Can the trellis stand alone not against a wall? Should it be anchored with cement?

Example: I have looked at the manual and can't figure out what I did wrong.
Asked by: Lysa
Does not stand alone. Could be anchored with cement, but we dug deep in ground and packed the dirt around the uprights. It's very stable.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent trellis, but needs to be more ridgid This is a decent trellis, but at $170 it's kid of expensive. It must be fully assembled, but the 5-step directions are simple and I put it together in 15 minutes; even the screws are included. I did not attach this trellis to the house. I mounted it as a free standing trellis to help conceal an AC unit and well pump. I sunk each post in a 20-inch hole, secured with a 50-lb bag of cement and crushed stone. The base is well secured, but the trellis is tall and I can easily make it sway. The material is PVC/Vinyl but it should be more rigid to minimize swaying.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Even better than expected I bought this trellis to use freestanding on the side of my porch and plan to have a climbing rose grow on it. I was hesitant to purchase a trellis because I wanted the authentic look of a handmade wooden one. This looks very nice, and was much more affordable than wood and certainly easier to put together. I highly recommend this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from High quality, lightweight, wobbly Pros: Nice looking, high quality materials, hardware included, light weight, low wind resistance, won't rot or rust Cons: Easier for 2 people to assemble. The two included foundation pieces for a freestanding application fit firmly 22" in the ground, but don't fit far enough (only 8") up into the 8' trellis to ensure a firm stance. Despite adding more screws to attach the foundation legs to the trellis, I may end up installing a 6' cedar post or similar behind the middle of the trellis and attach to it with screws for stability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Durable Trellis that won't burn plants We got this trellis to add a little privacy to our patio. It was easy to put together and since not made of metal, shouldn't burn our plants when temperatures rise into the 100s. Also should be more durable than wood. Our only issue is figuring out the best way to install in the ground as being in Texas there's alot of rock down there -- we didn't think of that ahead of time, but I'm sure we can find someone who can help with that piece. I think it looks nice and have added some solar string lights to take it up a notch. Would recommend this to others.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Trellis The trellis was exactly what we needed to finish off the entrance to our house. The bougainvillea is going to love it.
