Replacing a 20-year-old Moen Faucet - can I keep the valve?

I'm hoping to replace an existing Moen shower faucet with this Trim Kit, for an updated look.

By the lengthy description of Moen valve types in other answers (thanks Moen! :) ) it sounds like I don't have a "PosiTemp" valve in there now because it's currently a Push/Pull operation to turn it on/off (control the water volume).

There's nothing wrong with the current valve, and it was a guest bathroom with little use for these 20 years, so I'd rather not replace it.

My questions:
1. Do I have a valve-type other than PosiTemp? If so, How do I know which of the other 2 types it is?
2. Is it possible to get this "Eva" style Trim Kit without a requirement for a PosiTemp valve? Or what do you recommend as a similar looking style in the other valve type?

Hello Eric. Thank you for interest in Moen tub and shower products. The Eva trim includes the exterior cover pieces except for the showerhead. This trim kit is designed to fit on a PosiTemp valve which is not included. Moen makes three basic types of single handle valves. Visually, they all look very similar; however there are major operational differences.
The Posi-Temp is a pressure balanced cycling valve. To activate the water you rotate the handle counter-clockwise. As you continue to turn it, the valve will give you a mix of hot and cold at straight up 12 o'clock and the handle reaches its furthest point at 9 o'clock offering full, hot water. Posi-Temp does NOT have volume control, so the amount of water remains constant. In short, the handle rotates only; there is no push pull action to this valve. The two screws that hold the 7" round escutcheon plate to the wall are located at 2 and 7 o'clock. If you wanted to change the look of this fixture without changing the valve you can switch to any trim style that is Posi-Temp.
Moentrol is also pressure balanced but has a push-pull type handle to activate the water. If you pull it out half-way, you will get half the volume. If you pull it out all the way, you will get the water at full force. Turn the knob to the left for hot and the right for cold. Simply push it in to turn it off. It also has temperature memory, which means if you shut the water at a warm temperature setting (say the 10 o'clock position). It will be at that same warm temperature next time you pull out the handle. The two screws that hold the 7" round escutcheon plate to the wall are located at 2 and 7 o'clock. If you wanted to change the look of this fixture without changing the valve you can switch to any trim style that is Moentrol.
Moen Standard valves are non-pressure balanced and have a push-pull type handle to activate the water. The two screws that hold the 7" round escutcheon plate to the wall are located at the bottom at 5 and 7 o'clock. If you wanted to change the look of this fixture without changing the valve, you can switch to any trim style that has the screws located at the bottom and is Standard or you can purchase the Moen part 145058 that will adapt the Standard valve to accept Moentrol trim.

Rated 3.6 out of 5 by 5 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great trim kit at a great price This trim kit fits the Moen posi-temp valve so well. The oil rubbed bronze looks so nice. Installation was easy and it looks just like I wanted it to look. It is easy to adjust and it works wonderfully. I even dropped a screw down the shower drain (just my luck) and it was a cinch to replace. It works flawlessly and the price was about 40% off retail. Fast delivery and great condition. An A+ deal for me. October 23, 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Sturdy feel, NOT spot-free. Dirty finish Solid, sturdy feel. I am really frustrated with the finish. It absorbs EVERY spot and does not shine up- even when dried immediately. Always looks dirty and spotty. The installation was a pain and the components limit how hot you can get the water (ideal for a kids bathroom, but not for an adult shower). I like that it does not come with the shower head, so we could install a handheld shower. The knob hot and cold indicators are so faded that you cannot see them through the spots after ONE USE. We even have a water softener. There is no excuse for this poor finish. I am not happy with this at all. Also the handle sticks out too far from the escutcheon. BEWARE that you have your plumber measure right and recess it in the wall far enough or it will look unfinished and there's nothing you can do about it, expect rip the tile and wall apart. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by easy to use installed easily looks great love the finish easy to use July 8, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great looking Bought 2 of these for my newly remodeled shower with dual shower heads. They look and work great. Much better than the old white trim kits I had. November 12, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Product will not work with current valve/hardware Not able to evaluate, because the Moen trim/fixtures will not fit on the original valves in shower. December 1, 2011
