How do you keep dust collector on?

Asked by: Wayneled
Leave the Allen wrench in place. Notice the two protrusions on the dust port. When you you install it, lightly tap it in place with your fist. It will not come off.

What is the minimum RPM

Asked by: al
Metabo says that its RPM is 4200 - 11000 RPM, no load speed, and 8500 RPM at rated load. When I am sanding the speed seems to change a little, going faster and then slower. Although I couldn't find anything on the website specifically saying that it has interior electronics which automatically adjust the speed, I suspect that it does.

As a professional woodworker I have tried most of the 5" Random Orbit Sanders out there. They all have two problems which develop with time. The brake wears out, and the vibrating mechanism gets eccentric and begins to sand unevenly. On some models these problems are easily repairable. On others there is just too much difficulty. I just began using the SXE 450 Turbotec 6" last week, so it's too early to tell if it will develop the same problems. But I can say this; this sander is excellent. It is solidly and tightly made. It has adjustablilty as to speed, power, and orbit size. It is heavy enough to need minimal pressure as it sands. I own a shop vac and I had to purchase a universal adapter to get a good transition from my vacuum to the sander. Perhaps the Ridgid vaccum makes the connection better. I don't know. I had the problem of the dust collector provided with the sander shaking off during use. No matter since I use the shop vac. Top ratings. A good buy at a good price for the professional. Home Depot carries several grits in 6" 6-hole hook-and-loop. If these don't offer the grit you want then others are readily available online.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent 6"/ 6 Hole Sander The Metabo 450 SXE TurboTec is probably the best electric random orbit sander I've used. I knew it was a well made when I put it in my hands. This tool is comfortable in my hands and has very little vibration. It has features no other sanders have. The two different orbits is a welcome addition. For rough, quick sanding, use the 1/4" orbit and for fine sanding, it can be changed to 1/8" orbit. This sander also has variable speed and a booster for an even higher speed. Personally, this booster brings it up to a top speed other sanders have without this switch. This is the first sander I bought with variable speed. I never really saw a need for it, but let's see how well it works. I'll let you know with an addendum to this review if allowed to do so. It also is the weight of an older model Porter Cable 6.5 amp right angle sander, but isn't awkward to use on flat surfaces. The extra weight is a plus because there isn't really a need to push to get the job done. I'm in the middle of a job right now and haven't had the need for power sanding at this point. I do all my sanding before doing the assembly. However, I pulled a fairly rough board of black walnut and sanded it without any problem. This is an outstanding sander and I'm sure it will be with me for a long time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Metabo disc sander You get what you pay for is a true statement when it comes to this sander.Only issue is most sanders are 5" so the discs are hard to find in all grits as this sander is 6"

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Metabo SXE 450 TurboTec 120-Volt 6 in. Dual Random Orbit Disc Sander There is two Metabo models! One is SXE 425 and next one up is SXE 450. This SXE 450 TurboTec the one I ordered is an excellent tool for your dry sanding of all flat and curved surfaces, wood, plastics, non-ferrous, speckled and painted surfaces, and is also suitable for polishing too. You can adjust SXC 450 for Setting Oscillating Frequency, Turbo Boost Switch, On/Off switch with continuous activation and comes with a Dust Extraction Filter. It is not to heavy too, like my old one is!! It built well!! I like it, and I will recommend it. Stay and play it safe.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent German two-handed 6" orbit disk sander When i think of power tools, Metabo is not a name that comes to mind. That's too bad, because their products are TOP NOTCH. Made in Germany, the precision engineering is immediate evident when you pick it up out of the box. This is not some cheap, plastic, will-work-for-just-one-job, made in China palm sander. It is SOLID. Heavy and well built, one can quite briskly surmise that this orbital sander will be a stand-out workhorse in your tool box. BUILD Nothing fits loosely on this sander. The buttons are perfectly placed and their depression is smooth as it should be. The rubber grip offers a comfortable hold. The balance of the sander is good; it is really made for two handed operation only. The front grip is necessary for use. This is much larger, sturdier and heavier than the average one handed palm sanders out there. It has a full 6" disk surface with the 6 corresponding holes to pull in the dust as you sand your surfaces. This keeps the sanding surface free from debris and allows you to spend more time doing what you need to do: sand. DISKS There are two types of disks available for sale: The stick-fast and the Hook & Lock. The first one is basically a sticker. The second, i have never had the pleasure of using, but i must say is simply ingenious. The surface of the sander is essentially a tiny velcro, with the backs of the disks made up of a very thin fabric-like surface. When the two stick together, you get a shockingly good adhesion. It is one that i'm not quite able to explain, actually. Yet the disks stay put, can peel off with minimal effort, and can be re-attached over and over again. Amazing inginuety. There is really only one negative in all of this. There were no disks included. I made a special trip to my local Home Depot just to buy the disks, and i must admit i was quite dissapointed by the selection. There were only 4 grits to chose from in the 6" Hook & Lock variety, with each one of them being a massive 10 pack costing $12. It would be nice if there were smaller packs of different grits, or even a variety pack. Shockingly, a quick visit to Home Depot's website shows ONLY the very same four 10-packs as available in store. Other websites have limited selection as well. It would be nice if these were more available. PERFORMANCE Performance of this random orbital sander was overwhelmingly enjoyable. The vibration of the motor is strong, but not excessive. The weight of the sander means that you don't really need to press hard on it to get a good sand at your chosen grit. All the buttons are easily accessible while it is running, and the trigger lock allows you to focus on what you're doing, and not worry about keeping it on. It is mobile enough that you can easily move it around corners to get your desired rounded edges. There was absolutely no "kick" to this sander as one would experience using a belt sander on either edge transitions or application to new surfaces. This allows for excellent control and outcome of the surface quality. As it runs, dust will still come out off the edges of the sander, as is expected. But the holes in the disk do their job, and suck in the dust from the middle of the disk through the filter. The filter is easy to remove, clean, and blow out, allowing it to be re-used almost indefinitely. SUMMARY An incredibly solid and well built sander. Two handed operation. 6" Hook & Lock sanding disks are amazing, but the selection at local stores, and on line, is limited. Good quality German engineering means that this orbital sander will last you a lifetime.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very flexible sanding tool for quick and fine work This is a very usable sanding tool with 2 different basic settings and speed control on top of those settings. One setting is a normal orbital setting which works as expected. The second setting is more of a back and forth type setting, which emulates what might be done using your hand sanding block. Each of these settings have their specific use, and you will probably switch back and forth on any one specific piece of work. The additional nice addition is that this tool has a dust catcher on the back. It catches significant amounts of dust but it will never catch all of the dust. I did not try it, but I am pretty sure I could attach a shop vac to the same fitting as the dust bag, and use a shop vac perhaps easily. Overall this is a very nice tool, and I certainly recommend it.
