How come only 450 in-lbs torque when similar Milwaukee are making 1500 in-lbs?

How come only 450 in-lbs torque when similar Milwaukee are making 1500 in-lbs?
Asked by: kleecker
The 1500 lbs of the normal impact driver is peak torque. It is force from the impact to the hammer itself and is not sustained power. The hydraulic driver only has 450, but it is sustained. There are graphs showing the difference on the product page and milwaukee's site. Driving difference between the two is actually pretty similar. The sustained torque nearly makes up the difference. Here's a video demonstration: https://toolcraze.net/milwaukee-m18-fuel-surge-hydraulic-driver-video-review/ Almost negligible difference in power with less noise and less vibration.

Hi, does this come as a bare tool also? (Skin only)

Asked by: IronR
Yes. On Home Depot.com you can get the bare tool. It's easy to find by searching "Milwaukee Surge".

So the SURGE version is less Powerful than the fuel series?

Asked by: Toneloc
The Surge is part of the Fuel series. Because of its fluid drive, it creates torque differently than a standard impact. It will not near attain the peak torque of the standard Fuel impacts, but will sustain the max torque that is does generate for much longer. The trade-off for it being much quieter is less peak torque.

Other manufacturers are making driver extensions with extremely high-power magnets. I don't see any by Milwaukee. Can the electronics in this impact driver or the battery pack can be damaged by using these magnets? After a short length of time, I have decided this impact driver is the best (and quietest) I have ever used.
Asked by: ReadyToDrive
Magnets will not damage this driver or the batteries and I agree it is the quietest impact driver I've ever used too

M18 FUEL Surge 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless 1/4 in. Hex Hydraulic Impact Driver Kit is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 17.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I've been using this new Surge for a couple of weeks now, on the job as an electrical contractor,... I've been using this new Surge for a couple of weeks now, on the job as an electrical contractor, and I'm loving this impact. Substantially quieter than any other I own, or have ever encountered, yet with the power to get it done. No way to measure it, but I would certainly guess it to be the 50% quieter that Milwaukee claims. Fastening to and boring holes through framing members is my primary use for a 1/4" hex impact driver, so I took some time on the job site yesterday to record some results with some of the fasteners and bits I had handy. I compared the Surge's abilities to the M18 Fuel 2757-20 impact that I've been using since it came out. This is in new spruce, three 2x6's screwed together: Drywall screws: Surge had no problem with up to 4" drywall screws in this spruce. No problem with even a 6", but they are not threaded the entire length, so not sure it would tax it any more than a 4". Self-feeding spade: Surge did a 1/2" with no problem, but went out on overload with an 11/16". The 2757 would do a 1-1/8" - the largest I had - no problem, and with speed. SpeedBor: Surge would do 5/8" no problem, but it would go out on overload when I tried 3/4". The 2757 would do 1" - the largest I had - no problem, with speed. Mode 4 is designed for driving self-tapping screws. All I had handy were some #10x1" Tek screws, so I tried driving those through a 4" square blank cover, which is about 1/16" thick steel. With the trigger wide-open, no feathering, it drove them no problem, without any skating at all. Driving lags is something I do with an impact wrench, not a 1/4" driver, but I had a 3/8"x3" one handy, so I figured I'd try it for this review. With no pilot hole drilled, the Surge would go out on overload when in mode 3 about half the times I tried it. In mode 2, no problem. As you can see, the Surge will handle most fastening applications that a standard impact driver will, while being much quieter. It does not develop near the peak torque that a standard one does, so I do not recommend it for boring holes larger than 1/2" in wood. Surge will be taking over all of my fastening needs, that's for certain. I hope this helps some of you at least somewhat with your purchasing decisions. I switched over to Milwaukee's cordless when the Fuel stuff first started becoming available. I use the tools professionally, and some of them daily - even all day - and have not had one problem with a single one of them. Outstanding tool!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Truly amazing driver--so much quieter and much less vibration True story: The first time I used this hydraulic impact driver, I thought it might be broken. It was so quiet that I thought the internal impact hammer was slipping. It wasn't vibrating or jumping around like my old impact driver, and I wasn't wincing with pain from the noise. I had to actually watch the screw that I was driving to see if it was even turning. Sure enough, the screw was definitely moving, but this driver is so quiet and so smooth compared to what I was used to that I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I can't think of a tool that I've used in the last several years that is as revolutionary as this hydraulic impact driver--I'm not exaggerating. This is really a game changer for what is probably one of the most commonly used cordless tools these days. If you've ever used an impact driver indoors, particularly in a small space like a bathroom or closet, you know that the noise can make your teeth rattle. And I've had several situations where the vibration from the older style impact driver has caused me to either pull the trigger too much, or caused the bit to jump off the screw head and stab the wall or wood that I'm working on. This driver solves the noise and vibration issues--it's very real and not marketing hype. And a really great feature on this model is the 3 speed button. I love the slow "1" speed, which lets me have extra control when driving screws--you can more easily feather the trigger and adjust the speed. I recently replaced a few smoke detectors in my house and used the cheap drywall anchors to install them on the ceiling. I was able to use this Milwaukee driver to drive the screws for the base of the smoke alarm with precision. I had the driver set on the lowest speed, and I could control even the slightest turn of the screw. It was impressive. This Milwaukee SURGE driver is a game changer. It's so quiet and so smooth that I am pretty sure I will have a very hard time using my old impact driver. I will be reaching for the Milwaukee every time. If you regularly use an impact driver, I highly recommend trying one of these new hydraulic models--it is a huge improvement. The only minor downside to this particular kit with the 5.0 Ah batteries is that the larger batteries are a bit bulky for this very compact and light weight driver and make it a bit unbalanced. If you don't need the long runtime of the 5.0 batteries, I would recommend the kit with the smaller 2.0 batteries, which should provide better balance when using the tool. But if you are using the driver constantly for hours each day, then the larger batteries in this kit should be great.

