How come only 450 in-lbs torque when similar Milwaukee are making 1500 in-lbs?

How come only 450 in-lbs torque when similar Milwaukee are making 1500 in-lbs?
Asked by: kleecker
This is because this impact driver is hydraulic and not mechanical like the 1800 inch pounds on the model 2753-20. I have this unit and it is more for smaller screws/bolts. I can use this to put on wall plate screws for electrical outlets without any issue. This is also much quieter than the mechanical impact mentioned above. Easier on the ears by far, rating at 76 dBa driving a #10 3.5" screw into pressure treated lumber. This is great for when you are needing to use it for a long period of time doing finish work, even putting in decking. The torque curve on this is shorter high but it is sustained 450 inch pounds for a longer peak output verses the 1800 inch pounds that is for a split second.

Other manufacturers are making driver extensions with extremely high-power magnets. I don't see any by Milwaukee. Can the electronics in this impact driver or the battery pack can be damaged by using these magnets? After a short length of time, I have decided this impact driver is the best (and quietest) I have ever used.
Asked by: ReadyToDrive
Milwaukee's extensions are amplified rare earth magnets. They are very strong and extend through the bit you insert into the extension. These magnets will not adversely effect the electronics in the batteries or in the tools themselves. I have these and they are better than any other extension I have tried. The lock in bit extensions are not magnetic, but they do lock the bit in and hold them very well. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-12-in-Shockwave-Magnetic-Bit-Holder-48-32-4512/203820394 http://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-6-in-Shockwave-Magnetic-Bit-Holder-48-32-4511/203820391 http://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-Shockwave-Compact-Magnetic-Bit-Tip-Holder-48-32-4502/202653626 http://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-Shockwave-3-in-Magnetic-Bit-Holder-48-32-4503/203114937

This impact is flat out awesome, plenty of power, smooth as could be, quiet and I completed a very large job using it without the battery ever showing it was getting low. I've told several of my friends about it already and I'm excited to see what else Milwaukee can come up with using this same set up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I've been using this new Surge for a couple of weeks now, on the job as an electrical contractor,... I've been using this new Surge for a couple of weeks now, on the job as an electrical contractor, and I'm loving this impact. Substantially quieter than any other I own, or have ever encountered, yet with the power to get it done. No way to measure it, but I would certainly guess it to be the 50% quieter that Milwaukee claims. Fastening to and boring holes through framing members is my primary use for a 1/4" hex impact driver, so I took some time on the job site yesterday to record some results with some of the fasteners and bits I had handy. I compared the Surge's abilities to the M18 Fuel 2757-20 impact that I've been using since it came out. This is in new spruce, three 2x6's screwed together: Drywall screws: Surge had no problem with up to 4" drywall screws in this spruce. No problem with even a 6", but they are not threaded the entire length, so not sure it would tax it any more than a 4". Self-feeding spade: Surge did a 1/2" with no problem, but went out on overload with an 11/16". The 2757 would do a 1-1/8" - the largest I had - no problem, and with speed. SpeedBor: Surge would do 5/8" no problem, but it would go out on overload when I tried 3/4". The 2757 would do 1" - the largest I had - no problem, with speed. Mode 4 is designed for driving self-tapping screws. All I had handy were some #10x1" Tek screws, so I tried driving those through a 4" square blank cover, which is about 1/16" thick steel. With the trigger wide-open, no feathering, it drove them no problem, without any skating at all. Driving lags is something I do with an impact wrench, not a 1/4" driver, but I had a 3/8"x3" one handy, so I figured I'd try it for this review. With no pilot hole drilled, the Surge would go out on overload when in mode 3 about half the times I tried it. In mode 2, no problem. As you can see, the Surge will handle most fastening applications that a standard impact driver will, while being much quieter. It does not develop near the peak torque that a standard one does, so I do not recommend it for boring holes larger than 1/2" in wood. Surge will be taking over all of my fastening needs, that's for certain. I hope this helps some of you at least somewhat with your purchasing decisions. I switched over to Milwaukee's cordless when the Fuel stuff first started becoming available. I use the tools professionally, and some of them daily - even all day - and have not had one problem with a single one of them. Outstanding tool!

