Customer Questions & Answers

heating only feature

Can the nest be used for heating only? Also the hard wired carbon monoxide and smoke detector alerts you when something detected wifi
Asked by: Curious
Yes it will control heating only. The CO and Smoke sensors will communicate with the thermostat to turn off the furnace automatically if CO or smoke is detected, assuming of course that the thermostat is still working properly. Mine needs to be factory reset a few times of year to do what NEST claims it is supposed to do.

Main breaker, do I need to switch off power during installation?
Asked by: kaybee
Not the main breaker itself, but yes for the breaker that controls the furnace.

Is this unit wireless? E.g. I want to be able to move the thermostat from one room to another.
Asked by: James
The unit is wireless that is it has a wireless interface and reporting. However, it is connected to your furnace controls which are usually hard wired. Does this help?

If you have a 2 wire heating system, which is common with older homes with forced hot air, it can cause your furnace to malfunction. The issue is that it the Nest needs to draw power from 2 (W1 and Rh), it only does it when the heat is on. It caused my furnace to click constantly like it was getting a intermittent signal. It would get the fan going and the furnace heat going but the heat/gas would cut out and then just blow cold air. What a shame. I hope this did not damage my furnace. I really loved the interface, the look and the IOS app. What I need is a C wire to power the Nest separately. This is going back and I am going with a cheap Honeywell.

I have 2 adult children who are in and out at different times of the day (and night) and I was worried about the Nest learning what my desired schedule actually is. Once I realized I could control it from the app on my phone, I decided to purchase it. Now I'm glad I did. It has learned my schedule and hasn't been affected by my children's' schedule.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to install. Doesn't require a C wire. But Pricey. If the price had been lower, I would have rated this 5 stars. The only reason I chose this model over a Honeywell product is that this does not require a C (common) wire and Honeywell does. Some thermostats have 5 wires, but mine only has 4. It's a good solid product. Very easy to install, even for a girl. ;) Good written instructions. I watched the install video before I purchased the product, so I knew what I was up against. Made it super easy to install. Quality product. Well made. Only downside is the $249 price tag at Home Depot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WANT THE BEST, GET THE NEST I love this system. I had a working thermostat, but was researching for the last year or so on upgrading to the NEST system. It automatically programs itself based on how you adjust the temp for a period of time. it also connects with other nest products like the nest smoke/carbon dioxide alarm to combine things the system can do, like shutting off the heater if your carbon dioxide detector goes off. it used the motion detectors on the smoke alarms to see if your home or not and adjusts your thermostat automatically to save money since your not home. I can see how this unit pays for itself within a couple of years

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best AND easiest thermostat available There are hardly enough words to describe how good this thermostat is. As a builder, I purchase and install many controllers year after year. I've gotten to the point that I don't even bother with the others on the market, this Nest is exclusively what I use on all projects. Doesn't matter how big or small the system. Even if there isn't Wi-Fi in the building, the Nest simply is the best built and most intuitive to use. Of course it is sophisticated and technical enough to handle any and all HVAC equipment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Device We already were Nest customers, and needed to decide on whether to upgrade or replace our current remote access thermostats system. I called Nest and spoke to someone there to insure that it would work with our boiler baseboard radiator system and they assured me it would. Of course it works great and now we are able to monitor our vacation home's temperatures (two zones) just as easily as the Nest camera and smoke detectors. This provides us peace of mind for our vacation home.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from <3 Nest I installed the thermostat myself and was SHOCKED to find out how much my AC was running. The Nest provides me with great information and I'm (second month in) starting to see a difference in consumption versus this time last year. It may take a year or two to pay for itself but I definitely think it's worth the money, although pricey for a thermostat. My favorite feature is locking the low and high temperatures so that I don't come home and find someone has turned the AC down to 70!

This was the only WiFi enabled thermostat that I could find that didn't require a common wire (C). It was very easy to install and set up, and works perfectly. I installed it my vacation house, and am able to control the thermostat remotely. I did have to turn off the Auto Schedule feature, as I didn't want it creating a schedule to control the heat when no one is there. But that was easy to do, as well.
