Odor?

I have seen reviews that complain about the terrible odor. Is this because the tub needs to be cleaned first, as one suggested, or does the door need to be kept open after a wash so mildew doesn't form?

There is a bit more work required with a High efficiency washer. When the load of wash is done, you need to thoroughly dry the inside door, and wipe away all the water in the gasket until it is almost dry. Always leave the door open at least a crack. Every month you are to wash the gasket with a bleach solution and let dry. The washer will tell you when you need a tub clean. When that happens, add a cup or two of chlorine bleach to the drum and run the tub clean cycle. When it finishes, do a rinse and spin cycle to clean up any leftover bleach. Always use HE detergent.
I have owned my washer for a month now and I have no trace of any odor. I never pre-cleaned my washer. I just ran the rinse and spin cycle as the instructions said to do.

Answer:
With older models, yes, keep the door open for a day or 2 after washing to let it dry and air out. The new model - 2013 - has a little "stop" area that keeps the door slightly ajar so it dries out and doesn't have to be kept open part or all the way. That is a good feature of the newer models (as I'm sure there have been lots of complaints about this).

Use H.E. washer cleaner once a month. I don't close my door all the way. So far, after one month, I have no odor. I did clean mine first. But, I did just to make sure nothing was in it.

In addition to the above suggestions; the sales lady at Home Depot told me that a bad odor can occur due to using too much detergent. With this being a front load washer, only a very small amount of detergent is necessary (approx. 1-2 tablespoons is all!!!)

I've heard the same thing but have not experienced it myself. A couple tips that may help alleviate odor. First, wipe the rubber ring around the door off after you are done washing for the day. This includes the inside of the ring. Doing this will prevent a small amount of water from sitting in that area and mildewing. Second, leave the door open until the last load is dried in the dryer so it dries out Read More

Answer:
The key to this is after a load is done, you can't shut the door completely. Just closed it enough until it hits the magnet on the unit to keep the door from swinging open. That way, the unit is able to be be aired out and dried out. You don't want all that moisture locked in there load after load. That's how mold occurs and it's impossible to get that nasty small out.
Hope this helps.
