This is a standard light switch but has a neon filament that glows when it's off to help you find the switch in the dark.
While I use these with CFL bulbs they really aren't designed for use with these kinds of bulbs. YMMV. The reason for this is in order to light the neon bulb a very small current must pass through the light bulb in order to power the neon bulb in the switch. With CFL bulbs this can cause the ballast in the bulb to flicker slightly. I have not experienced this problem but be aware.
Due to this you need to know that the neon bulb will not light up if a bulb is not installed in the fixture you are controlling. Also, because the current used to light the neon bulb is so small a bad connection can cause the bulb not to work. If you push your wires into the recessed holes and wires are dirty, the switch may function to turn on/off your fixture but will not light the bulb in the switch, make sure you have a good connection to your electrical supply.
Otherwise these work great, a little expensive but if it's what you're looking for worth the price.

I bought this illuminated switch because I thought it would look sharp in my living room for my ceiling fan I was installing. Anyhow I ran the line added this switch and hooked up an outlet to test the circuit. I put my outlet tester in the outlet and the tester lit up that everything was wired correctly but the switch was off, it should not have been getting electricity. I tear the outlet apart and make sure it is connected correctly it is I flip the switch on and the outlet tester lights up, I then flip it off and it stays on. I check the wire with a voltage pen and it says it is hot......I am going crazy right now thinking I have screwed up wiring down the line and I spend a couple hours checking the outlets on the circuit they are all fine. So I log onto home depot to see this switch and see previous reviewers stated that it continuously delivers a small current to keep the light switch illuminated which would be the reason I was getting false positives with my testers. So the tester picks up a minimum of 50 volts so somehow there is more than 50 volts traveling through this line when switched off which I was not comfortable with. So in the end I will be saving this switch for another project maybe a shed or something else.
Other factors that I rated this two stars was that the light is not bright at all and I would have rather had a green or blue light instead of the red. Also compared to the other light switches which run 3 dollars average this one was quite a bit more expensive for just a little light. Overall not the best purchase I have made

This product CANNOT be used with LED rope lighting. The inadequate construction allows LED rope lighting to continuously draw sufficient current that prevents the switch from illuminating in the OFF position. No LED lighting restrictions are included in the product information. This information was verified by Leviton Technical Support.
