Customer Questions & Answers

how do I test a solenoid to determine if it is good?

Asked by: tacobaby
The alarm on my water meter box says "Station 4 Wire Shorted". I checked all of the station 4 wiring from the water meter box to the valve and from the valve to ground. Wiring was good. I checked the resistance of the valve itself with an ohm meter. The station 4 valve measured 4 ohms. I checked the remaining valves that are working properly. The good valves all measured about 42 ohms +/-1 ohm.

Is it a universal part or it only fits Rain Bird product?

Asked by: Ray168
Yes, to my knowledge, my system is more than 12 years old and they worked. I recommend replacing the diaphragm at the same time, the kit is also sold here.

does the water need to be shut off to change the solinoid

does the water need to be shut off to change the solinoid
Asked by: ron
Not necessarily the main water valve, look for another turn handle that just turns off the irrigation system, it should be near the main water shut off at the house, not the main shut off on the street meter.

how long should one last

I converted a manual sprinkler system in my yard to an automatic system about 1 year ago using a rainbrid controller and valves. Can the solenoid go bad that quickly? 4/5 of my zones are still working appropriately
Asked by: yarddoc
It's an electro- mechanical device, so it has a finite life span. But under normal use (actuated once or twice a day) it should last several years. If it dies after only a few weeks or months, then it was probably defective when you purchased it.

Was quick and easy to replace, wires were long enough to rerun without any problems, however it is suggested that water proof wiring caps be used to make the connections. Please insure that you remove and reuse the turning handle caps for the new solenoids it makes it so much easier to turn the systems on and off. Very reasonably priced and fully compatible with most Rain Bird irrigation systems.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Replacement solenoid This solenoid was a perfect fit to replace the one in the valve body I had. No need to remove the valve from the system, just disconnected the wires on the old solenoid unthread it out of valve body and reverse the process with the new one.
