Customer Questions & Answers

how long do the ballast last and how do you know when they are bad

Asked by: Anonymous
The newer ballasts last much longer than the old analog ballasts, I had a business for 24 years with '4-Light Troffers' and the old ones would even overheat every once in awhile and emit an odor. I even had the fire department over and the scanned the ceiling with their 'heat detectors' and when they went over the 'offender' it was obvious which one was 'silently smoking', in other words, it wasn't visible but it sure smelled like a fire! Once those were replaced with the aid of a grant through our power company, we never replaced another ballast and even the new T-8 bulbs last longer. As mentioned, if the lamps don't light when replaced, that's the sign. Replacing all lamps at the same time also seems to be a wise move, don't pair old with new.

How do you replace the bulbs?

Asked by: Anonymous
TURN OFF THE POWER TO THE FIXTURE, OPEN THE COVER AND REMOVE THE TUBES. INSTALL THE NEW TUBES, CLOSE COVER AND TURN ON THE POWER. NEXT AND MOST IMPORTANT STEP IS TO LEAVE THE LIGHT ON FOR AT LEAST 6 HOUR TO BURN IN THE LAMPS TO GET THE FULL LIFE OUT OF THE LAMPS, IF YOU DON'T YOU WILL NEED TO REPLACE THE LAMPS MORE OFTEN TO TO PREMATURE BURNOUT. IT WORKS THE SAME FOR THE LITTLE SCREW-IN CLF LAMPS FOR LIGHTS TOO.

Can this be surface mounted to drywall ceiling?

Asked by: Jmh
Not really as they're designed to fit into a 'drop ceiling', they'd look odd without the framing of the dropped ceiling. I have some that are not the 'troffer' design and have steel sides, but not these units. You can find units that are designed for what you want, but not these.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not A Quality Product!!!! This product while being of better quality then the lowes brand is poorly crafted. The metal is thin, and the ballast is garbage... (also after some research the ballast isnt covered in manufacturers warranty.) I originally purchased 4 of these lights when i installed them later that day 2 were faulty and did not work. I exchanged them for two new units, installed them and all worked as expected. Jump ahead to it now being 19 days outside of the 90 day home depot return policy and two of the units ballast have once again failed. Save yourself the trouble and buy something else...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great retrofit fixture To this point, we have installed 22 of these fixtures to replace the 20 year old 2x4 fixtures. They are quick and easy to install with built-in tie-down clips required by code saving us time and effort. once the old fixture is down, you can install the new fixture complete in less than 10 minutes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good drop ceiling light I installed this light in my basement laundry room (drop ceiling), its very bright, was easy to install, light wieght, and a good price. Two issues are keeping me from giving it a 5 star: 1. No installation instructions, now its pretty straight forward but if you are someone who likes to read before you dive in dont expect to get any paperwork with it. 2. Sharp corners and really sharp lip inside the light cover....my dad handed the light up to me while i was on the ladder a cut himself pretty bad.... So wear gloves!

I bought these to replace 3 HID lights spaced equally in the middle of my shop . my shop is 38x60 with 12 foot hang ceiling. I bought 6 panels and installed them. I'm very very pleased with the amount of light they produce. I was going to get led lights but these were more in the budget plus they come with bulbs a plus. I am going to replace the remaining t T12's in the shop with these panels.
