Product Overview

Get excellent insulation and sound reduction with Reach Air Double Reflective Insulation. It has two layers of sealed air laminated between two layers of durable reflective polyethylene. Reflective Air meets ASTM standards and complies with building code. It installs easily in attic spaces, exterior and interior walls, interior masonry walls, radiant floors, metal and steel buildings, knee walls, crawl spaces, garage ceilings and many other applications where insulation is needed. This insulation roll is 100 ft. long and 48 in. high. Reach Barrier reflective insulation products are one of the most versatile and energy efficient insulation products available. Radiant (reflective) barriers are installed in attics, walls, roof decking, and flooring. Most newly constructed homes contain radiant barrier insulation because of the proven effectiveness to decrease energy usage and cost by reducing summer heat gain and winter heat loss. Installing a radiant barrier may be the lowest-cost improvement that can produce the greatest overall reduction in energy usage and expense.

  • Reflective air2 insulation retains air longer and provides excellent insulation and sound reduction
  • Insulation is easy to install with no mess or fumes and will not cause itchy skin
  • Ideal for attics, exterior and interior walls, radiant floors, metal and steel buildings, crawl spaces, garage ceilings and many other applications
  • Reflective air2 insulation meets ASTM standards and complies with building code
  • Insulation roll is 100 ft. long, 48 in. high and 5/16 in. nominal

We have a weekend cabin with an unheated attic. We have regular fiberglass insulation in the ceiling. and the attic floor is decked. It isn't high enough to use for anything other than storage, but it gets hot and we think maybe this would cut the air conditioning bill? So would we just staple it to the rafters? Would that create enough of an air pocket? Thanks!

Dear PhatKat: Yes, this is an appropriate application for reflective insulation. In addition to stapling the plastic to the rafters, make sure the air pocket in each rafter bay is tightly sealed to prevent air leaks -- e.g. to block hot air flowing out from the edges or top. The 'Windows and Doors' version of Great Stuff foam works well for larger gaps; the cured foam remains flexible to block cracks as things expand and contract. DAP 230 sealant is best for smaller gaps.

If you use your cabin in the winter, please be aware that reflective insulation is ineffective when it gets cold -- because cold cannot be 'reflected' and the warm air inside is not radiant. So if your cabin is also heated, it would be smart to install standard insulation in the attic instead of Reflectix. You could fill the rafter bays with Roxul ComfortBatt -- which provides R4 per inch, winter and summer. Then cover the rafters with Roxul ComfortBoard, to break the 'thermal bridge' created by the exposed wood, which is a surprisingly good conductor of heat and cold.

Foam board is another alternative. You could install sheets of foam board on top of the rafters, e.g. TUFF-R Model # 268441, Home Depot Internet # 100322376 Store SKU # 163832. This product also has a foil faced radiant barrier on both sides, and provides R5 per inch. Carefully seal all of the edges and joints to block air leaks, just like Reflectix. Foam board is flammable, however, and must be covered by a thermal barrier in your attic. The standard is 1/2" drywall. So this would be an additional step not required with Roxul, which is fire-resistant.

One more note: If you insulate the rafter deck, it would be a good idea to apply some insulation on all of gable end walls.

I hope this is helpful.

So... there are a couple of good options for your exterior walls:
(1) Blow in packed cellulose: With open lath on the walls, you could hire an insulation contractor to blow in "dense packed" cellulose that would fill the stud bays. This requires a high compression blower - not the kind that Home Depot rents to blow attic insulation. This is a popular solution for new construction and remodels like yours.
(2) Install foam or rock wool board: Whether you install dense pack cellulose or not, add a layer of foam or rock wool board on top of the lath, before you install the blue board. Foam board provides R5 per inch and provides a good air seal, but is flammable. Rock wool board provides R4.2 per inch, reduces air flow and is not flammable. See: Owens Corning Foamular Model # 52DD, Home Depot Internet # 202085962 Store SKU # 307101 and Roxul ComfortBoard Model # RXCB11224 Home Depot Internet # 206789748 Store SKU # 1001748089
With both, seal all of the edges and joints to block air leaks; the 'Windows and Doors' version of Great Stuff foam works well; the cured foam remains flexible to prevent cracks as things expand and contract.

Second, these products are not effective in winter because cold cannot be 'reflected' and warm air is not radiant. So the R value in winter would be near zero. In the summer, the R value would depend on how well you build and seal the air pocket above the reflective plastic.
Depending on how your patio and ceiling are constructed, the best option would be fill the space above the ceiling with rock wool -- which provides R4.2 per inch. If there is no space between the ceiling and the roof, you could attach rock wool board or foam board to the ceiling, then cover it with drywall.
If there is a gap between the ceiling and roof: Roxul Comfortbatt Model # RXCB351525 Home Depot Internet # 202090820 Store SKU # 974419
If there is no gap: Roxul ComfortBoard Model # RXCB11224 Home Depot Internet # 206789748 Store SKU # 1001748089 and Owens Corning Foamular Model # 52DD Home Depot Internet # 202085962 Store SKU # 307101
I hope this is helpful. Unfortunately, there is not a simple and easy answer!

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Arrived with 3" 'C' shaped gouge torn into it 5' from outer edge. Shipping Wrapping had a hole in it. This is dual insulation compared to the store's single layer version and a perforated under lining. It is light weight for my 2 season sunroom that was sold as a 4-season sunroom. Looks like the insulation layer used in Yerts (chinese round tents). August 9, 2016
