Philips 405852 dusk to dawn light bulb
Asked by: Anonymous
I don't know why there are so many different answers about the length of this bulb, either people don't know how to use a ruler or they are measuring the wrong bulb or Phillips has changed the length of the bulb. The correct measurement for this bulb from tip to tip (top of bulb to the bottom of the socket is 4". It uses 14 watts and is rated at 900 lumens (printed on the bulb itself). It's an awesome little bulb !

Mine will not twist to adjust. Broke it trying and had to replace it.

How sensitive is the sensor if my house is covered by a lot of big trees? Would it work in this situation?

Asked by: Therese
I'm not sure but buy it, try it and if there is an issue return the light bulb.

Is this light bulb solar powered? Thank you

Asked by: annvann
No. power comes from a traditional lightbulb socket. The bulb has a sensor that detects sunlight and turns the light off in the daytime, and on at night.

The previous version of this bulb had a 180-degree swivel allowing you to position the sensor for best performance. This latest version is a solid piece and that caused some concern when I installed it in our bulkhead-style porch light fixture. The sun had already set so I used an LED camping lantern for some light to work by. I removed the oh-so-short-lived Feit Electric LED bulb and screwed in this one. To my dismay, the sensor landed about ¾ turned toward the back plate of the fixture on the left side. Time would tell if it would work properly. I installed the globe and cage and turned on the power. When the bulb began blinking on and off, I remembered this shortcoming of first-generation devices from the previous century and how kids and teens would use tin foil and other reflectors to concoct a simple strobe light. After four equally timed blinks the bulb stayed lit and it dawned on me: the bulb was programming the sensor to ignore its own light and concentrate on ambient light. Given the relentless cost reductions of economies of scale, I wouldn't be surprised if the sensor is now a simple camera with a fisheye lens that maps out the enclosure and finds the brightest natural light source. True to my conjecture, the bulb dutifully turned off between the first glow in the east and full sunrise at a time that suggests human activity and not a predictable pattern. The only unknown right now is longevity but our first Philips bulb lasted a few years. I bought an extra so I can replace it the moment it has served out its useful life.

I recently moved into a new home that doesn't have much street light access at my front door. By the time I get home in the evenings it's dark and I refused to leave my light on 12+ hours or more a day. Inquiring around I was referred to purchase this specific bulb. I'm so happy I did, it gives me a peace of mind knowing when I arrive home the light is already on and I don't have to hassle with my cell phone being my flashlight. I've had it for a few weeks now and have not had any problems. I highly recommend purchasing this bulb if you're in the need of feeling safe when you come home.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reliable, bright, adds safety and security! We have added adapters in our outside light fixtures, but one was inclosed and upright and we could not find an adapter that would work. We reluctantly tried this light bulb with built in sensor due to price and past failed attempts with other products and are very pleased with it. The light turns on and off as expected. We don't have to worry about turning a light on/off before we leave or coming home in the dark! A little costly, hoping it will last several months, but well worth the peace of mind and added security.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didn't shut off This bulb never shut off during the daytime. I tried untwisting it and putting it in at different start points. I even cleaned off the lamp glass panels thinking it may be blocking the dawn to dusk sensor from working. It never turned off on its own. Finally I returned it and bought another one at Home Depot. The new one has worked perfectly. I guess the original one was defective.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not so great for a double globe light fixture Doesn't work too well in a double globe fixture. The light from one side makes the other side think it's daylight, thus it doesn't come on... Works great in single fixtures however.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Dusk to Dawn Lamp This lamp made dusk to dawn easy. I just screwed it into my exterior fixture and turned the inside switch on. At dusk the lamp comes on and goes off at dawn. So simple. I love it.
