Customer Questions & Answers

Is the edge guard remaovable when not needed?

Asked by: Anonymous
There is a lever on the left side. You just turn it off and spread normal.

Does this come with a cover for the hopper? Someone on another site had mentioned a cover.

can you use for rock salt allso

Asked by: Anonymous
No. I bought this same model from lowes. The release opening is large enough to let rock salt fall through easilly. But the center thing near the opening (meant to knock everything around) got jammed up at the slightest amount of resistance, which is part of the same assembly that spins the thing underneath that throws the contents outside. Perhaps this thing would work ok as something to use for your lawn, but based on how easilly everything just stopped working, I doubt it would matter what it's filled with. I tested with about 3 lbs of rock salt, Tldr; it just wouldn't work correctly without jamming the spinning components

Is there an advantage using the drop spreader vs the edge guard spreader? Are both able to spread grass seeds?

Asked by: Anonymous
I made sure I read the instructions on the Scott's bag. It said to apply over a dew covered or wet lawn. The drop spreader works by opening slots at the bottom of the hopper. If your grass is not short enough and you are applying to a dew covered or wet lawn, the moisture can come in contact with the fertilizer coming out of the slots and plug them. So I am going to get a broadcast spreader.

Pro EdgeGuard Broadcast Spreader is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 142.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Scott's Pro Spreader Minor assembly was a snap. This spreader feels like what professional lawn companies use. I've only used it once to spread Winterizer and it worked well. My only issue is I need to get used to how far it spreads, which is almost double the width of my old spreader. I used about 50% more fertilizer than normal. Next time I'll know to make wider pathways.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Did not work on FIRST use! Filled the hopper with seeds. Worked for the first minute and then the spinning wheel on the bottom just stopped spinning. If there is any sort of resistance on the spinning blade in the hopper the wheels turn but the shaft that engages the spinning wheel does not. Returning it to see if I got a defective one.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Check the tires before you buy it i bought it and the first time I used the wheels fall off and I couldn't fix and I do construccion for living so I know how to fix stuff. wheel attach very poor I was expecting to have this unit for a long time been the most expensive in the store.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor quality and poor design Too much plastic. Have had problems with this unit from day 1. The drive mechanism for the dispenser 'prop' is all just a press-fit design. It works loose and the prop no longer spins. I'm constantly having to hammer the axle plugs back into the center of the tires - sometimes that fixes it and sometimes it doesn't. This past weekend I finally put band clamps around the wheels where they attach to the axles to get it to work reliably. My yard has some tree roots in it from a maple tree and apparently, unless your yard is completely smooth and flat, this unit basically falls apart. I love the spreader concept - if only the quality were there. I basically wasted my money on this unit.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This product is cheaply made and not worth the price I normally do not write reviews but I am so extremely disappointed with this spreader. I have used Scott's products before and have been satisfied, but this spreader has been a disaster. I also should note that this is the third spreader of this kind I have used/returned in the last year, with each time something new breaking within the first or second use. On the first spreader it was the gear box locking up and the plastic snapping, the second time the cable would not work right when the lever was depressed and now recently I went to use it and the tire went flat. Upon inspection, I discovered a gaping hole in the inner-tube after one use. I'm done with this spreader and Scott's products. Cheaply made plastic parts and overpriced..three strikes and I'm out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Scotts got it RIGHT! Initial, out of the box quality was horrible. It literally fell apart. But after putting it back together, it works perfectly. Scotts has evidently listened to its customers and fixed all the spreader issues they have had in the past. This spreader throws out fertilizer evenly left and right. It spreads the correct amount when the number is set to the recommended setting, and the edge guard works great. Woohoo!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Very poor quality Product fell apart right out of the box. Spread pattern is heavy on right side, light on the left. Leaves large stripes in yard as a result. First time I put more than half full with grass seed...the drive gears stripped. Had to put screw into drive shaft to keep drive wheel turning. Complete waste of money. Useless for any yard application. Plastic does not rust but it also does not hold up.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Scotts broadcast spreader (black plastic model) It was unable to do the job I needed. The weight of the product used inside to be spread was too much for the spreader and caused it to not rotate and throw anything. It also was unable to drop the product through the gate and the gate and cord for the gate broke first use. I was not able to use it at all; very unhappy. The gear that rotates the spreader from the wheel needs the be stronger.
