Customer Questions & Answers

Bolt size and installation

what would the bolt size be required for a 8x12 shed? should the bold be added to wet concrete, or drilled into cured concrete?
Asked by: lma
The ABA44Z requires a 1/2" diameter bolt. It can be installed in either new or existing concrete, but it would be up to the Designer to specify the anchor bolt type, length and embedment. Thank you!

Hi. Is this a hot dipped galvanized for corrosion protection?

Asked by: lma
The ABA44Z has the Z-MAX finish which is a hot-dip galvanized coating and provides a medium level of corrosion protection. Please see the Corrosion section of our website to determine the recommended finish for your specific application based on environment, type of wood being used, chemical retention, etc. Thank you!

Can this post base be used for a driveway carport?

Im planning on installing 6 of these strong ties with 4x4s and 4" redhead anchors in concrete. Would this be sufficient for a driveway carport?
Asked by: Gus
They should be more than adequate to support the vertical load of the base. Just be sure the upper part of the structure is adequately braced against wind and any other horizontal loading that would try to tip the posts.

Does this adjustable post base come with an anchor bolt?

Does this adjustable post base come with an anchor bolt? If not, what size is recommend.
Asked by: BigBear
The anchor bolts are sold separately. The ABA44Z requires a 1/2" diameter anchor. It would be up to the Designer/Engineer of Record to specify the anchor bolt type, length and embedment. Thank you!

Can I use this ABA44Z base for stair stringers?

I am matching another set of existing deck stairs that have two 4x12 stringers. I intend to lock the bottom of the new stringers (about 11"x 3.5" area) to the concrete landing using a pair of these ABA44Z bases under each stringer. Typically I would screw the stringers down to an anchored, flat 2x12, but I want prefer to keep the lumber raised off the exterior, exposed concrete. I also need to keep the height of nailing on the stringers to less than 3.5". The load bearing on each stair stringer should not exceed 500 pounds. Thanks.
Asked by: random
If I understand your situation, you could use these as your stringer anchors. As long as you have both sides screwed through these anchors I believe you would be good. I don't know if these are rated for the weight load.

Can these be used to support posts for stair landing?

Asked by: AverageJoe
They can certainly be used to support the post and isolate it from the concrete footing or slab, as long as any necessary lateral or diagonal bracing of the posts is properly installed.

how do I adjust post base to account for uneven concrete?

going to use these as post anchors on concrete for a pergola. Ground is not level - 2 inch difference in height of concrete from left and right posts. Can the base be adjusted to account for this difference, or will I need to cut my posts?
Asked by: tobi
For a minor adjustment of perhaps 1/4" or 1/2", you could probably shim under the post base with some type of flat galvanized metal shim that completely covers the area beneath the post base, but for a difference of 2" you will need to cut the posts.

mounting to cement porch

is it better to drill holes, and mount with screws ( Tapcons etc.), to avoid cracking of surface area ?? This is a porch front porch that we're working on, with a brick perimeter that we're mounting to..
Asked by: Anonymous
Hi JJ, Simpson reccomends using a 1/2 inch diameter center anchor bolt for this hardware. These can be a wedge type or an adhesive anchor set with epoxy. Mike,

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Choice The ability to adjust the bracket is a great option . Quality of product is excellent. I needed a bracket that would keep the 4X4 off the ground and away from standing water. This bracket fit the bill perfect. Would recommend product to anyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best way to stop rot In replacing rotted deck supports, one sees how much damage water rot does over time. Elevating supports with a base like this looks good and give confidence that the posts will remain solid!
