Product Overview

Tamper resistant outlets meet NEC to protect children from electrical shock. They have built-in shutters that block insertion of most small objects. Look for the marks "TR" or "Tamper Resistant" to assure it's an authentic protective outlet.

California residents: see   Proposition 65 information

  • Mechanical shutter mechanism prevents access to contacts unless a 2-pronged plug is inserted, helping ensure that foreign objects will be locked out
  • TR symbol on receptacle face assures they meet the 2008 NEC section 406.11 code requirements
  • Ultrasonically welded for additional assembly security
  • Base and face made of high impact thermoplastic

Customer Questions & Answers

can I use 15 amp receptical on 12 gauge 20 amp circuit?

Asked by: Dwain
It can be used by NEC standard, but should not be wired through the outlet. In other words, you shouldn't connect 4 wires to the outlet. connect the wires in the box with wire nuts and a pig tail, then wire the outlet to the pig tail. This is because the yoke of the outlet is rated 15 amps. The other option would be to downgrade the circuit breaker to 15 amps.

what does isolated ground mean?

what does isolated ground mean?
Asked by: simba
Isolated ground devices are used in applications where electrical noise can be detrimental to the sensitive electrical equipment. They are seen mostly in hospitals where they have a discrete ground connection to the electrical panel, to avoid any electromagnetic interference. The ground terminal is connected to the ground connections of the receptacles only and not physically connected to a grounding plate like most receptacles.

20 Amp Tamper Resistant Duplex Outlet, White is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from worse decision ever bought 37 outlets for our new addition, 10 are defective. If you can plug anything into them, the plug does not go all the way in so it won't work. 4 of these you can't even get the plug into. worried about a child putting something into them , NO nothing goes into them. they make a good decoration or so the inspector thinks you wired to code. I'm taking all of them out and replacing with plugs that work. never again would I buy these.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Test before buying We bought 11 of these. Three were defective - our two-prong nonpolarized and three-prog plugs wouldn't stay in. Not only did we have to return the defective items, but we didn't discover the issue until after the electrician had left; we had to pay an extra $100 for him to come back and replace the defective items, so the poor build quality cost us a ton. In our area this manufacturer has a captive audience - this is the only brand stocked by "everybody" - including the all nearby electrical supply houses. If you buy these, bring a nonpolarized plug (i.e., both prongs the same size) and test each outlet before actually purchasing it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor Design As another reviewer has stated, test these before buying or installing. I purchased 3 of these without thinking to test them before installing. After installation I found that plugs would only go about 3/4 of the way into the outlet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Work like they should These outlets do the trick and work just like they should. The tamper resistance is nice and they aren't too hard to plug into.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tamper resistant is now part of the NEC. Use them! :-) Tamper resistant receptacles may protect a child; that is why they are now part of the National Electric Code (NEC). Yes they are a tiny bit awkward to get used to, but I use them on all my jobs and I rarely hear complaints. Note: this is a 20 amp receptacle; you must use a 20 amp receptacle on a 20 amp dedicated circuit, but I would use this on any outdoor circuit and for heavy-duty appliances like a refrigerator, large air conditioner, a shop receptacle, etc. Qualification: 25 years as an electrician.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Got 4 of em and they're SLICK Another reviewer apparently had a problem... No idea. These things are cool. I wouldn't necessarily trust them to stop a determined kid from sticking something in there, but I'm using them on my metal working table to prevent grinder trash and shavings from flying in there. EXCELLENT product. The grade of plastic is very confidence inspiring. Terminals are spacious and very sturdy.
