I have 3 metal structural columns in my basement with some rust on them but not completely rusty, should I use Rusty Metal Primer before painting??

These columns are 20 years old and never have been painted. It does look like they may have had some red colored primer on them from the factory, but they are dirty and they do have spots of rust on them but not really heavy rust. Obviously, they are indoors and hold up the steel I-beam that supports the house.

Answer:
Greetings Frank,
I have the same type set up in my garage. I had tried painting without using the primer. Since I used a latex paint, the rust returned in a couple months. I then used a wire brush, used this primer (which I absolutely swear by) and then painted. So far so good and it's been almost a year.

Answer:
Ernie, we recommend always top coating a primer. Primers are not formulated to withstand the elements, including dirt and dust. A primer is very porous in order to aid in the adhesion of a topcoat. When a primer is not painted over, those elements enter and sit in the pores and the primer tends to deteriorate or chalk.

Answer:
Hello Ernie!
Thank you for your question!
Primer is meant to be a sealing coat, rather than a top coat. So you will have to apply a paint on top of this primer to complete the paint process. Primer will seal the surface, but you need something to protect the primer and paint will do just that.
Good luck with your project,
Christine

Answer:
Yes, Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Rusty Metal Primer can be used on copper oxide corrosion. It is important that the corrosion is sound and not flaking. Before applying the product remove loose rust, or corrosion, with a wire brush.

However, you do not state the reason for wanting to prime copper. You may want to state the reason for wanting to prime it, and I'm sure someone will head you in the right direction for whatever the purpose may be. Read Less

Rated 4.8 out of 5 by 5 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good value You can see the rust stains on the concrete from before. This primer is brown in color. All that's left to do is a top coat on the primer and re-stain the concrete. You must do clean up with mineral spirits or paint thinner. May 26, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good stuff! I have used this product for decades and have never had a problem with adhesion or rust breaking through or durability. I've used it with and without a top coat with no issues either way. If you don't cover it with a top coat the only thing you'll notice is that after many years the color will lighten up quite a bit. But that's it! June 24, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works Great I've used this primer on rusty metals for a number of years, and it works extremely well. I had an old bush hog that was very rusty, so I cleaned off the loose rust, used the rusty metal primer, and then covered it with John Deere green. Two years later, it still looks like new. I have never found any paint that works on rusty metal that even comes close to rustoleum. October 4, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by bought paint to cover rusty automotive interior. Painted with ease, metal looks a lot better. Prepped rusty metal then coated with this primer October 15, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Works well - Fast Being a beginner, It got a little messy when i didn't realize it has to be cleaned with mineral spirits and not water. Works great, easier than paint to apply. June 5, 2013
