probe plus Kit allows you to trace wire paths and identify cables in common wiring systems, it is not a circuit tracer.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.0 out of 5 by 7 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Wire Toner The capabilities of the toner are good, but too bad that it isn't as compatible with the Klein Data line tester as the Ideal toner is. April 7, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by No good for tracing copper The other reviewers seem to have used it for RJ11/RJ45, but I tried to use if for copper household power wiring, and found it to be useless. I had the breaker for the line turned off (necessary to ensure you don't wreck it) but the probe would cut out at the smallest sign of power on adjacent lines (literally about 16" away). I've used a friends tone/probe before (Triplett's Fox & Hound) so I'm certain I'm using it correctly for wiring and not had the problem with his. Returning this for a different product. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent Purchase Ever This is a great product and very easy to use. I didn't have to use Dummy's book to use this Tool :) August 11, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Klein TONEcube and PROBE+ VDV500-808 - WORKS WELL I purchased the Klein TONEcube/PROBE+ wire tracer to identify numerous (75+) Cat6 and speaker wires roughed in to a new-build house, but that had not been labelled by the installer. Since all wiring came to a large single bundle in the basement, I was looking for a tester that had enough sensitivity to detect signal even though there was potential for significant coupling. I attached the tone cube to each Cat 6 or speaker wire in turn using the 'dual-lead' method in the instructions. Worked like a charm. I was able to readily identify each wire from the massive bundle, quickly and easily. I had adjusted the probe for what was likely mid-way sensitivity, and was able to quickly pick the target wire-end out of the mass as the signal tone guided me to the individual wires. Construction wise, the unit seems fairly well built, but does have a fair bit of plastic in its construction. I would rate the generator and probe pair as heavy-duty consumer/light to medium-duty commercial. The carrying bag is padded somewhat, but it doesn't have any internal framing that would otherwise guard the probe's tip. The bag was a tight fit for the probe itself, so care must be taken when storing the probe in the bag. Overall, very happy with the kit. More expensive than some of the simple units, but it worked like a charm. If I was a linesman in the trades, I might look for a more robust unit, but for DIY'ing and light handyman duty, this is an excellent unit. DnA May 16, 2015

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Cheap plastic Made with cheap plastic. Feels flimsy and no care for how toner and wand is made March 12, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Simple to use and reliable. Able to use right out of the box. Accidently cut my land line phone cable and it allowed me to fix quickly. January 1, 2013
