Product Overview

The Emsco Group RESCUE 50 Gal. Flat Back Whiskey Rain Barrel features an integrated planter and an easy-to-install, patented downspout diverter kit which fits 2 in. x 3 in. standard or 3 in. x 4 in. high capacity downspouts. The downspout diverter will automatically keep your rain barrel full when rain has fallen and bypass the rain barrel when full preventing overfilling and overflowing which can cause flooding. This rain barrel kit collects rainwater to be both environmentally-friendly and money-saving by helping reduce your dependence on municipal or well water. In addition, your plants will thrive using pure, soft rain water instead of the processed water from your tap which can contain elements harmful to your plants. An added feature about the diverter system is that it does not have to be removed during the winter season. The diverter and rain barrel can be by-passed so that water flows through the downspout as usual, keeping water from getting into the rain barrel and freezing. The integrated planter can be planted directly into or a pre-arranged floral basket can be used to adorn the top of the rain barrel. The planter area includes a weep hole, allowing excess water to drain out preventing plant stress or death due to over-watering and root rot.

  • Environmentally-friendly decorative water urn collects rain from your downspout to reduce your need for municipal or well water, helping you save money
  • Made from UV-stable, engineered resin for durability with the look of a brown whiskey barrel with black accent bands
  • Built-in large planter has weep holes to help prevent over watering and root rot
  • Kit includes our patented dual downspout diverter, a 36 in. connection hose, connection grommets, a barb plug, a 48 in. main outlet hose with on/off ball cock valve, 2 hose gaskets and an illustrated installation guide
  • Diverter system automatically redirects water down the downspout when the urn is full
  • Easy-to-install downspout diverter kit fits 2 in. x 3 in. standard or 3 in. x 4 in. high capacity downspouts
  • Holds up to 50 Gal. of rainwater
  • Can be connected to a soaker hose for convenient automatic watering of nearby plants/gardens
  • Rainwater is ideal for watering plants and gardens, rainwater is at ambient temperatures which plant enjoy and it contains no chlorine or other chemicals

Answer:
It's supposed to hook up to the gutter, however the planter area on top does have a very small hole that leaks into the barrel. You could enlarge this hole and it would collect more rain water (you'll need a screen if you keep soil/plants in the top as well.

Answer:
Since the water flow from the hose is gravity fed, the higher off the ground it is the better flow you'll get. Mine is on the ground, but I have the hose running downhill to the garden.

Answer:
To allow for a consistent flow when using the hose, I would recommend elevating the barrel 8 inches or more from ground level. I've done this and the water flows easily from the hose when required.

Hose Install in Back?

Can the hole for the connecting tube be made in the rear? I want to install this perpendicular to a downspout and am wondering if that is possible. This would also mask the tube and allow the barrel to disguise its flat back better based on the placement of my downspout.

Answer:
You can put the hole anywhere you want on the barrel but keep in mind that the diverter can only be installed onto your downspout one way, which puts the tube to the right or left of the downspout. See pic. This means you'll have to snake the tube around to the front of the down spout

Answer:
You're probably getting settlement from your gutters. I'd recommend that you put some type of screen on the gutter hole feeding the downspout that the barrel is attached to. I believe That Home Depot sells a ball type screen that can fit in the gutter hole.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.2 out of 5 by 119 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Bring On The Rains! This rain barrel was easy to install, and very attractive. It fills well, but drains only when the hose is placed downhill. Prospective customers would be well-advised to purchase the stand that the rain barrel sits up on, which is sold separately. October 4, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by NOT QUITE WHAT I WANTED, BUT FUNCTIONAL This is our second rain barrel, our first was purchased through a fundraiser and has a Rain Reserve diverter system. We paid (a lot) less for this rain barrel. Pros: the flat back, so you can have it much closer to your house, the colored resin will last longer than the painted one we already have, the painted resin looks like wood until you get right next to it, the built-in flower planter, and the attachable hose to water with. Cons:the diverter system, which was much harder to install. The plastic tubing they give you is not at all flexible and kinks easily, it's hard to funnel from the downspout to the rain barrel and I'm not sure that it will collect water as well as the flexible hose that came with my other barrel. We hopefully solved the kinking issue by using a cut garden hose at both the intake and outtake attachments, with their tubing inserted into the hose. This might be a good barrel for first-timers. Not sure how well it will collect rainwater as it has not rained since we installed it. August 2, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great idea that saves money! Quite easy to install in existing downspout. We attached a drip hose to our garden area and this keeps the soil moist. We installed it on a flat driveway and if you are looking for more water pressure you might want to elevate on blocks. This certainly is beneficial for my plants as it captures rain water with no chemicals and it certainly saves on our water bill. July 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Free water and it looks great! We thought about getting a rain diverter for years and finally came across this whiskey barrel with planter and included diverter system which was exactly what we wanted. The barrel is large and has a flat back, planter area on top with built in drain (to the outside of the barrel). The diverter system is very straightforward, just cut your downspout and insert the diverter and screw it in with the supplied screws.. Drill a hole on the side or rear of the barrel and insert the supplied supply hose. Make sure to install the diverter relatively level to the inlet hole you drill on the barrel. Too much of a down angle will not perform well. The product even comes with a very short outlet hose complete with a mini on/off valve. Since its a standard size hose you can extend it with a long hose as needed but remember that this system is gravity fed so don't expect to use an extremely long hose effectively. Product was a little pricey but well worth it in the end. April 28, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by rain barrel this barrel seems to work pretty well. It only rained once since installation, and I went out to observe while it was raining. not all the water coming down the gutter spout went into the diverter tube to the barrel, I would estimate about half of the discharge was diverted (?) with the other half just flowing out the spout as if the diverter were not there. If the duration of the rain storm would have been longer, this would not be a problem. It's not really a "problem" now either, but it would have been nice to capture more (or all) of the water so the barrel would have filled up more from the storm. I estimate it rained hard for 1-0-15 minutes and that got the barrel about 1/3 full. The cool part was that after the storm, for the next few days, we could water some of our plants with this captured water and not use the domestic supply. I wish the barrel filled all the way up, but hopefully longer storms will help with that. The one storm was forceful, but short in duration, which is why I suspect the diverter got overwhelmed and wasn't able to capture %100 of the discharge. We like the look of this and it sits well against the house. We plan to get a second one for the front yard.... October 4, 2016

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Rain water barrel Worked well, but I think I could get a better deal at Lowe's August 16, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by 50 Gallon Whiskey Rain Barrel Barrel needs to be at least 24 inches above ground for water to flow properly. I would have liked to know this before I cut my gutter lead. August 9, 2016
