VDV LAN Scout Jr. Tester is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 23.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pricy but works This tester is a little pricy for no more than what it does, but it has worked flawlessly every time I have used it. I used it on every length of cable I have and it showed which ones had problems.

This product is a fantastic tool for those who deal with LAN/Ethernet cables. Having the remote connection makes it far easier to discover cable problems by eliminating the need to have both ends of the cable in the same place (which can be difficult if cables are run through walls or ceilings). This tool paid for its self on the day I purchased it a week ago, helping to solve a very complex cabling issue at work by aiding in identifying the bad cables in the bundle, eliminating the need to replace all the cable connectors or cables that run to the ceiling and across the building. One or two bad cables can bring down an entire network. Simply attach the remote to one end of the cable and attach the main tool to the other end and press "test". The tool will indicated a good cable "PASS" or will show open, short or split connection that requires a new connector or cable to be installed. The tool doesn't tell you which end the fault is on, so replace both ends to be sure before pulling the entire cable. This tool eliminated the need to replace hundreds of feet of cables that would have required a scissor lift and hours to accomplish. This tool made my job easier than expected and I highly recommend this tool for anyone who works with LAN/Ethernet cables. Also a great testing tool to have if you fabricate your own LAN/Ethernet cables.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Found my stupid mistake in less than a minute I've made a number of ethernet cables without a tester before, but after two failed attempts to make a 100 footer, I broke down and bought this tool to figure out what was wrong. Within seconds, it told me what the problem was: I had wired one end of the cable exactly backwards, making it a crossover cable instead of a straight cable. I must be getting old and senile, but now that I have this tool, I can continue pretending that I know what I'm doing for a few more years. I realize that there are cheaper testers out there, but I don't think they would have diagnosed this particular problem so exactly. The display shows exactly how the two cable ends are connected, which is bound to be a huge time-saver in the future.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Should have bought this a long time ago This was exactly what i wanted. Good quality and simple. This found my network problem in about 5 minutes. I had been pulling my hair out for a week. There a cheaper ones on the internet but this one feels like it will last. It was simple, i didn't even have to read the instructions. It will be a new permanent addition to my networking tool bag.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worthless garbage Quality control is garbage. After just a few months...and maybe a half-dozen uses...the unit started reading every single cable tested as having half its wires "open" (not connected). One gets one pays for, and this is cheap worthless junk.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Handy tool for occasional electrician I do IT management as a second duty in small company. This tool is very useful in troubleshooting in-wall wiring as well as patch cable. More comprehesive analysis than $9 simple RG45 continutity tester. I literally threw away the $9 tester.