They're much quieter than a traditional impact driver and they sink screws faster, too. I'd highly recommend this for anyone who regularly sinks wood screws (I was doing #8x3"). The Surge is incredibly compact, too, even shorter than Milwaukee's 2nd gen Fuel impact driver, the 2753-20. I will say these are not much good for bolts. I was attempting to loosen a stubborn fastener and the Surge just stops - - seemingly if it detects no movement after a couple seconds. I do not know how it performs on lag screws as I have not tried it yet. I have included a photo of how the Surge is even a little shorter than Milwaukee's 2753 impact driver which is already very compact by any standard. Surge LEFT

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Tool This is another handy driver from Milwaukee. It is plenty powerful, and works well on small to medium fasteners. It takes standard 1/4" hex tool bits and adapters. It has a handy LED light to illuminate your work area. The hydraulic drive makes it quieter and smoother. It has a 4 mode drive control that lets you set the tool for specific tasks. Comes with charger and 2 batteries in a durable carry case. The M18 Fuel series are the best cordless tools on the market now, in my opinion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's More Than An "Impact Driver" Don't let the word "Impact Driver" fool you. I find myself using this tool more and more. I have an 18 volt drill driver , not that I don't like it but every time I set it down it wants to fall over. The first thing that I noticed was that it is sleek and compact and it doesn't fall over when set down and it has a belt clip. Next is the fact that it comes with two XC 5 amp hour batteries. The standard XC is 3 amp hour so your already upgraded to, two high capacity batteries. I f you really need high demand look at the 9 amp hour. With the on board light, and the fact it stays on apprx. 10 seconds after releasing the trigger you will wonder how you lived without this feature. And the charger, there not cheap in there own right, but this will charge all M12 and M18 batteries. Now of course it does have it's limitations, so check the specs. How about 4 drive control settings to adjust output speed and power. My first experience seeing this tool was when I was helping a friend reinstall composite decking, he had this tool and I had my 18 volt drill driver, he was out driving me two to one. You owe it to yourself to look at this fine design of a tool.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I never thought I would use a power tool to install wall plate screws....until now. Yet another fantastic product by Milwaukee. The only issue I have with this was it took over 2 months to receive it from online purchasing (it came directly from Milwaukee). That was the only frustrating part. I have never used a power tool of any voltage to install wall plate screws for outlet covers. After waiting so long to finally receive this product I have read/watched many reviews on this tool. All the reviews and mine are positive. I agree that this is not your typical impact driver. The power is down drastically from Milwaukee's other 1/4" hex head impact, but its due to many factors. This drill uses hydraulics for its impacts. It is unbelievably quiet compared to other impact drills that are typically mechanical impact tools. This is the first drill I have ever used to install wall plate screws for my low voltage installations I do professionally. On setting 1, with a flat head bit it did not once slip from the flat head screw. It is a low torque so it didn't even over tighten the screw and shatter a breakable plate cover. On setting 3, it did not over tighten a 1/2" screw going into the under side of a finished credenza (it didn't poke through the finish on the outside). The self tapping screw setting is ingenious, it works like a charm! The head of this unit is smaller than a mechanical impact, so it looks a bit odd, especially when being used with the larger batteries. Was it worth the 2+ month wait??? DEFINITELY!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Truly amazing driver--so much quieter and much less vibration True story: The first time I used this hydraulic impact driver, I thought it might be broken. It was so quiet that I thought the internal impact hammer was slipping. It wasn't vibrating or jumping around like my old impact driver, and I wasn't wincing with pain from the noise. I had to actually watch the screw that I was driving to see if it was even turning. Sure enough, the screw was definitely moving, but this driver is so quiet and so smooth compared to what I was used to that I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I can't think of a tool that I've used in the last several years that is as revolutionary as this hydraulic impact driver--I'm not exaggerating. This is really a game changer for what is probably one of the most commonly used cordless tools these days. If you've ever used an impact driver indoors, particularly in a small space like a bathroom or closet, you know that the noise can make your teeth rattle. And I've had several situations where the vibration from the older style impact driver has caused me to either pull the trigger too much, or caused the bit to jump off the screw head and stab the wall or wood that I'm working on. This driver solves the noise and vibration issues--it's very real and not marketing hype. And a really great feature on this model is the 3 speed button. I love the slow "1" speed, which lets me have extra control when driving screws--you can more easily feather the trigger and adjust the speed. I recently replaced a few smoke detectors in my house and used the cheap drywall anchors to install them on the ceiling. I was able to use this Milwaukee driver to drive the screws for the base of the smoke alarm with precision. I had the driver set on the lowest speed, and I could control even the slightest turn of the screw. It was impressive. This Milwaukee SURGE driver is a game changer. It's so quiet and so smooth that I am pretty sure I will have a very hard time using my old impact driver. I will be reaching for the Milwaukee every time. If you regularly use an impact driver, I highly recommend trying one of these new hydraulic models--it is a huge improvement. The only minor downside to this particular kit with the 5.0 Ah batteries is that the larger batteries are a bit bulky for this very compact and light weight driver and make it a bit unbalanced. If you don't need the long runtime of the 5.0 batteries, I would recommend the kit with the smaller 2.0 batteries, which should provide better balance when using the tool. But if you are using the driver constantly for hours each day, then the larger batteries in this kit should be great.
