Product Overview

Rapid Set Mortar Mix is a high quality mortar that is suitable for vertical and overhead applications. It is ideal when rapid strength gain, high durability, and low shrinkage are desired. Use Mortar Mix for general and structural concrete repair, stucco and plaster repair, one-coat exterior plaster, mortar beds, underlayment, and formed work. Mortar Mix sets in 15 minutes and is ready to drive or build on in one hour. Durable in wet environments, it can be applied from 1\2 in. to 6 in. thick. Mortar Mix is a blend of high performance Rapid Set cement with quality sand. Mortar Mix offers superior resistance to chemical attack. It is non-metallic and no chlorides are added. Mortar Mix allows the repair areas to be painted, coated, or sealed quickly after application. Under dry conditions, water-based coatings such as latex paint can be applied after the product is hardened, which usually takes one to four hours. Solvent-based and impermeable coatings such as oil based paint and epoxy can be applied in 16 hours.

can a 50/50 ( exterior latex paint & water ) be used to color mix.

Older masons I understand use to use this process to color mortar mix many years ago. Would this also work with this type of hydraulic cement.
Asked by: BB43
You can color our material using this process. Thank you for choosing Rapid Set!!

Can this be used to fill in 1/2" or deeper gaps between flagstone?

Asked by: MikeinCA
This material can be applied from 1/2- 6" in depth. Thank you for choosing Rapid Set

Can water be added to the mix to make it more manageable for deep cracks in retaining wall.

Crack is 1/2 inch wide and at a 45 degree diagonal. 6 ft. wall 6 inches wide - open on one side - fill dirt on the other. Trying to get as much coverage as possible. Best solution appears if I was to seal the outside crack with plywood and pour the mortar into place in stages.
Asked by: Phil
You can apply our Rapid Set Mortar Mix from 1/2" all the way up to 6" thick in one single application. Our product has an amazing bond strength so you will be able to trowel the Mortar Mix right into the crack and it will reach a 3000 psi in just one hour. Thank you for choosing Rapid Set!!

25 lb. Mortar Mix is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 8.

This is worth Reading, TRUST ME!!!!! The following is basic info you need to know if you are not familiar with how fast Rapid Set Products can set. If you are using this on a warm or hot day, there are a few key points to know BEFORE you get started. 1: If it is Warm or Hot outside, keep the bags of Mortar Mix in the shade or better yet, inside an AC conditioned space. If the dry Mortar Mix is above 75 degrees than you are already asking for a short set time. The cooler you can get the mix (No, do not go to the point of freezing temps) the more time it will take for it to achieve it strength (set). 2: Do not use warm water out of a hose!! Either let it run so it turns cool, or better yet, use Ice Water (with the ice cubes melted 100%). 3: Do not use a wheelbarrow that has been sitting in the sun for hours. Do NOT use a Concrete Mixer! I highly recommend using a 5 gallon Home Depot Bucket and a paddle mixer. If this is your first time using the product, DON'T mix the entire bag, start with 1/4 of it to ensure you get the time you need. 4: If you followed the above, you can also add Rapid Set Set Control packets to the mix which will increase your set time. However, if you don't do the above before adding Set Control, you will not gain as much time as you think. Do you see a theme here? The temperature of EVERYTHING will have a dramatic effect on the set time. One of the reviews stated even with the Set Control product added, it only gave him a couple of minutes. That was probably true, BUT when you don't properly prepare / ensure everything is at "cool-temperature", there is only so much one little packet can do. 5: The addition of the Concrete Pharmacy Flow Control product basically makes the Mortar FLOW. It is really amazing how you can add a a few sprinkles or more of the little pack (which looks like sugar but is not) to your bucket, turn on your paddle mixer, and 30-45 seconds later the mortar is much more fluid. Using Flow Control has another benefit, you will use less water. Excess water weakens the final PSI of cement based products, so using the minimum water needed will insure you achieve the maximum PSI / strength of the product. Rapid Set makes some incredible products and this is no different. As with most things, understanding a few key details makes all the difference in the world. Cheers!

The effect of heat on the curing time of this mortar can not be overstated (so I'll say it again ;) ). I live in the south. Its summer. Its hot and humid even in the morning. The first time I used this mortar was to lay 3 bricks that had broken in a garden stair. Thinking it was like other mortars I have used added water and powder (1:4) and I mixed with a drill. By the time I had placed mortar to where I would seat the bricks it had begun to set in the bucket. I barely had time to finish laying the bricks before the mortar had cured in the bucket (not even 5 minutes). The second time I used this product I kept the (cold) water and mortar separate until I was ready to work. I hand mixed for about a minute but again the mortar began to set up too rapidly (even as I was mixing). There needs to be a "southern formulation" of this mortar. This sets up so fast I don't think I could even use it for fence posts (at least in the summer). It just doesn't stay semi-fluid for long enough. I'll try another product next time I need a rapid set mortar.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent for CERTAIN Situations First, you need to mix this in SMALL batches because it does set up and harden in minutes. I use it exclusively for floor patches in deteriorating red Mexican tile floors. We'd hack out or cut out the bad tile area and remove the subfloor. Then we''d put in a few joist hangers, 2 x4s and scrap plywood to create a new subfloor between the joists, The distance between the desired finished floor height (i.e., the top of the adjoining tiles) to the top of the plywood surface could be as little as 3/4 inches, though we usually went with an inch or so. Then we'd mix red coloring (concrete dye) with the requisite amount of water you will need for the whole batch (I forget how much water it is per box or bag but the data is on the package) and mix up no more than a gallon of mix at a time using a mortar mixer. You can make it buttery. It's a pain in the rear to mix, but it will mix. Then you pour it in or trowel it in as FAST as you can. Get it out of the mixing bucket (use a 5 gallon bucket) asap. If you have a helper the whole thing goes a lot better. So have your helper clean off the residue asap so you can reuse the bucket. Meanwhile use your trowel to smooth out the cement. You can float this stuff to a degree but it's more a matter of using the trowel to smooth it. It starts setting almost immediately. Within a few minutes you can add your final finish. I use the palm of my hands to get a slightly rough finish that is slip resistant. I call it a palm finish (you push down with your palm and sort of move it back and forth a bit... It looks good but wash your hands asap. You can use a coarse brush or other approaches too, but you will have limited time. Keep it a bit damp too - and note that it throws off heat. One guy I trained to do this would finish it smoothly and then use a striking tool (for brick joints) to carefully carve out fake grout joints. The finished product really did look like Mexican tile at a glance. This might all sound unorthodox but the goal was to replace flooring in restaurants that wouldn't be free to work on until the cleaning crew left (midnight) and could be heavily trafficked upon by 6 am. So this left us about 4 hours to do the demo/removal, subfloor patch up, and cement work. It worked very well for this application and I would expect it to work well for any similar thin shell situation.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from VERY fast setting You better be a speed demon mortaring machine. Within 20 minutes of mixing, this mortar becomes unworkable. Not recommended for the casual non-professional, and I can't figure out how it would be useful to a professional. You certainly can't mix and use more than a few pounds of it at a time.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not for thin applications I used it to smooth over a rough walkway. It was excellent except in one important respect. The sand in the product was very poorly sieved, because small stones were in the mix. So the trowel bumped over those stones and left ridges and drag marks. This isn't a problem for thick applications, but it is not suitable for thin applications.
