Product Overview

The Emsco Group RESCUE 50 Gal. Flat Back Whiskey Rain Barrel features an integrated planter and an easy-to-install, patented downspout diverter kit which fits 2 in. x 3 in. standard or 3 in. x 4 in. high capacity downspouts. The downspout diverter will automatically keep your rain barrel full when rain has fallen and bypass the rain barrel when full preventing overfilling and overflowing which can cause flooding. This rain barrel kit collects rainwater to be both environmentally-friendly and money-saving by helping reduce your dependence on municipal or well water. In addition, your plants will thrive using pure, soft rain water instead of the processed water from your tap which can contain elements harmful to your plants. An added feature about the diverter system is that it does not have to be removed during the winter season. The diverter and rain barrel can be by-passed so that water flows through the downspout as usual, keeping water from getting into the rain barrel and freezing. The integrated planter can be planted directly into or a pre-arranged floral basket can be used to adorn the top of the rain barrel. The planter area includes a weep hole, allowing excess water to drain out preventing plant stress or death due to over-watering and root rot.

  • Environmentally-friendly decorative water urn collects rain from your downspout to reduce your need for municipal or well water, helping you save money
  • Made from UV-stable, engineered resin for durability with the look of a brown whiskey barrel with black accent bands
  • Built-in large planter has weep holes to help prevent over watering and root rot
  • Kit includes our patented dual downspout diverter, a 36 in. connection hose, connection grommets, a barb plug, a 48 in. main outlet hose with on/off ball cock valve, 2 hose gaskets and an illustrated installation guide
  • Diverter system automatically redirects water down the downspout when the urn is full
  • Easy-to-install downspout diverter kit fits 2 in. x 3 in. standard or 3 in. x 4 in. high capacity downspouts
  • Holds up to 50 Gal. of rainwater
  • Can be connected to a soaker hose for convenient automatic watering of nearby plants/gardens
  • Rainwater is ideal for watering plants and gardens, rainwater is at ambient temperatures which plant enjoy and it contains no chlorine or other chemicals

Can These Be Linked/Stacked on TOP of each other?

I was hoping to not use as much ground space & just have a taller setup, as I feel this would improve water pressure & still look nice. Is one barrel strong enough to support another (full) barrel directly on top?
Asked by: emb1225
Nope. The barrels are REALLY heavy when full, and would have problems. You need water to go in, and air to go out. linking them would be really tough if stacked. Plus a deathtrap if one fell on you.

Can these barrels be 'linked' to other like barrels for increased capacity?

Asked by: Questioner
Yes, and it provides instructions in the install guide. However a better solution is to link them using PVC pipe and fittings. The install guide instructions link them for filling, not draining. So if you only follow their instructions you fill the barrels one at a time (first, then second, then third ...) and you need to drain them individually. By linking them at the base with either PVC, or hoses, you can drain them in parallel from a single connection.

How do I get water out of it. It is over half full, level, and even with the hose off, it dribbles very slowly.

It acts like a vacuum has formed. Is there some vent near the top I can't find in the manual?
Asked by: Tom
Enlarge the hole in t6he rear if you have to.

It comes complete with everything you need for the installation and usage. Installation was quite simple and took about 30 minutes. Read the instructions carefully and you will have no problems. Unfortunately it has not rained a lot since it was installed so I cannot comment on the efficiency of the gathering/diverter that installs into a down-spout. However, I did test it with simply spraying the roof with a garden hose and yes indeed it worked. Overall we are very pleased and would highly recommend!!! PS: Please note in the picture that I added a 90 degree brass elbow to the water outlet so we could move the storage of the hose to the side of the unit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Liked first one so much I bought a second one. I got my first barrel and installed it in about 20 minutes. The bulk of the time was spent rounding up the tools! Really easy to install. I did see some complaints in other reviews about the back of the barrel bulging and the diverter not working correctly. I've experienced neither problem. I do think it's critical to ensure you follow the installation directions. It really needs to be on a flat, level stand or driveway etc. Also, the diverter needs to be installed at the correct height, to high or low and it won't work properly. I liked my first one so much I ordered a second one about a week later.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Looks great but multiple leaks and you need 3/4" bit I love the way these look. We bought three and unfortunately 2 of 2 we've set up so far leak. The first one leaks at the bottom where the plastic threads connect to the hose. Not sure if some plumber tape will fix that. The bigger problem is the second one we've set up leaks at the bottom of the barrel AND a hole we can't see about 3/4 of the way up on the front. I'm sure the return will go fine but not looking forward to having to return it and reinstall another one. They're not tons of work to set up but you do need a 3/4" bit to drill the hole for the hose coming off the downspout. Wish that was included. Hoping when we get around to installing the 3rd one it doesn't have all the leaks it's predecessors have had!

It's really nice that the diverters are included, but it's tricky to get them to work well. It took a few tries to get them working well so that water went into the barrel. 2. The hose, diverter, and threads are all plastic. Brass fittings would have made this a 5 star item. I have 3 of these in service.. Two are over a year old, and just installed a third one. One tip I have is that you should really pay attention to how you mount these. The higher up the better. Gravity is a big help. I join mine together with PVC pipe rather than the included hose. I use a pump to send water uphill to an underground buried 50 gallon food grade barrel as a cistern to water plants.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Free water and it looks great! We thought about getting a rain diverter for years and finally came across this whiskey barrel with planter and included diverter system which was exactly what we wanted. The barrel is large and has a flat back, planter area on top with built in drain (to the outside of the barrel). The diverter system is very straightforward, just cut your downspout and insert the diverter and screw it in with the supplied screws.. Drill a hole on the side or rear of the barrel and insert the supplied supply hose. Make sure to install the diverter relatively level to the inlet hole you drill on the barrel. Too much of a down angle will not perform well. The product even comes with a very short outlet hose complete with a mini on/off valve. Since its a standard size hose you can extend it with a long hose as needed but remember that this system is gravity fed so don't expect to use an extremely long hose effectively. Product was a little pricey but well worth it in the end.

It looks nice but you have to either assemble a quality stand ( I used wood and set posts in concrete- sits barrel about 3 feet off the ground) or buy a prefabbed plastic stand that's sits the barrel about a foot off the ground. You need the raised height to use gravity so there's pressure for water

This barrel needs to be hooked up to a drain sprout which I don't have. So I am not using that feature. I am using the barrel to catch roof runoff & its doing just fine Note to Fred..."When all else fails, read the directions"
