Customer Questions & Answers

Can the transformer be plugged into an outside outlet and be operated by a light switch in the house?

obviously the outside outlet is controlled by the light switch I will use
Asked by: Anthony
I don't see why not. I have plugged my transformer into the wall, and if I had a wall switch in place, I could interrupt the normal operation of this unit by flipping the switch. Please note, that the wall switch will not operate to turn the lights on, unless it is ALSO dark outside, because the photo-sensor must sense darkness before the transformer will activate the lights. I suppose you could defeat this limitation, by placing black tape over the sensor lens if you wanted to convert this to a manually operated transformer (manually operated by your wall switch).

I need this units exact size. The information here and elsewhere differs.

If it's Height x width is 12.2 x 7.5 as shown here I can't use it. But another source said it is 9 x 5 inches, this will work.
Asked by: Tinker
The top cover is slightly larger than the housing. At its largest dimensions, I measure 5" W x 9-1/4" H x 5-1/8" D

Can the unit operate just on a timer, and not the photo cell?

I am replacing an existing unit with a timer that is plugged in my garage, so I don't need the photo cell.
Asked by: Will
The instruction manual says it can, although I have not tried this.

can i attach 3 sets of wires to this unit.

i now have 3 transformers and trying to get rid of having 3 separate transformers so would like to apply this unit to take the place of having 3 can all wires be attached
Asked by: blondie
Physical space is limited for connecting wire to the unit, I was able to splice the wires for 2 circuits (4 wires total), together, to connect to this transformer. It was a bulky connection (and I don't think I could have added a third circuit), but it worked -- whether you can connect more wires will depend on the wire gauge, and of course, the unit should not be wired to exceed the recommended service voltage.

Low-Voltage 300-Watt Power Pack Black Outdoor Lighting with Light Sensor and Metal Raintight Case is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disapppointing You cannot program this product to turn on and off at a specific time. The Malibu products all had that feature. It also has this obnoxious red number that is visible at all times.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Transformer I've used I wish this digital controller had been on the market years ago. After having two mechanical controllers fail in ten years, I hope and pray this is the last one I need. I love the ease of operation, the built in photo cell, and the fully sealed case.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works Well With Minor Exception I just installed this transformer to replace another brand that had lasted me 4 years. I like that it is a heavy duty metal case, and if I was installing it outdoors, the weather protection provided by the lid would be a nice feature too. I have placed my power unit inside my garage, so weather is not a factor. Two concerns for me: 1. There is only a single wire connection. My older unit had two which were convenient for wiring two separate circuits -- not a big deal, but I had to join two large gauge wires together making for a bulky connection. 2. The photo-optic sensor is built into the case. This will probably work well if the unit is mounted outdoors with good exposure to the sun (i.e., not blocked by vegetation or buildings, or exposed to artificial light). If does not have a good mounting location, the automatic operation may be compromised -- for example, in my situation where the unit is mounted in the garage, whenever I open my garage door the garage light automatically comes on, which in turn operates this transformer sensor to turn off the outdoor low voltage lighting. When the garage light delay turns the garage lights off, the outdoor lighting comes back on. My old transformer had a remote sensor (connected by wire), that allowed for placement of the sensor within several feet of the transformer. I had placed the remote sensor in the window, eliminating this problem. Otherwise the unit works well, and has plenty of options available for lighting (i.e., automatic dusk to dawn, dusk for a specified number of hours, etc.)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product and no problems Easy replacement for my Malibu Intermatic transformer whose timer failed after 15 years. I just had to add a second mounting hole and screw anchor in the exterior wall stucco since this unit hangs from two screws while the other just used one. Set it for photocell operation with the number of hours desired for it to stay on, and it has worked just fine in the month that it has been in service. My old unit was hard-wired, so I re-used the existing installed Malibu power cord and put a high quality AC in-line cable receptacle on the end that had gone into the Malibu unit in order not to modify the Moonrays cable end. Cutting off the plug to hard-wire it would have voided the warranty. All the AC cabling was tie-wrapped tightly together and then tucked neatly in the recess at the bottom of the unit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Choice to Upgrade Landscape Lighting The Moonrays 300W transformer is less expensive than Malibu's and allows setting OFF time in one hour increments (rather than the two hour steps on the150 W Malibu unit which came in a package deal). Installation was obvious and easy. The only negative is that the photocell works better than the (150 W) Malibu unit so had to be mounted in the shadow of a carriage light.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much Better Than Intermatic Easy to install, Easy to set the timer, and lights are brighter. Price was lower at Home Depot than at Lowes or Menards. I had some stray loose screws and nuts fall out of the steel housing, but it did not affect performance so far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from As Advertised Easy to install, solid, and appears well-designed.
