I have a steel bridge and I want use this to sense vehicles on the bridge (exiting) and then open my Mighty Mule 502 gate opener. Will the steel bridge mess up the magnetic field detection?

Answer:
Yes. If the sensor is close to steel, it will make it less responsive. I would mount it on wood and fasten it with nylon cable fasteners found at Home Depot in the electrical dept. I would mount it on the side of the bridge about three feet high. Usually the steel in the bridge is less dense and the car passing through will be more easily detected.

Answer:
Hello Steve,
Thank you for taking the time to post your question, Due to the the vibrations caused by the bridge, you may experience false readings. I would recommended that you purchase our FM141, 150 foot wired vehicle exiting sensor and install the gate opening sensor before or after your bridge to ensure you wouldn't receive any false readings.

The wand needs a constant source of 12 volt DC power and draws 3 milli-amperes (0.003 of an ampere). The positive supply is the red wire and the negative side is the YELLOW wire with the bare braid wire connected also to the negative terminal. The black and blue wire in the cable is normally open contact of a relay built inside the wand. In most cases, the black wire goes to the, "common" terminal and the blue wire goes to the, "exit" terminal on the ACCESSORY terminal board. Sometimes I had to use the, "safety" terminal instead of the, "exit" terminal. A simple test of your operator before buying this product, is found on step 3, Wiring the Wand; "Verify the above inputs when shorted (a small wire connecting the 2 terminals) will do all of the following: 1. OPEN the gate if the gate is idle; 2. STOP and then OPEN the gate if the gate is CLOSING; 3. DO NOTHING if the gate is opening". Read Less

Rated 3.1 out of 5 by 8 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great if you did not get one as part of a kit. If you did not get one of these as part of a gate kit, it is a great option to get. I had bought a second one in addition to the one that came with the kit hoping one would open the gate when arriving and one would open the gate when exiting. This does not work with the Mighty Mule controller however. Two installed on the same system just causes the gate to open and close constantly. This only works as one unit per controller for the exit function. Other than that, it does work well, sensing cars and opening the gates. October 9, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Gate opening sensor I'm using this for a gate clearance sensor. When the oil or UPS delivery trucks leave, their rear ends of the trucks gets into the way of gate closing. I don't want to use photo beams due to snow storm interference. The sensor is two feet past the gate toward the highway. Since the gate controller is very close, I bought a steel electrical pull box at Home Depot and coiled the extra wire in it. Since the sensor is a hysteresis (magnetic) sensitivity device, I didn't want to cut the wire and affect it magnetically. Also the steel pull box will prevent the coil of wire inside from being affected by the sensor. I grounded the box and the negative side of the battery where the shield braid in the sensor cable is connected. This allows any electrical or galvanic currents to leak away. It has been working reliability. The gate closing time is held up until the truck is past the gate area. The sensor's black and blue wires are connected to, COM and SAFETY terminals on the FM500 gate controller. July 16, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Stopped Working for No Reason It worked very well for the first two months or so. Then late on a Sunday afternoon it stopped working. I thought it was something with the batteries or power to the gate itself. Its not any of those things. Ran a continuity test on the line to the sensor as well. Nothing wrong with it, other than it stopped working. I am going to have to dig it out and return it. We get by with the remotes now, but its nice to get in your car and back out without fumbling for the remote . . . . . . If you check this page, you will see a similar situation from March of this year. May 12, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Disappointed Installed it. Buried it and it does not work right. Opens gate all day long. About every 10 minutes. Trying to get mighty mule fate opener to replace it March 15, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by A mind of it's own! This thing has a mind of it's own! The gate will randomly open. I've tried several different things, including placing 2 ft underground...nothing works. September 30, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by good product Don't strip the wire. It is very thin. It does work well. I like that you don't have to keep a remote around. August 26, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by You won't be sorry! Love this product.. wish I had purchased it long before now! Take my advice, read the settings on the inside panel of your gate opener first about where to put it on the board. But once hooked up, it is one of my best purchases ever! October 7, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Works very well Easy to wire in, easy instructions, works great, no problems December 18, 2012
