Product Overview

Easily grown, shrubby plant that will grow to 3 ft. tall by mid-spring, when it produces very large, very fragrant, rose-pink, double flowers. Glossy green, lance-shaped leaves remain throughout summer and early fall, then dies to ground after frost. May need support because hard rains can cause them to arch to the ground. Plant in full sun to partial shade in organically rich, well drained soil. Remove spent flowers after blooming. Cut foliage to ground and remove from garden in fall after frost. Plants are long-lived, do not need to be divided, and can be left undisturbed for years. Used as a staple in the perennial border, as a specimen, in mass, as a hedge along fences, sidewalks, and driveways. We're sorry, but due to state regulations, this plant cannot be shipped to Mississippi.

Customer Questions & Answers

Our buds are small and dark- not opening we don't see ants. Too much water? Not enough?

Asked by: Barb
Hello, Barb. 1. The Peony may need more sunlight. It may get enough sun in early spring to form buds, yet be too shaded to form blooms later in spring. 2. Planting too deeply can cause buds to die because the plant cannot uptake the soil nutrients. Its tubers should be just above soil level. 3. Peonies need cold weather to set bud and flower. Perhaps, the plant receives enough cold to set bud but the cold spell is not long enough for blooms to form.

Asked by: CLAIRE21
Hello. Peony plants are thought to deliberately attract ants by a sweet nectar secreted specifically for the ants to assist the buds to open into flowers. They do not harm the plant and will leave once the flowers have all opened. It is not recommended to use an insecticide on the plants as this is a natural and normal activity.

Is this prudent to plant in zone 9

Asked by: Cincy
Thank you for your inquiry. Sara Bernhardt Peony is hardy to Zone 8. For blooms to develop, the peony needs approximately 30 days of below freezing temperature in winter. In Zone 9, special attention, such as digging up bulbs in fall and keeping them in a freezer during winter before replanting outside in spring, would be needed, with no guaranteed prolific bloom period. Roots would also need to be cool during the hot summer.

2 gal. Sara Bernhardt Peony Plant is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The peonies arrived in excellent condition I had been looking for a long time online for Peony plants everywhere wanted to offer roots and you make them grow yourself which I was very skeptical because I live in the south so finally found some plants actual plants on Home When they arrived they were very well packaged. The root ball was wrapped in newspaper,it still was nice and moist and there were even new shoots coming up from the root ball. It took me a few days to get them in the ground so I kept them in the house where they were in the AC but now they've been in the ground for about three weeks and they're doing beautifully

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice, Healthy, Growing Plants These peonies were packaged extremely well and arrived in such good condition with huge balls of dirt on them. It was so easy to plant them and they began growing right away. They are going to be just beautiful, I can tell! Thank you, Home Depot!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Most Stunning Flower When I ordered 3 of these I was very uptight about the expense for each due to the fact that all I was getting were bare root plants. When I opened them they were all in very healthy, excellent condition. I planted them right away and within days they were all shooting up. Its been numerous weeks since then and they are all performing beautifully. Since it will take this plant numerous months to reach maturity I can not report on the plants flowers yet but I am expecting beautiful blooms based on the plants performance thus far. Obviously these bare root plants came from a high quality vendor. I just wish they were not so expensive. Since I live in an area not native for this plant I am taking a big risk trying to grow Peonies here but I love Peonies so much that I am taking the risk. They were my Mother's favorite flower and if I am successful with them they will bring me years of enjoyment. I definately would recomment this flower due to Home Depot's chosen vendors integrity and quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from healthy and beautiful First time ordering a plant through mail order. When I opened the box, I was pleasantly surprised to see a healthy, bushy peony plant--and it even had a large bloom at the top. The root ball was carefully wrapped. Easy to transplant. Three weeks later it still looks very healthy (though the winds on my New York City balcony have proven too much for the bloom. Time will tell.)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Peony This plant came with one flower on it. After planting it it struggled and died. Next time I am ordering the bulb only. The shock of planting in the new ground was too much for the plant. The bulb that I order seems to be flourishing

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Peony took a plunge I purchased 2 of the 2 gal peonies. We just got our first bloom from the one plant. However, the second one is 1/2 the size of the other (they both came in at same stage we thought) and started to bud, but 2 days into the budding process it died. It never got beyond that. All in all I'm glad we have one that's doing something, but they're not inexpensive plants to purchase and looks like only 1 is going to make it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from No TLC!!! The plant was in poor condition. The soil was dry and it looked like the Christmas tree from Charlie Brown. $32.99 down the drain. Purchased a healthy, bushy plant (same exact one) for $16.99 at the West Roxbury, MA location.
