The package may be 7.4 inches tall, the product is not. The Phillips web site (http://www.usa.philips.com/c-p/046677405854/energy-saver-twister/specifications) says the bulb is 4 inches tall by 2 inches wide and this matches my recollection.

It is taller than a regular bulb, but not as much as 7.4 inches. I was worried about the height too, but we are using this inside an outdoor fixture, and it fits fine.

The complete unit is about 7 1/2 inches long, including the screw-in base. The CFL will fit in a fixture that takes a conventional bulb. The Dusk to Dawn is slightly larger, but more compact than using a screw-in photosensor and then adding an incandescent, CFL or LED bulb.

Answer:
Hello needhelp14,
The base of the light rotates to allow you to easily position the sensor. When I say the base I mean the actual silver base of the bulb can rotate independently of the sensor base. I've included a link showing the portion I'm speaking of. I hope this helps.
Cheers,
Chris

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by 60 Watt soft white spiraldusk to dawn CFL light bulb Great light bulb. I have used these for approximately 10 years, and have only had one burn out. I'm sure it was because I had installed in an enclosed outdoor globe. Since installing new fixture with an open bottom, it works better. July 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great lightbulb for lighting your porch I placed this bulb in a recessed fixture to light my front porch. I leave the porch light on at all times, so this bulb is wonderful because it automatically shuts off during daylight hours and comes back on when it gets dark. I initially hesitated because of the price, but if it lasts as long as it should, it is ultimately worth it. July 4, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Work great and met my needs Work just like they're supposed to - on at dusk and off at dawn. Just need to make certain the eye or sensor is facing out. They fit into my existing outdoor light fixtures. Very easy to install. June 28, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best Outdoor Lightbulb Ever Works exactly as advertised. We have had them about a month now and every day they turn off and every night they turn on. It is like having a timer for your outside lights except you don't even have to set the time. The sensor works perfectly, they turn on at an appropriate time. I am very impressed, no more leaving the light on 24/7 or remembering to turn it on and off each day. Coming home late unexpectedly? Light is on. I can't say enough about how these are worth the money. June 7, 2016

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Light Bulb Excellent product. Great for those lights you want to come at dusk for the night and not have to worry about always turning the switch on and off. Not available at Lowes if you happen to go there. As with all bulbs like this, you pay a little more but it should last longer. May 17, 2016
