Product Overview

An ornamental, Japanese cherry tree with glossy red bark and red tinted, green foliage. Showy, pinkish white flowers in spring bloom in large clumps along the branches, covering the tree in color. Unlike other Cherry trees, the 'Kwanzan begins to grow leaves while it is still in bloom. The tree has been planted along with the 'Yoshino cultivar in Washington, DC for the annual cherry blossom festival.
  • Red blushed, green leaves turn yellowy orange in autumn
  • Unusual flowers are much larger than other cherry varieties
  • Tree is often wider than it is tall
  • A fruitless variety that does not attract wildlife
  • Tree is grown in and ships in a 5 gal. pot and is approximately 4 ft. - 5 ft. tall after planting in ground
  • We're sorry, due to state or federal regulations, this plant cannot be shipped to Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, South Carolina, Utah and Washington
  • May ship in a dormant state, with bare branches and no leaves, especially in early spring when plant has been pruned back to promote lateral branching
  • To accommodate mature size or when planting in groups, space 20 ft. away from other plants or structures
  • Performs best in plant growing zones 4 to 8, when grown in other zones, special care will be necessary

will this tree do well in coastal central florida

Asked by: Pat
I believe the tree would grow but I don't think you would get much in the way of blooms. It takes colder weather to encourage blooming.

Grow in South Florida?

I live in south Florida near Palm Beach. Does this tree do well with the tropical, hot, sunny climate down here? I have not seen this tree down here at all really so I am not sure if it does well in this type of climate.
Asked by: Becca
Hello, Becca. The 'Kwanzan cherry needs cooler weather to produce its beautiful blooms. The tree will not thrive in Southen Florida.

Customer Reviews

5 gal. 5 ft. Kwanzan Cherry Tree is rated 3.2 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Very Disappointed The tree was packaged very well and it didn't take too long to receive it. However, appx. 60% of the leaves had severe insect damage, probably from beetles or aphids. I don't know which nursery Home Depot gets these Kwanzan Cherry trees from but whoever runs it apparently hasn't heard of insecticide and doesn't particularly care about the quality of their trees. There's no excuse for this. I'm considering returning it for a replacement. I simply don't know whether or not it will be worth the trouble.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Cheaper and better one at the store I bought four of the kwanzan cherry tree online in May as I didn't see any in the Home Depot stores. Four were shipped in decent condition but the trees looked a little distressed, rightfully so after the transit. We planted the four trees following the instructions. Two of the tress did fine, one was not growing with the pace of the two healthy ones (remained really small) and the fourth just didn't make it and died. So we returned the dead tree and purchased another one online. In late August, I went to the home depot store to do our normal shopping and accidentally found the Kwanzan Cherry Tree for the fraction of the price vs online and in strong healthy condition. I couldn't believe they were selling for $19.99. Please note, the online trees have 90 day return policy, If I had known this was the case, I would of never bought the trees from online. Check your home depot stores first and wait until it is in stock and buy it at the store. You'll be glad you did.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do Not Buy! I recieved a very poor quality tree. Sure it arrived fast but it was definitely damaged in transit, i dare not say home depot would send me a bare root tree. Left with 3" of loose dry dirt and some mangley looking roots. The leaves were dying but since have dried to a crisp and i fear the tree may not make it. Take your money elsewhere.
