Is the edge guard remaovable when not needed?

There is a lever on the left side. You just turn it off and spread normal.

can you use for rock salt allso

Asked by: Anonymous
No. I bought this same model from lowes. The release opening is large enough to let rock salt fall through easilly. But the center thing near the opening (meant to knock everything around) got jammed up at the slightest amount of resistance, which is part of the same assembly that spins the thing underneath that throws the contents outside. Perhaps this thing would work ok as something to use for your lawn, but based on how easilly everything just stopped working, I doubt it would matter what it's filled with. I tested with about 3 lbs of rock salt, Tldr; it just wouldn't work correctly without jamming the spinning components

Is there an advantage using the drop spreader vs the edge guard spreader? Are both able to spread grass seeds?

Asked by: Anonymous
I made sure I read the instructions on the Scott's bag. It said to apply over a dew covered or wet lawn. The drop spreader works by opening slots at the bottom of the hopper. If your grass is not short enough and you are applying to a dew covered or wet lawn, the moisture can come in contact with the fertilizer coming out of the slots and plug them. So I am going to get a broadcast spreader.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wanted the cover, but after a year it torned I use it for everything . Grass care, Mainly applying salt during the winter. Since it was a pro I was hoping it would last , Looks like I might have to replace it next year. Only get 3 years out of it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Scotts broadcast spreader (black plastic model) It was unable to do the job I needed. The weight of the product used inside to be spread was too much for the spreader and caused it to not rotate and throw anything. It also was unable to drop the product through the gate and the gate and cord for the gate broke first use. I was not able to use it at all; very unhappy. The gear that rotates the spreader from the wheel needs the be stronger.

The Edgeguard portion never locked in place and now does not work anymore. The only way I think this may offer value is if you only plan to buy Scotts fertilizer, but that still doesn't mean it will last for long. Would love to return for my money back!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Thought I bought a professional spreader. What I like... 1) Inflatable tires (although they are small). 2) Edge Guard. What I don't like... 1) Snap fit wheel/axle connection that drives the impeller. On first use, tire would spin but impeller would not. Had to troubleshoot to figure out why impeller wasn't spinning. I disassembled and added duct tape to axel in order to get the impeller to spin. 2) If the fertilizer is not of uniform size or has clumps, the flow control door can and does jam in the open position and will not close. 3) Speader pattern throws more product to the left side, than the right side. I'm curious whether Scotts actually field tests their spreaders, in real world use?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Cheaply made, doesn't spread evenly With the edge guard turned off, this spreader sent about 70% of the seeds to the left side and about 30% to the right. I tried adjusting the edge guard, but this only locked up the entire edge guard system completely. I returned it to the store only to be told that such an uneven distribution is typical of these spreaders. Okay, whatever. Don't waste your time and money. I get better dispersion (in a shorter amount of time) with a hand-held spreader. I will not be purchasing anymore Scott's products, as they simply don't live up to my expectations.
