Philips 405852 dusk to dawn light bulb
Asked by: Anonymous
I don't know why there are so many different answers about the length of this bulb, either people don't know how to use a ruler or they are measuring the wrong bulb or Phillips has changed the length of the bulb. The correct measurement for this bulb from tip to tip (top of bulb to the bottom of the socket is 4". It uses 14 watts and is rated at 900 lumens (printed on the bulb itself). It's an awesome little bulb !

Mine will not twist to adjust. Broke it trying and had to replace it.

How sensitive is the sensor if my house is covered by a lot of big trees? Would it work in this situation?

Asked by: Therese
I'm not sure but buy it, try it and if there is an issue return the light bulb.

Is this light bulb solar powered? Thank you

Asked by: annvann
No. power comes from a traditional lightbulb socket. The bulb has a sensor that detects sunlight and turns the light off in the daytime, and on at night.

The previous version of this bulb had a 180-degree swivel allowing you to position the sensor for best performance. This latest version is a solid piece and that caused some concern when I installed it in our bulkhead-style porch light fixture. The sun had already set so I used an LED camping lantern for some light to work by. I removed the oh-so-short-lived Feit Electric LED bulb and screwed in this one. To my dismay, the sensor landed about ¾ turned toward the back plate of the fixture on the left side. Time would tell if it would work properly. I installed the globe and cage and turned on the power. When the bulb began blinking on and off, I remembered this shortcoming of first-generation devices from the previous century and how kids and teens would use tin foil and other reflectors to concoct a simple strobe light. After four equally timed blinks the bulb stayed lit and it dawned on me: the bulb was programming the sensor to ignore its own light and concentrate on ambient light. Given the relentless cost reductions of economies of scale, I wouldn't be surprised if the sensor is now a simple camera with a fisheye lens that maps out the enclosure and finds the brightest natural light source. True to my conjecture, the bulb dutifully turned off between the first glow in the east and full sunrise at a time that suggests human activity and not a predictable pattern. The only unknown right now is longevity but our first Philips bulb lasted a few years. I bought an extra so I can replace it the moment it has served out its useful life.

I recently moved into a new home that doesn't have much street light access at my front door. By the time I get home in the evenings it's dark and I refused to leave my light on 12+ hours or more a day. Inquiring around I was referred to purchase this specific bulb. I'm so happy I did, it gives me a peace of mind knowing when I arrive home the light is already on and I don't have to hassle with my cell phone being my flashlight. I've had it for a few weeks now and have not had any problems. I highly recommend purchasing this bulb if you're in the need of feeling safe when you come home.

I screwed this bulb into the ceiling light fixture on my porch, added the glass globe and then turned the switch on. I wasn't sure it would work with the glass cover which it did and the amount of light it emits is great. It comes on at dusk and at times goes out for a minute or so and then comes right back on. I am very happy with this bulb since I could never get a fixture to fit because it hit the screen door. With this being a bulb replacement in the light fixture it works fine. I am very pleased with this light bulb and have been using it for about two weeks and would definitely recommend it. It meets all my expectations and I never have to worry about not having a light to see to get to the front porch.

Great option for setting up dusk to dawn security lights without investing in costly hardware. It's like screwing in a bulb to get the dusk to dawn lighting functionality of a more costly setup. I've had this for just about a month and I'm very pleased thus far. My only issue is that the light output is not as those daylight-like led bulbs. Nevertheless this does a great job and automatically lights up my front door as soon as it gets dark. Now that we're into shorter days it's huge. I'll recommend this for sure.

I purchased this lightbulb less than 2 weeks ago, for use on my front porch. It worked well for the first week. This second week, the light flashes on and off for no reason, and this morning stopped working altogether. I am disappointed that this product hasn't lasted even 2 weeks. I have thrown away the original packaging and am not sure if I can return it. I am headed to call the store now.

Works perfectly – even with my frosted globes I had read some reviews of light-sensing dusk-to-dawn light bulbs that posited they would not work in a frosted lamp shade, because the light from the bulb reflects within the fixture and confuses the photocell. Well, either those reviewers were wrong, or Philips fixed the problem, because these bulbs work like champs. I screwed them into my porch fixtures, flipped the switch, and they take care of the rest. I never come home to a dark house, nor do I waste electricity illuminating the noonday sun. The quality of the light is good: warm and pleasant, unlike some of the cold, harsh light from first-generation compact fluorescents. I also got some inexpensive switch guards to prevent me or my guests from accidentally turning the light switch off, and now my lights are good to go –permanently. This Philips bulb is the "set it and forget it" solution I've been looking for.
