Product Overview

Nupla has been an innovator for over 70 years in the development of fiberglass technologies and has earned the reputation as the industry standard for fiberglass striking, cutting, digging, and fire tools. Nupla handles are unaffected by sub zero temperatures, do not conduct heat or cold and are impervious to industrial chemicals. Nupla handles are also non-conductive and have a built in dielectric safety feature since Lifetime Nuplaglas is one of the finest insulators available. The 27 in. Heavy Duty Drain Spade handle is solid pultruded fiberglass made with thousands of fiberglass strands and a unique resin making it super strong and resistant to weather, chemicals and insects (unlike most wooden handles). The Shovel can be used for house and road construction, farming, landscaping, utilities, and any other heavy duty application requiring concerted use of force.

Rated 4.0 out of 5 by 2 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Incomplete Review 1) Incomplete because I've had it only one day and have not put it to any meaningful test. THD is after me to review, so here goes--one more thing off my list. 2) My definition of "solid shank" differs from what I am seeing. There is a distinct & obvious seam on the back of the "Made in India" upper, round, female (don't freak out on me, now; that's a plumbing term) portion of the metal shovel, into which the handle is inserted & riveted. It could be spot-welded in places and appears to be fairly well secured together, but it is not a solid--as in seamlessly cast--tube. A saving grace is the circular metal grommet that helps secure the metal seam together at the "top", as well as hold the yellow "plastic" (Nupla has a proprietary name for it) handle securely within the metal working end of the shovel. BTW: as pictured on THD website, there is only one rivet through the handle, although there are two additional holes that could accommodate a second rivet some 2-1/2" below the first. Impossible to tell how far into the shank the yellow handle extends, but at least some five inches. There is no slack, wiggle-room, movement of the handle. Likely the single rivet will suffice to keep handle & blade functioning as one unit, which is the most important consideration, especially when using the shovel to pry up/out rocks encountered when trenching. 3) the metal blade will not be confused with a Mercedes bumper, but while having some rough peening/tooling marks, is heavy with a solid feel to it. With several other shovels, I have been able to bend/flex the blade at midpoint when attempting to pry up and remove heavy mud from what will be the trench. This blade appears very resistant to flexing, and well suited for leveraging. The point/edge of the shovel looks capable of repeatedly doing a good job. Any tool can be broken. Short of gross abuse, this drain spade should not disappoint. Splitting hairs a bit: 4.5 out of 5.0 would be my rating. To be clear: my value rating does not mean the shovel is average....for $55 + tax, I want a very good shovel. I feel this is a better shovel than a $30 Craftsman (Sears didn't have one) or similarly priced wood-handled Union. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Quslity tool. I actually purchased this to do planting in and around the garden. It works great and is a very well made tool. I would buy this brand and quality again. April 29, 2014
