Customer Questions & Answers

Can I mount this on a steel bridge?

I have a steel bridge and I want use this to sense vehicles on the bridge (exiting) and then open my Mighty Mule 502 gate opener. Will the steel bridge mess up the magnetic field detection?
Asked by: Steve
I mounted my sensor on my steel bridge and have had no problem. Before I mounted it, I did some tests with a temporary mount to see if I had any false openings. Everything checked out ok. The only false opening was when my neighbor wiggled the temporary post which has the same effect as moving metal.

Will a child's bicycle cause the gate to open?

Asked by: Jeff
Yes, if too close. I can get mine to open by moving a shovel blade directly over the top. However, when placed far enough from riding area it is not triggered by my kids bike or an adult bike. FYI, the one I received needed to be placed farther from the driveway to work properly, I have it about 4 feet from driveway edge and it works fine.

Will metal t post affect the wand
Asked by: hoss
The wand is only effected by moving metal objects. Just be sure to get the item placed and stationary before connecting AC or battery power.

I've buried, dug up, moved and tested this thing at least five times. Problem is that if it is too close it will begin to open the gate and then stop, and obviously if its too far from vehicle it will not open gate. I must say, part of the problem might be that have an older mule opener with the "green board" and it does not work the same as the newer units.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great unit Very convenient sensor. It opens my gate once you approach exit point depending how far you set it up. The first sensor that I received came out defective. It would send the command to the opener and the gate would open randomly any time of day. I ordered a new one and it is working great. I received credit for the the defective unit. Thank you home Depot for your great customer service. Highly recommended!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stopped Working for No Reason It worked very well for the first two months or so. Then late on a Sunday afternoon it stopped working. I thought it was something with the batteries or power to the gate itself. Its not any of those things. Ran a continuity test on the line to the sensor as well. Nothing wrong with it, other than it stopped working. I am going to have to dig it out and return it. We get by with the remotes now, but its nice to get in your car and back out without fumbling for the remote . . . . . . If you check this page, you will see a similar situation from March of this year.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great if you did not get one as part of a kit. If you did not get one of these as part of a gate kit, it is a great option to get. I had bought a second one in addition to the one that came with the kit hoping one would open the gate when arriving and one would open the gate when exiting. This does not work with the Mighty Mule controller however. Two installed on the same system just causes the gate to open and close constantly. This only works as one unit per controller for the exit function. Other than that, it does work well, sensing cars and opening the gates.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gate opening sensor I'm using this for a gate clearance sensor. When the oil or UPS delivery trucks leave, their rear ends of the trucks gets into the way of gate closing. I don't want to use photo beams due to snow storm interference. The sensor is two feet past the gate toward the highway. Since the gate controller is very close, I bought a steel electrical pull box at Home Depot and coiled the extra wire in it. Since the sensor is a hysteresis (magnetic) sensitivity device, I didn't want to cut the wire and affect it magnetically. Also the steel pull box will prevent the coil of wire inside from being affected by the sensor. I grounded the box and the negative side of the battery where the shield braid in the sensor cable is connected. This allows any electrical or galvanic currents to leak away. It has been working reliability. The gate closing time is held up until the truck is past the gate area. The sensor's black and blue wires are connected to, COM and SAFETY terminals on the FM500 gate controller.