This impact is flat out awesome, plenty of power, smooth as could be, quiet and I completed a very large job using it without the battery ever showing it was getting low. I've told several of my friends about it already and I'm excited to see what else Milwaukee can come up with using this same set up.

It is quiet, easy to control and easy on batteries. I have used it to drive 4 inch x 5/16 inch lag screws into pressure treat without any problems. This is probably not the impact driver for loosening rusted lug nuts but for all my lumber fastening jobs it is perfect. The speeds are easy to control although I wish it had 1,000 1,500 and 2,000 rpm options instead of 1, 2, and 3,000 rpm speeds. I have driven probably 3,000 screws of varying sizes and lengths. It drives them quickly without stripping heads. It is nice to be able to carry on a conversation around the work site while using this driver. This quickly became my favorite tool. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Very Well! I've been using this impact driver for various jobs around the house and haven't had any issues with this product. I've used it to install lag bolts, build a swing set, and varios other DYI projects. with the hydraulic feature on this it diminishes the noise that comes from the impact driver, so it is not as loud as others I have owned or used. This also has a light under the driver housing that helps when working in hard to reach places. This driver came in a case with charger as well as two batteries. These batteries charge fairly quickly and this kit came with two batteries. the spare battery tends to charge faster than I can use the battery on the driver, so I haven't had to stop a project and wait for a battery.

They're much quieter than a traditional impact driver and they sink screws faster, too. I'd highly recommend this for anyone who regularly sinks wood screws (I was doing #8x3"). The Surge is incredibly compact, too, even shorter than Milwaukee's 2nd gen Fuel impact driver, the 2753-20. I will say these are not much good for bolts. I was attempting to loosen a stubborn fastener and the Surge just stops - - seemingly if it detects no movement after a couple seconds. I do not know how it performs on lag screws as I have not tried it yet. I have included a photo of how the Surge is even a little shorter than Milwaukee's 2753 impact driver which is already very compact by any standard. Surge LEFT

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible - Incredible - Incredible One of the best tools ever! How in the world did they design this? The control is simply outstanding! You can install screws in drywall with this with the finesse to not tear through the paper, or drive a screw in wood as deep as your bit will allow. I have another Milwaukee impact driver of basic function I love. This impact driver however is something words cannot describe period! Never - Never - have I had one company anywhere I have become so fond of for tools, and this impact driver is one of the reasons why. When I added this surge impact driver in conjunction with my other impact driver, I feel there is no project I can't tackle. I am quite honestly in disbelief as to the precision control and extreme power of this Milwaukee impact driver! Incredible beyond words. needed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Tool This is another handy driver from Milwaukee. It is plenty powerful, and works well on small to medium fasteners. It takes standard 1/4" hex tool bits and adapters. It has a handy LED light to illuminate your work area. The hydraulic drive makes it quieter and smoother. It has a 4 mode drive control that lets you set the tool for specific tasks. Comes with charger and 2 batteries in a durable carry case. The M18 Fuel series are the best cordless tools on the market now, in my opinion.
