Yes, it comes with a clear plastic cover. It stretches over the top. Ideal for when it's windy or rainy. Transparent so you can see what's going on in the hopper.

Answer:
If you are just broadcasting without any worry of throwing the product on your neighbors yard or into flower gardens then you just dont set the edge guard to block the product.

The edge guard engages with the pull of the lever on the handle, and retracts when not needed. No need to try and remove.

Answer:
The edge guard feature is not physically removable, but it does have an on / off switch that will turn the feature off so the spreader will operate like it is not there.

Answer:
I made sure I read the instructions on the Scott's bag. It said to apply over a dew covered or wet lawn.
The drop spreader works by opening slots at the bottom of the hopper. If your grass is not short enough and you are applying to a dew covered or wet lawn, the moisture can come in contact with the fertilizer coming out of the slots and plug them. So I am going to get a broadcast spreader.

Hi, never use a drop spreader, I always use the edge guard, less chance for application errors, and gives me more consistent results.

Drop spreaders literally drop your stuff on the ground. Good if you are spreading poison or very fine powders - it won't go all over the place. The con is you might get "zebra stripes" on your lawn if you aren't precise and it's slower because you need to do more walking.
Broadcast spreaders throw the material to the left and right a foot or two in all directions so you can do less walking to get good Read More

Answer:
They are both able to spread most anything, from grass seed, to larger size pellets.
The difference is obviously that the drop spreader covers a smaller area, but it gives you more control over the application.
I found that the "Edge Guard" works well compared to a drop spreader, and since this spreader covers a wider area, it was a better choice for my needs.

Answer:
The drop spreader is more accurate but less forgiving then the Turf Builder Edgeguard DLX spreader. The main advantage of a broadcast spreader vs a drop spreader is that the broadcast spreader can cover a larger area quicker than the drop spreader.

No, Phil, we do not recommend using this spreader for salt. Salt and ice melt products tend to be much heavier. They are also corrosive.

Rated 3.6 out of 5 by 130 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Scotts got it RIGHT! Initial, out of the box quality was horrible. It literally fell apart. But after putting it back together, it works perfectly. Scotts has evidently listened to its customers and fixed all the spreader issues they have had in the past. This spreader throws out fertilizer evenly left and right. It spreads the correct amount when the number is set to the recommended setting, and the edge guard works great. Woohoo! September 6, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Made it 10 feet and wheels fell off. Such a poor design. Poor design compared to older models. Nobody builds things like they used to. Made it 10 feet and wheels fell off. Took it back to the store for refund. They threw it in the trash. Such a poor design. Wish I hadn't given my son in law my speedy green 3000 September 29, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by bugsy this spreader work great on all lawns.easy to handle and easy to use, easy to clean great product.thanks October 18, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very pleased Only used once so far but very easy to push and operate. My last spreader has plastic tires and was a chore on uneven ground. This spreader push over bumps and uneven areas easily. October 18, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Scott's Pro Spreader Minor assembly was a snap. This spreader feels like what professional lawn companies use. I've only used it once to spread Winterizer and it worked well. My only issue is I need to get used to how far it spreads, which is almost double the width of my old spreader. I used about 50% more fertilizer than normal. Next time I'll know to make wider pathways. October 11, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Very disappointed in the poor quality I purchased this spreader with balloon tires and the edge guard features thinking that it was an upgrade to my previous Scotts Spreader that I gave to my neighbor. Every time I go to use it the tires are flat, today the spinner came off, when I put it back on the drive wheel seems to bind up and does not want to turn easily. There also is a grinding noise in the gear box, like fertilizer is inside. Not what I expected at all, very disappointed. Now I need to borrow my old spreader from my neighbor. July 22, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Junk I've had several of Scott's spreaders of various sizes and they all lasted less than a year. October 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very Nice Broadcast Spreader Wow! I had a small plastic wheeled spreader for years that finally fell apart. This spreader works absolutely awesome. No more worries about the spreader tipping over on the hill or having to repair the spreader annually like I did with the plastic wheeled spreader. May 5, 2016
