can i replace the bulb with a metal halide bulb?

Asked by: Anonymous
No. Metal Halide,High Pressure Sodium, and Mercury Vapor have their own special ballasts. There are 2 types of Metal Halide ballasts: Pulse start, and Probe Start. Mercury Vapor ballasts are probe start. High pressure sodium ballasts come with come with and capacitors (Not all do.) Therefore all 3 are HID sources and use high voltage ballasts. This can start a 50w Mercury Vapor bulb. But the conclusion is: the voltage is too low to start any HID lamp. Put the Metal Halide bulb on the correct ballast. Hope this helps!

would it be ok to use a fluorescent 60 watt bulb , such as the new coiled ones in this particular lamp ?

Asked by: timmel7
The coiled fluorescent 60 watt bulb may work if the base is the right size but it is doubtful that it would be as bright as the 65 watt lamp.

I have purchased three of these units in the last two years. one for my patio, one for my shop and one for a good neighbor. These units really throw out the lite. It is well constructed and easy to install. As a retired Electrical Contractor, I would recommend this fixture for any DIY'er.

I have recently purchased two of these lights and they both fail to work properly. They are constantly going on and off during the night and cannot be relied upon to provide security lighting. The least amount of condensation will cause them to go on and off and any fluctuation in power will also cause them to fail. I have had similar lights in the past and they did not do this. I have tried changing the light photo sensor and that had no effect on it's poor performance. I would recommend that Home Depot discontinue selling this item until the manufacturer can provide a light that does what it is supposed to do.

Depending on your skill and area that you live in you can make this light last a long time. Note that you can disassemble it. Usually the high voltage devices on heatsinks fail, then the capacitors fail. Spend a few bucks for the devices and components (Look online or in your parts box). Use your soldering iron and your good to go. I highly recommend using the good ol' mercury vapor lights. The ballasts last long and photocell is replaceable. A good bulb to use in your mercury vapor area light: Westinghouse BT-28 Lifeguard 175w lamp;Life: 24,000hrs+. Get a older 175w bulb: 2006 or earlier, and get a new one: 2009 or earlier, then compare them. Hope that helps!

It replaced another model that wore out and I didn't want to repair. I installed it in the same location and the lighted area is the same. All works well at this time. I will keep a record on how long the bulb lasts. Now I want to thank the gentleman named Dale at the Home Depot located in League City, Texas. He was a great help in seeing that all the parts were in the container and especially helpful in locating the item, since this is Christmas season and stores have a habit of moving things around at this time of year. I had a chat with the store manager, Patricia, and told her how helpful he was. Today's date is Nov. 8th, 2016.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Lighting For the Price I will begin replacing my high pressure 70 watt sodium lights with these, as the sodium lights fail. I find that the light quality is much better than the yellow sodium lights and since I have 8 security cameras, the true color is displayed and recorded. The 65 watt fluorescent is about the same light as the 70 watt sodium, but better quality. I must say that the globe and reflector is kind of flimsy, so don't mount it where branches can hit it. Also, use flat washers when mounting the aluminum housing to your structure for a better anchoring. The price is very reasonable at about half the cost of the sodium, so I bought three to start
