Product Overview

The PowerBack is intended to be installed on a manual transfer panel or generator-ready load center. During a power outage, when the main breaker has been turned off to allow the generator to provide emergency power to the panel, the PowerBack can be activated and will emit a pulsing 105dB alarm when the power outage ends and utility power is again available. The PowerBack installs in a 1/2 trade size knockout in the panel within 20 in. of one of the utility hot legs. It includes an eight-inch current sensing antennae at the end of a 22 in. jacked lead. When wrapped around one of the hot legs to the main circuit breaker, the antennae will detect the returning utility current and activate the sonic alert.

How does the sound turn-off after it senses power?
Asked by: DW
The user must manually turn the alert off. There is a switch on the side.

Suggestion for an suitable enclosure for mounting to an outdoor main panel?

My panel is on the exterior of the house. I'm looking for a box I can mount to the bottom of the panel via one of the knock-outs that will enclose and protect the Powerback device from weather.
Asked by: bgeery
Yes, use a suitable weather enclosure as described for a duplex receptacle (Duplex mentioned only to reference size of box) , but enhance the audibility by drilling multiple holes in the side(s) of the box to allow sound transmission as in a speaker grill cover. To reduce rain entry drill holes on the normally down-wind side, keep the holes to a small diameter, and drill at a 45 degree upward angle into the box to further preclude water entry. Also, don't forget weep holes in bottom enclosure. Wish you well on your project.

Customer Reviews

PowerBack Utility Power Return Alert is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 40.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple to install and does what it says For other reviews which say this is not loud enough I think they must have a high tolerance for loud noise. When I set this thing off the alarm blew my head off so I was suprised that many think that it is not loud enough to hear. Of course if you have a huge house and the panel is very far away I can see that it may be a problem hearing the alarm but you have to be realistic. I found this unit as loud as a smoke alarm. At least to me. Installation was a breeze and so far it seems to work. I won't know until the power actually goes off. But when the power is on this alarm sure does let you know. This product is exactly what I was looking for!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works as advertised! Unit works great. Wrap around hot leg with electrical tape. This gives a tight fit. Sonalert is loud and I can hear it well at all locations. Added benefit is a magnet is on the back of the unit so you can place it on the box if the box is recessed. Good pricepoint as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what I needed, great price and product I recently back fed my load center with a generator hookup and interlock switch (also bought at home depot) and I had no idea how I was going to tell when the power came back. I didn't know these things even existed until I was buying the interlock switch and saw this under the "customers also bought ...." section. This thing works great, install it in a knockout, ground it and wrap the antenna around one of the main feeds and your done. When it's enabled it beeps when power's present. I've seen others say it isn't loud enough, but mine is extremely loud. Ear piercing in fact. The price was better then amazon and the product itself seems well built. What more could you want.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Value ! Easy to install and works great. I did not have room to mount on top of the power panel as suggested due to all the wires, so I mounted mine on a 3/4" PVC LB that I mounted on the side of my power panel at a knockout within easy reach. When activated by a power return it is VERY LOUD and can be heard throughout the house. So loud it almost hurts while getting to it to turn it off. I used to watch for neighbor's lights to come back on, now I know immediately when I can switch back from the generator.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great add on to generator set up ordered through and had delivered to store .was easy to install i removed the panel and wrapped the antenna around the hot (main wire ) . but be very care full even if the main breaker is switched off the wire you will be wrapping the antenna to is always hot DO NOT attempt it if you are not confident you can do this. BUT overall it was not that hard to install i did use zip ties to secure the antenna to the hot wire . also 9 volt battery is needed and not included. then switch to on and loud alarm goes off .. as far as sound volume it is loud sounds like a loud smoke detector . over all very easy to install and well worth it for letting you know when power has been restored INSTEAD of burning unnecessary fuel from the generator.could actually pay for itself by saving fuel money

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to install I recently purchased a portable generator which I backfed into my main breaker box. Thus I needed a method to let me know when utility power returned. This box appears to fulfill that need. I tested the box after installation by turning off the main CB in the panel and checked to see if the alarm would sound; it did. Installation is easy, but of course you need to be very careful of the 220VAC present in the panel. The 9V battery compartment is quite tight fitting, but I suspect I will not need to change the battery very often. While standing next to the alarm, it seemed very loud to me (almost ear-splitting). Note: The picture is not upside down; the box is installed on the bottom of my breaker panel since thats where the main line comes into the box.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does just what I needed I was looking for something like this for years, and now I've found it. Installation was a snap, though you do have to wrap the "antenna" wire quite tightly around the main feed wire. I added a couple of tie wraps and then wrapped the whole assembly in electrical tape to keep it closely coupled. If you have the antenna too loose, it will not alarm when the power comes back on. But other than the care needed in installation, I can't imagine a much better way to tell that the power has returned after an outage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You need this if you have a manual transfer generator. I wondered how I would know when power was restored when I installed my generator interlock. This is a great solution for that problem. As others have said, wrap the sense-wire tightly around one leg of the incoming power and secure it with electrical tape. I used ty-wraps at both ends of the coil of wire on top of the tape to keep everything from unraveling. Mine is installed through a knock-out on the side of the box, and the alert signal is very loud! (I can hear mine installed in the basement from upstairs with no problem.) Overall, this is a great solution at a reasonable price. If you have a manual generator transfer, you need one of these.
