We purchased two varieties of rye grass seed this year for use in two different areas of our property; a perennial rye from another grass seed grower/ distributor, and this annual gulf rye by Pennington.
Our goals for both types of grass seed are to provide erosion control, prevent sub-surface leaching of soil nutrients, weed suppression, and forage for deer.
Since we had a large area to seed in a short time (before fall/winter rains started), we opted for the âthrow & goâ planting technique ⦠not bothering with the normal lawn preparation steps of smoothing the soil and raking the seed in. While the âthrow & goâ seeding technique is much faster and much less labor intensive, it does leave the seed on the soil surface advertizing a âFREE ALL YOU CAN EAT BUFFETâ to hungry birds, so we seeded at a much higher rate than the suggested 15-30 Lbs/Acre.
The annual rye seed germinated faster than the perennial rye seed, it is also growing faster than the perennial rye.
Because of the annual rye grass root systemâs ability to easily penetrate even compacted soil we seeded the annual rye in areas that had seen the most traffic, as a cover crop/green manure in areas planned for growing vegetables next year, and overseeded existing dormant grasses.
Whether planted in loose or compacted soil conditions, there does not appear to be a visible difference in the growth rate for this annual rye seed.
Overall product satisfaction is high. The only negative or down side was the poor quality, lightweight, random and oversized boxes that were used to ship the product from Pennington in Missouri to our location in Washington. Of the nine boxes shipped, seven were either severely damaged or completely destroyed. The grass seed shipped in the damaged boxes had been exposed to the weather (rain) and was delivered wet. Taking steps to assure that their product will be delivered safely and in good condition could be given a higher priority.

I done some extensive work around our property and ended up with about an acre + of dirt. I needed something that would take hold quickly especially in areas that would be prone to erosion such as steep slopes. After placing a heavy layer of seed down I placed straw over it and seeded it once more. I then watered it fairly heavily to weight down the straw this was on a Tuesday and to my surprise on that following Saturday I had grass about an inch tall in areas and within a week and a half all the areas were covered with new grass. It has proved so far to exceed my expectations with its quick germination qualities. Will have to write an update in a few months as to how the root system holds up.

Pennington Ryegrass works great on my lawn.
My back yard is moderately shaded by 9 tall trees (6 deciduous and 3 coniferous).
Until I used this ryegrass, I had a hard time growing grass around the water-saturated soil by my coniferous trees. This grass grows thick and green there, as well as the rest of my back yard which can get pretty dry in other spots.
I seed very heavily, so it took me about three 50lb bags for a 1/4 acre. I did this to choke out the weed-like grass that was previously growing.
If you have lawn conditions like mine, I highly recommend using Pennington's Ryegrass.

We plant rye grass every fall and neighbors always rave over how pretty our house looks in the woods with the very green lawn in the winter. This product is the best we have found, easy to spread, stays put, comes up quickly, and lasts until late spring. We will continue to use this product every year. We highly recommend it to all.
