Is the edge guard remaovable when not needed?

Asked by: Lawnman#1
There is a lever on the left side. You just turn it off and spread normal.

Does this come with a cover for the hopper? Someone on another site had mentioned a cover.

can you use for rock salt allso

Asked by: phil
No. I bought this same model from lowes. The release opening is large enough to let rock salt fall through easilly. But the center thing near the opening (meant to knock everything around) got jammed up at the slightest amount of resistance, which is part of the same assembly that spins the thing underneath that throws the contents outside. Perhaps this thing would work ok as something to use for your lawn, but based on how easilly everything just stopped working, I doubt it would matter what it's filled with. I tested with about 3 lbs of rock salt, Tldr; it just wouldn't work correctly without jamming the spinning components

Is there an advantage using the drop spreader vs the edge guard spreader? Are both able to spread grass seeds?

Asked by: Butch
I made sure I read the instructions on the Scott's bag. It said to apply over a dew covered or wet lawn. The drop spreader works by opening slots at the bottom of the hopper. If your grass is not short enough and you are applying to a dew covered or wet lawn, the moisture can come in contact with the fertilizer coming out of the slots and plug them. So I am going to get a broadcast spreader.

I have a large yard, around 10,000 square feet so I bought the "pro" model of this spreader with the pneumatic tires for ease of pushing. PRO's: easy to push, easy to fill, the hopper cover is nice too. Hold an entire 50 lb bag of fertilizer. CONS's: it's still a lot of plastic in the drive and spreader mechanism. Mine just broke after 2.5 seasons of use, the plastic "axle" for the rotary part of the spreader simply wore out from friction. If you want something to last, obviously you are going to pay somewhere in this price range. I'd recommend you look for a spreader that has more metal in all moving parts (this one does not).

Everything checked thoroughly by landscape contractor, but wheels locked as rotor plate and guard collapsed upwards and ultimately fell off after constant proper reattachment. Very poor quality and unreliable spreader with a laughable eighty-dollar consumer price tag. Have now purchased a more expensive, but known top commercial broadcast spreader that will last for decades on our acre of lawn. You get what you pay for. Period.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Thought I bought a professional spreader. What I like... 1) Inflatable tires (although they are small). 2) Edge Guard. What I don't like... 1) Snap fit wheel/axle connection that drives the impeller. On first use, tire would spin but impeller would not. Had to troubleshoot to figure out why impeller wasn't spinning. I disassembled and added duct tape to axel in order to get the impeller to spin. 2) If the fertilizer is not of uniform size or has clumps, the flow control door can and does jam in the open position and will not close. 3) Speader pattern throws more product to the left side, than the right side. I'm curious whether Scotts actually field tests their spreaders, in real world use?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Cheaply made, doesn't spread evenly With the edge guard turned off, this spreader sent about 70% of the seeds to the left side and about 30% to the right. I tried adjusting the edge guard, but this only locked up the entire edge guard system completely. I returned it to the store only to be told that such an uneven distribution is typical of these spreaders. Okay, whatever. Don't waste your time and money. I get better dispersion (in a shorter amount of time) with a hand-held spreader. I will not be purchasing anymore Scott's products, as they simply don't live up to my expectations.

Product was DOA. without material in the bin the spreader would only spin intermittently and appeared even then only seemed to be driven from one wheel. with even a quarter load of media in the hopper it would not spin at all. even though this is the expensive pro model it does appears to be plastic junk. Absolutely nothing professional quality or duty about it. I had an older model 3000 that this was replacing and its while also not a professional duty unit, its much more robust that this new unit.

Worked well for about 24 bags of lime, 2 bags of weed and feed and 2 bags of winterizer. Just started to addd more lime and the spreader portion attached to the wheels fell out. Upon further examination it appears that the edge guard cut through the portion of plastic that goes up through the tub to spin the agitator. Nice product, cheap materials. The edge guard is what propelled me to buy, but was all but nonexistent.

I wheeled it out of the garage and the left wheel fell off. It was easy to put back on and push into place. Unfortunately, the wheel fell off again within a few seconds of pushing the spreader just a few feet. Every time I put the wheel back on a moved a few more feet, the wheel would fall off. Considering that other reviews also state that the wheel falls off, it seems like the wheel is designed to fall off for some reason. In addition to the wheel issue, the spreader also stopped distributing the Scott's four step lawn care products (step 2). The product was clumped together and it wouldn't move through the spreader. I'm not sure if the product, the spreader, or both were the problem. Something needs to be done about this model spreader, because the design is just terrible.
