I have purchased 20+ Insteon switches in the last 3-4 years for a *new* house with a whole house surge protector installed. I have had 4-5 switches die in that time (no other electrical issues). Most died just out of warranty. They also discontinued their Icon line so if more go bad I would now be forced to purchase more expensive replacements.
When multiple, expensive switches die faster than the incandescent light bulbs that they control, you have to think very hard if it's worth putting these in your home. I certainly will not be installing any more.

The INSTEON dimmer is compatible with X10, providing a great upgrade path for homes with this older technology. I installed several of these dimmers (along with other INSTEON-enabled switches and keypads) in a home theater room. They work great! I especially like each dimmer's ability to control the brightness level and ramp rate.
These switches also provide a low-cost method for scene lighting, as each dimmer can become a member of several other, remote-controlled scenes. I use scenes for all on/off, TV viewing, movie viewing, etc.
Take care, though: Each switch location must have a neutral wire. Usually, this is tucked in the back of the switch box, unused; however, I have an older home and have found one switch location where no neutral is available. These switches require a neutral to work properly, and it is better to take two minutes to check before you place your order!

Here's what you need to know:
-You can set the speed at which the light fades On and Off. You can have it turn on instantly or gradually fade over a few seconds (this by the way can extend your bulb life)
-You can set a brightness limit that the switch always remembers. Single tap On goes to your defined level, another tap goes to full On. Or just double-tap it to instantly turn it on to full-bright (bypassing limit and fade rate).
The best part:
-Remote control. As you can see from the features above, this dimmer is great on it's own but the fact that you can remotely control it is the amazing part. The controller i chose was a SmartLinc which is a web-based controller so I can control the light from my iPhone (or any web-based device).
As noted by another other reviewer you do need neutral wires in your switch box. To check, pull off the trim plate of the switch you want to replace. unscrew the switch so that you can pull it out (no need to disconnect wires) and look for two or more white wires that are wire-nutted together in the back of the box. Or if you feel confident enough and your home was built no more than 25 years ago, you probably already have neutrals available so just buy it.
Great product, solid design, and well worth the price for all that it does.

I have been installing Insteon products for years now. This is a great little switch, with lots of options. It is a little more difficult to install than a standard switch, but once you've installed one, the rest are a snap! Remember this is an electronic device, so it requires BOTH hot and neutral wires to work. Follow the instructions carefully with it and you will be set.

These devices have a high failure rate. I have $3753.39 invested in them for automating my home's lighting. They will stop responding to paddle presses. If you want a high end dimmer only, there are better devices that cost much less and are more reliable. If you want to automate your lighting, there are other systems that are more reliable.
