Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Reesibits DIYer removed existing 36"unit & installed this Whirlpool UXD8636DYS1
Ordered online from Home Depot and it was shipped with undamaged box and well protected. It's great receiving notifications when it will arrive and shippers brought the box inside our home. This unit replaced an 8 year old JennAir downdraft that would no longer come up and would have been to costly to repair.
My husband spent a few hours with my help as the "goffer"...go fer this, go fer that...to remove the old unit and install this new one. It helps that he is mechanical engineer and familiar with heating/air ductwork, etc. Not recommended for a novice. It would have gone even quicker if he had a more able-bodied assistant to lift the heavy new unit in and out of the "hole" and we had to lift this one out because of the granite which was not fun.
The instructions were adequate, the screws were cheap Chinese-made and they actually extended past what they wrote is the width of the unit. It required a dremel to slightly grind the granite so the screws holding the rivets at the top would fit.
Performance: The new air flow is tremendous. We tested and went outside to feel airflow from the duct. Inside, it's not quite as quiet as we would like but it works beautifully to remove odors. The on/off switch for the fan is on the right side of the raised unit as you face it.
Vertical Leveling: due to tight space, it was maybe a 10th of an inch out and we had to run to a autoparts store to buy a $5 gadget so that my hubby could turn the screw so it would drop into place. Whirlpool could definitely improve those screws and spend a dollar more to use better quality. That was the most time-consuming part and I'm sure would have been nothing for someone who installs these all the time.
Its a nice feature that the grills are removable & easily pop out and can go in dishwasher to clean.
Fun note: the old unit was taken to the recycle center and earned $1.68 in weight.

We recently had our entire kitchen remodeled and I installed the telescopic downdraft system myself. It was much easier then I thought it would be to install. The form and fit is excellent and the four speed fan operation gives you the desired exhaust needed. The twin filters are easily removed and cleaned and the stainless steel is a good look and also easy to clean. When not in use the telescope hides in the cabinet out of sight. We are very pleased with this product and highly recommend it especially for a kitchen island installation.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by MikeC Nice But Squeaks - Waiting for Service / Replacement
Reviewed several downdrafts and decided on this Whirlpool model for features and price. 600 cfm and one of the tallest. Nice stainless, big vent grills, four position speed switch is rather crude and not precise. Easy install - sort of. The downdraft snorkel squeaks most annoyingly as the snorkel raises and lowers. Something wrong with the vertical leveling guides. White grease residue keeps reappearing on snorkel guide edges. 8/10/15 - contacted customer service for evaluation / replacement. To be continued.

Replacing one that was in for 20 years. Went with this one because of the higher CFM's. They are amazing. No odors at all.

This vent works great! So excited to have it after 7 1/2 years not using the vent on the JennAir since all it did was suck the flame. This blower is a bit noisy when on high but I'd rather have a bit of fan noise than a stinky house. Highly recommend. It's beautiful too.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by SmoothFlow2015 A Decent Vent But...
This vent was installed by a builder. The vent was not anchored properly, so it wobbled when turned on. About one month later it was broken and replaced. The other problem was the air duck connected to the air outlet. The air flow had to make three turns before it went out. The seemed to weaken the sucking power of the vent. I am not sure if this is also the cause of the broken one. It is a decent vent. But, if it is not installed right, problems will appear.
