You can use the longer lasting battery if you like. The mounting face is the same for both the regular battery and the One + batteries. The only difference is the size of the body. The extended life battery is about twice as thick as the regular battery. And they recharge very quickly, something like in 30 minutes or so.

Yes, and no... Yes, it will work fine for trimming palm fronds off a tree, although you need to be able to manage the weight of the motor at the end of the pole. There is a strap that kind of helps you manage that weight (I don't remember what it is). The problem with the weight is most evident if you are reaching out (vs just up).
The "No" part of the answer is if you are wanting to cut through a palm

The "No" part of the answer is if you are wanting to cut through a palm trunk, as in taking the whole palm tree down. While you could probably muscle your way through it, it is not the right tool for cutting a tree down.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works very well, very nice unit-my first chain saw Only down side is if you have a lot of trimming to do, buy extra batteries. Trimming at a friends house, he has 25 pine trees that are coming down. So I was trimming non stop 2 inch to 6 inch branches. The battery would only last ten minutes--but I could cut 20-25 branches down. At a $100.00ea I would hop in the pool until the battery recharged, then hit it again. Saw worked flawlessly--very impressed!! Thanks Ryobi for making quality products. Troy August 31, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by cordless pole saw ryobi the best tool ever. granted my husband did all the work. but so easy. he trimmed for 40 minutes and still had plenty of battery time. this tool is not meant to be used as a lopper. its likes 3 to 6 inch branches. so worth the money spent. September 8, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Poor Design Bought this saw to trim several limbs about an inch in diameter. Added oil & tensioned the chain a bit and tried to cut through the first limb. Chain stopped rotating after 5 minutes of use. Changed battery, reinstalled chain & said a short prayer and the spindle would not rotate. Heard the motor running though. Don't waste your time with this saw. Surprised at its performance as I own several Ryobi power tools & they all perform well. I'm going to buy a non powered saw and flex the muscles a bit. August 19, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by oil streamed out while engine was running I assembled the saw as directed and wanted to run it for a while to be sure it worked before I used it to cut branches. I poured in the oil, secured the cap, and ran the saw. The blade ran smoothly, some oil was thrown off the end of the blade, as would be expected, but then oil streamed down the housing and onto the ground. I had filled the oil compartment half way, and it was gone in less than 2 minutes. I returned it to Home Depot with no problem. September 3, 2016
